    She's using a technique called "Keening". It's a traditional Irish singing style which she absolutely has mastered.

    • @duhusker4383
      @duhusker4383 Před 2 lety +16

      Keening has nothing to do with singing or music. It's a traditional formal vocal lament and wailing for the dead.

    • @duncansonoryan
      @duncansonoryan Před rokem +27

      Keening (Irish: Caointeoireacht) is a traditional form of vocal lament for the dead in the Gaelic Celtic tradition, known to have taken place in Ireland and Scotland. Keening, which can be seen as a form of sean-nós singing, was performed in the Irish and Scottish Gaelic languages (the Scottish equivalent of keening is known as a coronach).

It's so, so, so, beautiful, and it encapsulates every ounce of emotion Dolores can put into her magnificent Irish voice. Thanks for doing this! P.S. Another two of my favorite female vocalists of the early 90s were Sarah McLachlan ("Sweet Surrender") and Harriet Wheeler, the lead singer of The Sundays ("Summertime"). The "lala's" is an historic form of an Irish singing style called "keening." The Irish word for it is "Caointeoireacht." She used it alot in her singing and it's beautiful. It really showcases the girl from Limerick, Ireland. I love that you both singled that part out because it's juxtaposition to the soft almost falsetto singing she does for most of the song makes the song that much richer. Especially with the drum cadence between verses.
    It's really unfortunate that she died from accidental drowning due to her problems with alcohol.
    On a happier "fun fact" note to end, The brothers that play bass and lead guitar have a famous poet ancestor too.

    The band formed without a singer. They put out calls and Dolores sent in her take on this song as her audition. She was instantly chosen as their singer. In a band interview they talked about while recording the first album, Dolores was adamant that they down play the instruments as to not overpower her voice. When she recorded Zombie she turned it on the band and said 'no, you need to go harder than you have ever played before. Make me sing over you.' She just knew how the songs needed to hit.

Linger was all over the radio and they were getting all kinds of attention, but just starting to gain a following. It was a small club, Hollywood area. Afterwards, the band members were just hanging out with a group of fans outside the club. We were chatting with Fergal, the drummer, when Dolores walked out, seeming very shy. Having a number of Irish friends, a few words and phrases in the Irish language had become familiar to me. I called Dolores' name and she turned a looked at me. So excited you are listening to this song today. And fyi, That’s the singer Dolores singing harmony with herself throughout the song. It’s so pretty. Another great hit from them is Linger. Give that one a listen. You’ll enjoy it!!

    My favorite song by The Cranberries has always been "God Be With You Ireland". As someone of Irish descent whose family came from the area that is featured in the video, it is gut-wrenching. But Dolores O' Riordan had a way of grabbing you by your soul with her voice. Some other songs of theirs that I would suggest include "Linger", "Ode to My Family", "Yeat's Grave", "Why" (about her father), "Tomorrow", "Free to Decide", "Salvation", "When You're Gone", "Just My Imagination", "I Will Always", "Time is Ticking Out", "Analyse" & "I Can't Be With You" - just to name a few. Her voice is incomparably ethereal. Her lamenting way of singing is very Irish. Some other singers with similarly lilting voices are Enya & Loreena McKennitt, in addition to Sinead O' Connor (of course). I think y'all should consider doing songs by Irish singers near and on St. Patrick's Day.

      My Grandfather emigrated to USA from Ireland in late 19the century. I never met the man. I am now 70. I never felt affinity for "my Irish heritage in my life except the few times in my life I happened to hear keening - and Celtic singing. I instantly feel in love with Dolores O'Riordan the first time I heard her singing. It ignited that Irish in my blood. But only until the music ended.

    she is saying that things are different with this lover / love she has found. She is the one who is "falling" here - She is "changing every day - in every possible way - and What a different way to be". The implicit message here is that no one before has captured her heart like this - it has always been the other way around - the others all falling deeply in love with her...and now she is the one who is falling deeply in love. Its like a dream and its not quite as it seems in real life up to this moment in her life.

    It wasn't a single, so it's not as widely known, but my favorite Cranberries song is still "Daffodil's Lament". It starts off incredibly dark and somber, and then halfway through the song it shifts and my heart soars every time I hear it. Even if you don't react to it, I highly, highly recommend it!

She had such a great voice because she sings with her soul, not just her voice. And you listen to enough music over the years, you can totally tell the difference between those who sing with their souls and those that don't.

    That vocal effect is called keening and is a common feature in Gaelic singing. Its kinda like the voice breaking that happens to boys in puberty, and female singers tend to be able to control it more than male singers. If you’d like to hear some male voices keening I’d recommend the Scottish group “The Corries”.. lots of fabulous stuff there
