If I could go back in time and save her and Amy... my favorite female voices.
🕊🕊🕊
She's using a technique called "Keening". It's a traditional Irish singing style which she absolutely has mastered.
Keening has nothing to do with singing or music. It's a traditional formal vocal lament and wailing for the dead.
Keening (Irish: Caointeoireacht) is a traditional form of vocal lament for the dead in the Gaelic Celtic tradition, known to have taken place in Ireland and Scotland. Keening, which can be seen as a form of sean-nós singing, was performed in the Irish and Scottish Gaelic languages (the Scottish equivalent of keening is known as a coronach).
@@duncansonoryan I live in Ireland lol but I always thought it was a vocal lament used at funerals only and not in singing.
I was just about to comment about this!
@@duhusker4383 well clearly dolores' voice contradicts that
One of my favorite lyrics of all time “Now I tell you openly you have my heart so don’t hurt me” 😭
You’re what I couldn’t find….love it
🙏🙏👍
Dolores had a mezzo-soprano voice, signature yodel, emphasised use of keening, and strong Limerick accent which gave her one of the most beautiful and unique voices of her time 🙏🏻
Don’t you mean of all time !
Linger is a beautiful song by the Cranberries. It really showcases Delores's voice. I'd react to that one next. You will like Enya too. Also Fade Into You by Mazzy Star. 90's hippy music
Fade into you is such an amazing song
Oh my gosh!! Amber would LOVE Mazzy Star!!!
Mazzy Star would be awesome for a female Friday. Fade into you is a great start.
I wish they would react to Enya.
@@brucew7062 Only Time is my fave!
That captivating thing Dolores O'Riordan is doing with her voice is called keening; it's a traditional Irish style of singing. You can hear hints of it in her countrywoman Sinead O'Connor, as well. Next Stops:
The Cranberries, "Linger"
Ashley MacIsaac, "Sleepy Maggie"
The Pogues, "If I Should Fall from Grace with God"
The best female singers are Irish sopranos. Dolores, Enya, Sinead, Enya's sister from Clannad Moya Brennan, you name it.
Yes! I could'nt remember what it's called, thanks. I also love how she doubles her voice and harmonizes with herself. Some of those intervals are just amazing. Most bands would've just doubled the melody, note-for-note.
The mention of the ending sounding "tribal" probably stems from the fact that Ireland is an island with a cultural mythology steeped in ancient chieftains, kings and magic. I love the theme from Harry's Game, the lyrics sung by Moya in Irish.
@@jdheaton2411 Wow, she can harmonize with herself?! I've only seen Lalah Hathaway do this.
Belly (Tanya Donelly), Throwing Muses, The Sundays, and one of my all-time fave 90's voices, Juliana Hatfield.
I met Dolores before she passed, at a meet and greet. She was so tiny; like a little pixie. Her voice was heavenly yet powerful. I'll miss her forever
I've heard people say they can't believe that tiny person could produce such a powerful voice. But there you are.
I nearly cried when you said "her notes have wings". Damn
Linger is my favorite song by the Cranberries. Check that out soon!
I was going to write the same thing, also my favorite song from them!
Linger definitely
Also my favorite, surprise not seeing more request for this song in the comments , definitely the song that goes under the title as a Classic
Same! "Linger" is my favorite ❤️
In Ireland when she hits certain singing notes its called "keening" its like a Swiss yodel. I miss her! Such an amazing singer. You should listen to "ode to my family".
Do people in Ireland actually call it that though???
@@popland1977 yes
@@popland1977 Also looked up Sean-nos Which keening is a part of
@@popland1977 It was originally done while grieving a dead loved one. Similar to what you hear at some Muslim funerals today.
It’s more or less died out in it’s original form but has survived through folk songs.
@@Dreyno oh yeah it is a bit like that, I'd never noticed
"Ode to My Family" is a must and really shows more of her voice.. Love her and the band.
Linger by the Cranberries is absolutely one of the most beautiful songs this 60 year old has ever heard. Please do it next. It’s amazing.
J/Amber, their "Linger" is next for you!!! Such vocal control and power!! Very unique voice!
I wept when Dolores O'Riordan died. What a marvelous talent. "Dreams" was my introduction to them, and remains one of my favorites of all time. Everyone knows them for "Zombie", but they had so many great songs! "Linger", "Ode to My Family", "Salvation", "Hollywood", "Analyse", all great. Your next one MUST be "When You're Gone". It's so, so, so, beautiful, and it encapsulates every ounce of emotion Dolores can put into her magnificent Irish voice. Thanks for doing this! P.S. Another two of my favorite female vocalists of the early 90s were Sarah McLachlan ("Sweet Surrender") and Harriet Wheeler, the lead singer of The Sundays ("Summertime"). Their voices were so clean and lilting and soaring and gorgeous. I hope you will check them out sometime.
She was the voice of the ‘90’s…
@Patrick Hodges I have to add the song "Wanted" to your list of great songs by The Cranberries. Their first album had Dreams, Linger, and Wanted on it and remains one of my favorite albums.
+1 for Linger, that's a good next track for the Cranberries.
I still tear up when I hear her voice 💔
@@donnastewart2280 She was going to duet with Bad Wolves on their cover of "Zombie", when they got word that she'd passed. They recorded it anyway in her honor. It's a great version.
The "lala's" is an historic form of an Irish singing style called "keening." The Irish word for it is "Caointeoireacht." She used it alot in her singing and it's beautiful. It really showcases the girl from Limerick, Ireland. I love that you both singled that part out because it's juxtaposition to the soft almost falsetto singing she does for most of the song makes the song that much richer. Especially with the drum cadence between verses.
It's really unfortunate that she died from accidental drowning due to her problems with alcohol.
On a happier "fun fact" note to end, The brothers that play bass and lead guitar have a famous poet ancestor too.
Fantastic drummer too
The band formed without a singer. They put out calls and Dolores sent in her take on this song as her audition. She was instantly chosen as their singer. In a band interview they talked about while recording the first album, Dolores was adamant that they down play the instruments as to not overpower her voice. When she recorded Zombie she turned it on the band and said 'no, you need to go harder than you have ever played before. Make me sing over you.' She just knew how the songs needed to hit.
Hi jay and amber my wife and i have just started listening to you two and we love you two i am 62 and think u r great
I.m 71 and I too find this channel a warm, safe pkace to be
I could write 1000 words on how much this song means to me, but I don't think many people would care. So I'll just thank you for the reaction, and I'm glad you liked the song :)
Same!
This is a song that you love it the first time you hear it. Absolute masterpiece by the Cranberries. RIP Delores.
Dolores O'Riordan was a gifted woman - and she shared that gift with us. God bless Dolores. :)
Dolores somehow combined ethereal fragility and overwhelming power in her vocals. Any Cranberries song is great, but I'd recommend Ode To My Family as one where they really stripped the song back to her incredible voice.
Love, love, love The Cranberries.
This song keeps me humble as a bassist. It reminds me that as fun as it is to be movin and grooving all over the place, sometimes just a simple steady single note drive is all that is needed to set a perfect song foundation.
Honestly one of my favorite bass lines to play. It just makes me feel good
The Cranberries, Counting Crows, The Smashing Pumpkins...3 bands that no matter where I am or what i`m doing when I hear them i`m always transported straight back to my teenage years in the early to mid 90`s...so many good memories always come flooding back...
Yes, 💯. I don’t think they’ve reacted to Counting Crows.
Takes me back too - good memories. I was in my late teens and early 20's when the Cranberries, Counting Crows, and The Smashing Pumpkins hit the radio and music video scene. So many great bands and songs from the early to mid-'90s. I can't think of a better time of music than that. The day Dolores O'Riordan died absolutely broke me. Now that I'm nearing 50 years old, I'm finding songs like Dreams, Linger, Ode to my Family are having a nostalgic effect - happiness but also a little sense of melancholy.
@@jenniferkasowicz9463 "August And Everything After" doesn`t have a bad track on it, the whole album is pure gold!
@@kob711 Yeah, I got lucky and turned 13 in 1990 so between 13 and 21 some of the most iconic music was released, it was a great time for truly good music...
@@ca9968 yes! One of those special albums I rank as “I can listen to the whole album and never skip a song.”
The “yodeling” is called keening. Great singer who was greatly influenced by Sinead O’Connor btw..! Hint hint ;) Cranberries have a lot of great albums and songs, happy to see them on this channel.
I will never stop being amazed by the quality of music Ireland has produced. U2, Sinead O'Connor, Cranberries, Hozier, The Pogues, Clannad, Thin Lizzy, The Corrs, Snow Patrol... for a nation of that size they seem to be bursting at the seams with musical talent. They have such a strong musical culture it sometimes seems as though every single Irish pub has at least 3 or 4 local bands or artists who regularly play there.
RIP Dolores. What a voice!
EDITED TO ADD: There is a very tribal feel to a lot of Irish and Scottish music because they have Celtic traditions. A lot of the instrumentation and orchestration stems from traditional forms which go back centuries.
Snow Patrol is Irish?
@@vincentjoyce5100 I think they're mostly Northern Irish
Please, don’t forget the amazing guitarist Rory Gallagher… by the way, Ireland hace several literature Nobel Prizes…
House of pain!
Don't forget the ethereal Enya.
I love her angelic voice and Irish lilt. She was also an incredible live performer. What a tragic loss for us all.
It's called 'keening ' which is the old mourning cry in Ireland. When the banshee spirit cried or Keened as it's known it signified the death of someone in that house.
The Cranberries were ace. Dolores O'Riordan voice was wonderful, with her Irish keening. Was sad when she tragically died in 2018.
Yes react to zombie again now you know what it was about.
I can't find the reaction to Zombie. If they have done it, where is it, and if they haven't, they need to do it ASAP.
@@clykke it got taken down by youtube.. it stayed up for a bit
@@Sportsref13 Oh, that sucks.
Pretty much every guy I knew back in the 90s who heard her voice, fell fast and hard for her. She reminds me of Fiona Apple in that way. So many hearts broke for this chick! RIP Dolores O'Riordan. You are sorely missed.
What is it with the Irish? I swear they always know how to make great music that takes you into a trance, like state. The world truly misses Dolores and the Cranberries.
Dolores O'Riordans vocal styling that you described as "Whisper Singing" ( I love it ) is called a Celtic wail from her Irish heritage. Much like Enya and Sined O'Conner
Sinead O’Connor
keening ,.......(of a sound) prolonged and high-pitched, typically in a way that expresses grief or sorrow.
What a beautiful voice. RIP Delores
Florence and the machine The dog days are over for F / F she has such an amazing voice her live performances are awesome!
Dog Days is a good song and was likely their biggest hit by my favorites from that album are Drumming Song and Girl With One Eye, highly recommend checking them both out as well.
YES! Any song by them.
I think you guys would really enjoy the band Enigma, and the song Return To Innocence. It has some tribal music blended into a synth pop groove that makes you bob your head and feel relaxed at the same time. Love your channel! Thanks for making a lot us smile each day.
YES
Absolutely agree... both song and video are amazing!
OMGGGGG YEEEESSSSSSSS
AGREED that's my top fave Enigma song! That and Gravity of Love.
My favourite song by Enigma awesome song a classic 😍😍
Dreams is my favorite of their songs, since I first heard it long ago. I saw The Cranberries when they first performed in L.A., touring that classically-titled debut album, (Everybody Else is Doing It, So Why Can't We?) Linger was all over the radio and they were getting all kinds of attention, but just starting to gain a following. It was a small club, Hollywood area. Afterwards, the band members were just hanging out with a group of fans outside the club. We were chatting with Fergal, the drummer, when Dolores walked out, seeming very shy. Having a number of Irish friends, a few words and phrases in the Irish language had become familiar to me. I called Dolores' name and she turned a looked at me. I said to her, "fáilte" which means "welcome." She lit up with a smile I will never forget.
liar
@@Alix777. You may need to create fantasies to make yourself feel significant, but don't project your psychosis on me. I don't tell stories that didn't actually happen. I have no reason to. Are so insecure you have to assume everyone else is too? Pretty pathetic.
That's a cool visual of her...
@@Alix777. way to announce that you've had an uneventful, mundane boring life. Just because you've never experienced anything even remotely exciting doesn't mean nobody else has 🤡
An angel smiled onto you friend.
A great suggestion for Female Friday is "Sixpence none the richer" their hits "Kiss me" and "There she goes" are very similar to this song.
Also Breathless by The Corrs would be similar to your suggestions and a great pick. Hope they do them all.
Sixpence none the richer “breathe your name” is great as well.
Dolores O’Riordan had a powerful voice. And I agree, she whisper and power sings-similar to Sinead O’Connor. Both are Irish women, so maybe that’s how they learned to sing in church-like Southern gospel singers-or traditional folk singers. 🥰 Please do Zombie again, it’s worth sharing with the world.
Another beautiful singer is Bjork-she’s from Iceland. I recommend Bjork’s “It’s oh so Quiet” or “Possibly”. Both are amazing songs.
Love the new Merch!!
Can we "Pray" for Sinead? She is not in a good place now.
Army of me
Sean-nos is it traditional Celtic song Tradition which includes Keening (Chaointeoireacht) songs, traditional songs of lament for the dead in the Gaelic Celtic tradition. Many Irish pop bands and rock bands are influenced by the Celtic culture. Celtic is pronounced with a K just so you know in the Irish language, there is no K in the Irish language. Below is a link you can hear the familiar tones It’s spiritual and tribal.
czcams.com/video/JubYgYAxujw/video.html
True Celtic singing at the end.
Oh shit! She got me, she got me good(tears) Dolores voice is really something! Nice reaction!
So excited you are listening to this song today. And fyi, That’s the singer Dolores singing harmony with herself throughout the song. It’s so pretty. Another great hit from them is Linger. Give that one a listen. You’ll enjoy it!!
My favorite song by The Cranberries has always been "God Be With You Ireland". As someone of Irish descent whose family came from the area that is featured in the video, it is gut-wrenching. But Dolores O' Riordan had a way of grabbing you by your soul with her voice. Some other songs of theirs that I would suggest include "Linger", "Ode to My Family", "Yeat's Grave", "Why" (about her father), "Tomorrow", "Free to Decide", "Salvation", "When You're Gone", "Just My Imagination", "I Will Always", "Time is Ticking Out", "Analyse" & "I Can't Be With You" - just to name a few. Her voice is incomparably ethereal. Her lamenting way of singing is very Irish. Some other singers with similarly lilting voices are Enya & Loreena McKennitt, in addition to Sinead O' Connor (of course). I think y'all should consider doing songs by Irish singers near and on St. Patrick's Day.
I have to assume the only reason there hasn't been an Enya and/or Loreena McKinnett playthrough is copyright strikes. But talk about immersive sound....
Loreena is one of my favorites. Would love some reactions to her music/voice!
Loreena McKennitt has a truly decadent band rich tone that allows you to melt into her music.
God Be With You is just Dolores, not The Cranberries.
My Grandfather emigrated to USA from Ireland in late 19the century. I never met the man. I am now 70. I never felt affinity for "my Irish heritage in my life except the few times in my life I happened to hear keening - and Celtic singing. I instantly feel in love with Dolores O'Riordan the first time I heard her singing. It ignited that Irish in my blood. But only until the music ended.
I’m getting a Dolores tattoo on my chest in May. She’s one of my favorite singers. Truly an angel if ever there was one.
she is saying that things are different with this lover / love she has found. She is the one who is "falling" here - She is "changing every day - in every possible way - and What a different way to be". The implicit message here is that no one before has captured her heart like this - it has always been the other way around - the others all falling deeply in love with her...and now she is the one who is falling deeply in love. Its like a dream and its not quite as it seems in real life up to this moment in her life.
Love The Cranberries!! Dolores had such an amazing voice, try “Ode To My Family” next. Amber, you should also do some female led punk…try The Distillers “City Of Angels”.
yes! or the hunger by distillers too
Yes, Ode to My Family is a great recommendation.
Beautiful song. R.i.p. Dolores O'Riordan
I would describe her voice as Ethereal (extremely delicate and light in a way that seems too perfect for this world).
It wasn't a single, so it's not as widely known, but my favorite Cranberries song is still "Daffodil's Lament". It starts off incredibly dark and somber, and then halfway through the song it shifts and my heart soars every time I hear it. Even if you don't react to it, I highly, highly recommend it!
You guys are on fire, The Cranberries? Their voices makes you float and the music together so dreamy. They hold a special place in my heart.
For some reason I picture in my mind a young woman discovering herself and opening herself to her dreams. Dolores had such a beautiful hypnotic voice. 🤗😊💋🌈
She's adding her own harmonies, its a trademark for The Cranberries and its awesome.
React to Linger! You'll love it! Her voice was exceptional! No one sounds like her. That little break in her voice, that little yodel, grabs me. Love the Cranberries !
Probably one of the top five singers male or female of all time hands down. Miss her voice
It's a form of yodeling
I'm so glad I got to see this before they took it down. When Delores passed away, I was literally depressed about it. She had such a great voice because she sings with her soul, not just her voice. And you listen to enough music over the years, you can totally tell the difference between those who sing with their souls and those that don't.
So thankful I got to see The Cranberries in concert. Dolores bounced around the stage like a super ball. Just incredible energy. Good choice!!!
I love The Cranberries. Linger was the first song I heard from them and I just fell in love. Sorry to hear that Zombie was blocked, that is a stunning song.
One of the greatest musical voices of all time!!! RIP Dolores O'Riordan.
You mentioned that the Cranberries song included an "I'll Take You There" moment. Have you heard that song? It's by the Staple Singers. It's a classic! With Mavis Staples singing lead, it is a candidate for Female Friday...
Let's Do It Again is possibly THEE most underrated song of the 1970s. My favorite Staple Singers song ❤
I agree Brian- they will love that song.
you saw the stapled on the bAND and the staples TH wEIGHT
That outro is pure bliss. I've heard this song a hundred times and that ending always gets me.
So old world Celtic, and wonderful.. This Irish lad approves..
Dolores O'Riordan had such a great voice!
Linger is my fave song of theirs, showing her beautiful soft voice again on that song, it will be sure to make you feel emotional, she was such an angel.
How much Dolores and Sinead sound alike... a true Irish vibe, SHIVERS!!! ❤❤❤
Yes. "Her notes have wings." J, you are so quotable!
One of my favorite songs OF ALL TIME. What a timeless masterpiece.
Mine too!! It just takes me right back to that time!
One of the most profoundly emotionally deep performances is by the British female duo Shakespeare's Sister "- "Stay"..
Was listening to that at work! It’s on my play list ❤️
Isnt one of the singers in Shakespeare's Sister Irish?
@@chriswhamilton British/Irish. She was originally in Bananarama. Which is another group they need to react to!
@@chriswhamilton Yes Siobhan Fahey from Dublin.
Agreed! Both the video and the vocals of “Stay” make it a masterpiece!
When Dolores sings rest in peace my love you literally are floating on a cloud
That vocal effect is called keening and is a common feature in Gaelic singing. Its kinda like the voice breaking that happens to boys in puberty, and female singers tend to be able to control it more than male singers. If you’d like to hear some male voices keening I’d recommend the Scottish group “The Corries”.. lots of fabulous stuff there
" Ode To My Family " ya'll will love it.🥰
What she does with her voice is Irish Keening. Which is for the dead. RIP, Delores. Your music has touched many.
And "Daffodil Lament"...
Love Dreams and Zombie. Ode to My Family and Linger are another 2 great songs by The Cranberries.
The Cranberries opens doors to what the late Dolores can vocally express with velvet.
So happy to see you react to this particular song.
One of the best female singer's. God be with you Ireland 🇮🇪 that's a beautiful song from the cranberries n RIP 🙏
RIP, Dolores. Your voice was angelic, even while you were on the earth.
Wilson Philips for Female Friday. You're missing out.
"How" is one of my favorite songs by The Cranberries.
Yes, same!!! Excellent deep cut, I remember the first time I ever heard it in the movie Empire Records!❤❤❤
This is my fav songs from the Cranberries
I knew Amber was gonna react the way she did when Dolores' voice kicked in! As soon as I saw this notification, I said to myself that this is right up Amber's alley.
You made my day with this song!! I absolutely love The Cranberries!! Delores voice was so fantastic and unique. You have to check out Linger! ❤️❤️ So sad when we lose one of these great voices. If you like a tribal sound try Enigma “Return to Innocence”
i was lucky to spend 3 months in Limerick in 1996. That IS the sound of Ireland!
The ending has me crying one time. Just so beautiful.
"Her notes have wings" is the most accurate description!
When You’re Gone is a favourite of mine from the Cranberries, what a stunning voice Dolores had
I also like “I Can’t be with You”
At the very end, when it sounds "tribal" with that guy chanting with her, I got goosebumps !
Again. "Her notes have wings." Fly high......
Hellz yeah! The Cranberries are a great Fee-male Friday can of sweetness and fire! Excellent pick! I call this “the yodel song” cuz her voice is so angelic.
Beautiful voice, another beautiful soul gone too soon…RIP Dolores O’Roirdan✨…LOVE The Cranberries, as others have said Linger is another beautiful song from them.
The sound you hear Dolores doing is called: "keening"; it is a sound some Irish make when they're singing. RIP Delores. You have experienced Sinead O'Connor & now the Cranberries; you should experience Enya: "Caribbean Blue"; one of the most beautiful songs you will ever hear.. Enya's family: sister, Moya Brennan and brothers have a band called Clannad; they are another gr8 Irish band: "Harry's Game" is a good song to start w/Clannad; it is from a movie. U2 Bono and Moya had a hit with: "In a Lifetime", worth listening to.
30 years ago I feel in love with Delores and the Cranberries, that love will remain with me forever x
Cool song!!🤘🔥
RIP Dolores! One of the best voices. So many great tunes. Zombie, Ode to my Family, Linger. Give them all a shout!
They have a fantastic drumer, the amount of changes he puts into their songs is amazing, he never seems to get any credit but without him the songs wouldn't be half as good.
What she did with her voice there is called "keening", and she does it very well!
Check Shirley Manson/Garbage - an absolute mind-blowing Scottish female rocker and song writer. “Bleed Like Me” is my favorite, but they’ve had many chart-songs: “Only Happy When It Rains”, “Stupid Girl”… multi Grammy nominations, multi movie single releases. Awesome. And some of the best live performance events I’ve ever attended.
All great songs-I particularly like Stupid Girl
Aaah I’ve been waiting for you guys to text to the cranberries for since you started. One of my favourite bands that has ever been. I missed when you did Zombie because by the time i clicked on it, it was taken down. If you could find a way to do it again that’d be awesome!
Those harmonies at the end is one of the most wonderful things ever recorded in the history of music. Absolutely moving, brings you to tears almost
The Gaelic blood in me must so stirred by this!
I'm so glad I discovered your Channel. You guys are the sweetest couple ever. I saw The Cranberries in concert back in the 90s. I was blown away by the singer's voice
Such a beautiful voice yet a tragic ending.
It’s the celtic spirit in her that can’t be described and gets so mesmerizing
Beautiful... Simply Beautiful... What a Tan-Fas-Tic Production/Composition...
