The socialist mindset of politicians led to crippling the pace of our economic engine. Just imagine, if we had a capitalist attitude towards our economy from the days of independence what would be the growth rate of today's India. Thank God the current government doesn't hesitate to make the course correction.
But the current gov has a protectionist mindset. Import tariffs have been hiked to very high levels on many items.
I would partially disagree to it. It is true that neo liberalism (current capitalism) started from 1991 onwards which should have been started atleast by 80's. My take is that in 1947 there was 10% literacy rate, no major industry except coal, steel or railways, British Raj was itself a by product of mercantilism (a form of capitalism), crippling health and no laws to protect domestic economy from capitalist misuse. At that premature stage it would have been better to start from mixed model and strengthen the base to make a transition to a private model.
@@amrittayal3610 Implementing socialism to prevent the side effects of capitalism is like, setting the house on fire to kill the rats.
@@Stallion_1044 I agree to it. But we have to understand the prevailing conditions when those policies were implemented. I guess any ideology/policy which puts too much power on one single hand, or on the hands of a select few, it's bound to fail. It isn't a question of if, but when. Like every other creature, human beings are also hard-wired by Mother Nature to work towards self-preservation, and at all levels, including personal level. What happens is, we might get 2 or 3 or 4 successive good and honest leaders but the moment a corrupt leader prioritising self-preservation assumes power in a socialist/communist set-up, things start going downhill rapidly. There's no dearth of such examples.
Capitalism has it's dark side too, but I guess capitalism allows for more checks and balances as compared to socialism or communism and hence it looks better compared to the others, but I guess we are also starting to witness the ill-effects of hard-core capitalism.
Speaking of Nehru and most other debaters of socialism/communism vs capitalism, I wonder why we ignore our own past. We are a continuous surviving civilisation for over 5000 years and still counting.
