Puerto Nuevo aka Lobster Town!

  • We recently took a road trip down to Puerto Nuevo to surf, eat amazing lobster, drink margaritas and soak up the views! Do you have a favorite lobster spot in Puerto Nuevo?
In the 50's and early 60's this was a little fishing village where Americans would meet local guides at the billboard off the road. That billboard was for Newport Cigaretts - Puerto Nuevo is Newport in Spanish. This is the likely derivation of the name. One day the wife of a fisherman starting cooking the fish her husband and his clients caught... and the restaurant business was born. That original restaurant is known as #2 (this has to do with the lot numbering system) #1 was the second restaurant in town. Has a nice Mexico touch to it. As an aside... there are 8 restaurants in town with the name Ortegas. They are related and the competition is not all that friendly. Puerto Nuevo is a fun stop - the lobster is good - and you have plenty of choices for food, shopping and people watching!
Rosarito is located about 20 miles south of the boarder, on the way to Ensenada. Puerto Nuevo is part of Rosarito, and in this little town has less than 200 habitants. Although super small, Puerto Nuevo has about 30 restaurants within a mile of each other, most of them serving lobster.
In this trip we also visited a few of the wineries in the Valle de Guadalupe, tried some other restaurants and surfed a couple of different beaches. More videos about those still to come.

Well i remember this place when it was only one restaurant and it was the fishermen’s home. The lobsters were made the same way and it cost about $7 for the entire meal. As the fishermen’s family grew they all opened up the other restaurants so its all in the family. Everyone here is related to the original fishermen that started Puerto Nuevo. Enjoy!!

Please do not ever deep fry lobster never mind trying to make out it is the best lobster in Puerto Nuevo.I have been a fully qualified chef for 33 years and never heard of anything as grotesque or ridiculous in all my time If you want and need everything deep fried then fine, keep to french fries, calamari Kfc or shrimp, but unless you actually know how to cook lobster please don't ruin what could be peoples first and obviously expensive first try of this beautifully sweet and delicate crustacean.
