Ultimecia is an underrated villain. She's not as iconic as Sephiroth or Kefka and you don't really see her very much over the course of the game, but that made her a lot more creepy and mysterious to me. Her castle is an amazing final dungeon, the character designs on her various forms are top notch, and her battle music is some of the best in the entire series.
And she was my nightmare when i was kid

@@DarkCloud3000 To each their own. I never took Edea seriously as a villain because she's a complete pushover in battle. Too much build up and no payoff.
I know Kefka finished his task and I know sSephiroth is iconic, but Ultamecia is so underrated. It wasn't trying to stop her from destroying the planet or becoming a god. She already did that! She was on like step 5 of her master plan to become immortal by literally messing with time and space. That is insane to me.
When the villain is that big and cosmic it opens up plot stuff like sorceress edea, which is so interesting to me. The villains become your allies and reveal even deeper villains
@@alexlight4178 Exactly, and knowing that in the future Ultamecia won and destroyed all her enemies makes you wonder if the future also had its "hero's" he fought to save the world and ultimately lost their lives. It adds such an overwhelming shadow for Ultamecia and in some ways an extreme sadness as well. Beating her doesn't just save Squall and the gangs lives, but literally everyone and everytime period.
It’s similar to Chaos from the first final fantasy.
ITS COS OF THE FOCKING DRAW SYSTEM MATE. it pushs this game down. even without hard puzzles the game is awesome! but the everyone hated the draw system, so it takes away the power of this game and its history.

Hmm when I fought Ultimecia back in the day and surprised me she is definitely the very definition of "this isn't even my final form" meme
Japanese rpgs are always like this, lol godlike beings as the final boss, crazy magic, explosions, transformations, etc.. without any kind of context. In my experience with the genre, only Persona 4 and Persona 5 actually provides an explanation to everything. In other jrpgs, it's just "magic" and "reasons"
Previous reply already brought up Persona, but you should check out Nyx Avatar. That boss has 14 forms, although they all retain the same appearance.

Ultimecia (Final Form) - Still one of the best pieces of boss music ever in a Final Fantasy game. The bass on the drums on the downbeat is just EPIC!
Took me several attempts to beat this battle and several hours. In the end, my party got wiped by that epic attacks he does and Angelo Revive triggered and resurrected Rinoa. She used a phoenix down to revive Squall who subsequently used the Lion Heart limit break to finish him off. The best moment of my gaming life.
That would have been epic as fuck!

Eden 12 savage (2nd phase), look it up if you wanna see a modern (very recent even) final fantasy fight reusing this same music piece (fresh remake).
Though be aware it may be a spoiler if you play (or intend to play) FF14 yourself. (savage raids are 'hardcore' content though, there's a normal version of the eden raids but the same battle doesn't have the 2nd phase in normal - thus also not 'the extreme' as battle music)

That small cut out of the beginning of The Extreme totally rifts the mood from the original which was so encapsulating and jaw dropping. A very intense moment in the game and just taking away the first few notes really changes that vibe.
Oh right! I skipped through the video and didn't notice. What a screw up! Another reason why I'll get my GF to play the original on my PS2. I stopped console gaming, had to trash my ps3 but kept my ps2 and certain games.

This remaster also has sync failures between music and some scenes, it's shameful.

May be Ultimecia so great that her powers and her consciousness is the same. And don`t forget about Ultimecia`s the most big mistake - she not kill Squall in the end of Disk 1, when he was in her hands in literal sense ..... I cannot understand why ..... she know she will fall because of SeeD ..... and after the first battle with Squall most likely he is the SeeD that is the most dangerous for her ..... and she not kill him ..... very, very strange act .....

actually there was an interview with Square Enix i think a month or so back. They said if FF7R becomes successful then maybe they'll consider a full on remake of FF8 I hope this is true FF8 was my first exposure to Turn based rpgs and FF as a whole though after playing FF8 i was introduced myself with FF1-4 + Tactics on the good old psp though it was a shame that FF type 0's psp port was never released imo.... FF13's FNC was a huge flop and type 0 was better than those other 3.

FFVIII "The Extreme" is one of Nobuo Uematsu's best final boss music beside "One Wing Angel" and "Dancing Mad".
Those three final boss ost are Uematsu's best.

Not sure if they have anymore, but hearing concert at the time were dope. They did a few tours.
I remember seeing this boss for the first time when I was younger. The idea of her being a time sorceress bent on absorbing all space and time to become a god never really hit me until I saw her final form. I had always seen her as a really cool/interesting/beautiful woman who knows how to get something when she needs it, but the moment I saw her final form I became horrified and scared realizing and reminded that she wasn’t a human anymore. She was a witch, a monster, a demon, a threat and she had to die.
she became what other bigoted humans made her out to be
Her final form is symbolic of her desire to self-destroy to achieve her goal of becoming a goddess. Throughout the game you get to understand she disdains the world that came after the sorceress and sorcerer from Esthar were left underpowered, and she especially blames SeeD who have gained the ability to control magic themselves as regular humans, making the sorcerer/sorceress of the past even more invalid. So while her backstory is up for debate she is becoming one with creation in the end of FF VIII. Pretty cool final boss to a great game.
Her final form is an Eldritch Abomination to put Cthulu to shame. This grotesque, oddly symmetrical, gigantic body, void in the face, starry night in the "gown", it creeped me out.
Besides, by destroying the whole space-time continuum just by being there and by drawing Apocalypse from herself, basically thinking about it and making it true, she might be the most powerful final boss of the series. Even God Kefka could not do this.
Meanwhile her last words make her more human than most villains. She wanted to become the universe so that she (more specifically, her memories) wouldn't become destroyed by time. She was like an aging person contemplating their lives.
Blasting zone looks so dramatic - Squall's sword grows so big it grows out into space, yet does less than 9999 damage :D
Brings back memories of when i was a kid.5 years old in 1998 watching my uncle mike play this then teaching me was some of my most cherished memories.even begged him to buy me a squall figurine just because i wanted to play with the gunblade lmao

I always smile when I think about it.
When I beat this game, I felt like I won at life. The most satisfying video game victory then, and even now in my mind.
No sequels, no part 2's, no hidden endings. Just a great game with a great ending.

My theory on Ultimecia is pretty terrifying.
This is the way I see it. In her final moments she realizes what she was doing was way wrong. So she engineers this whole scheme to use Squall and Co. to destroy her before it's too late. Which her younger self misinterprets and goes nuts and perpetuates the cycle. Making Ultimecia a horrifyingly tragic character who had literally set events in motion to stop her insane, future self.
Quistis is under appreciated that blue magic was opt.
Exactly, when fighting the ruby dragons before the bahamut fight, her degenerator magic was so useful
The first time I beat this game (when it came out), I actually wound up accidentally soloing the second half of this fight with Quistis. She is a beast.
I only really used her for degenerator, never even realised she had Griever's big move

I remember I was about to die in the end while fighting, and Gilgamesh appear and used Zantetsuken, and I was like "Oh yeah, I'm gonna win", but he missed. Luckily I was able to defeat the boss shortly after. That was the most adrenaline I had ever for all games I've played.

One of the things I liked about Ultimecia is that she didn’t die instantly like Kefka and Sephiroth. All that build up in the story and they die from a few Ultimas and one Omnislash respectively. Very anticlimactic. Ultimecia didn’t get much development, but at least it felt like a final boss fight. She could take a hit.
I’m scared to fight her lol! And I love female villains and I want more female protagonist and antagonist! Also I wish she was as popular as Sephiroth who seems to be every way nowadays! When I do fight her I need to make sure I’m prepared and all my characters gotta hit for 9999 😂

And I was game over 2 time battling her in nintendo. Hell judgement and metero is a menace combo. That's like overkilled. Her final form is a nightmare material to me as a kid. I'm terrified to go to the bathroom or sleep alone because of her void face

The final boss design is one the best in FF (especially if you see Ulty swinging upside down at the bottom), and using Shockwave Pulsar shows that part of the boss is the space-time she's absorbing. Was disappointed to not see a Draw-Cast of the Apocalypse spell though.
If she cast apocalypse then it would be the end for the whole team 🥲

Selphie's "The End" will finished this battle very quick. I always use that aside from casting aura and hero.
I remember that I got The End for the first time in one of these Ultimecia forms battle. I used it and it failed, don't know why!
This boss was plain to me right up until she junctioned griever and I limit broke her as squall. The idea of Squall beating the Griever, the ideal he strove towards and never believed he could achieve, hit me like a ton of bricks.

Ultimecias final form/true form reminded me the entity inside Lavos. Very dark, very distant, very disturbing because sometimes you don't get a explanation. Sometimes there's just a void. She is the embodiment of the "Abyssinian archetype antagonist" . And that's why she's to me clearly the most malevolent of all the final bosses in the series. She's beyond understanding

I remember playing this with Meltdown then hammering her with Limit Breaks. Once you get the hang of it the battle becomes easy.

I have this feeling that the PS1 FF games will eventually get updated with HD backgrounds. I mean, just look at what they did with Legend of Mana and SaGa Frontier for the PS4.

Final Fantasy 8 is considered by many to be the bastard stepchild of the series. As the top comment says about Ultimecia, she isn't as memorable as many of the big bads, but she had her stroke. Fitting for FF8, very subtly, it's absolutely brilliant. Like Memento, you need to watch/play it twice.
I remember playing this boss battle , I full blown panic I was also hyped up to beat too. Great ass memories.
Btw i really appreciate how you can finish this damn hard final boss just in 15 minutes while my brother used to spend like almost an hour just to finish her off.

I've only ever played the demo for this game. I never would've guess the challenge and mega man style boss maze that is Ultimecia's castle would be the ending.
Bffff the final battle with Ultimecia is so epic
For all of you saying this needs a remaster, while I see where you're coming from, they'll never be able to make her as creepy with voice acting present. If you hear the monologue instead of read it, it wont be as creepy
I agree, sometimes the voice acting ruins the character. They don't sound like what you thought or it's just awful.
The first time I beat Ultimecia was on the PC port of FFVIII. Rinoa was the only character left with critical HP. I was lucky she kept the limit break that gave her invincibility.
