- The debate around Star Fox Adventures has always been, its a good game, but is is a good STAR FOX game? My Star Fox Adventures review aims to answer this question this week on The Completionist.

Now Star Fox Adventures wasn't even supposed to be part of the franchise. But if its a good game doesn't it deserve to be a good Star Fox game? Or does it drift away from what makes Star Fox, well STAR FOX. I understand that going from piloting and doing maneuvers at high speeds to beating enemies with a stick can be quite a shift. But aren't franchises able to evolve and explore other areas of gameplay? And if this wasn't basically Star Fox Dinosaur Planet, would this be a great dinosaur planet game on its own? There's lots of questions here, help me answer some of them below!

I'll take my leave then
Fuck yea!
I really liked Star Fox Adventures. I played it as a kid without knowing anything about else.
Ya fr. I thought it was so good cuz I had not played a Legend of Zelda game yet lolll
I played Star Fox 64 before this as a kid and still loved it 🤷♂️
Same I played past Zelda games like ocarina but I didn't truly love the legend of Zelda games til Twilight Princess for GameCube I love star fox adventure and assault.
God my favorite star fox game is star fox assault then star fox adventures both games are really fun with the best star fox stories ever.
I prefer adventures over most zelda games tbh
Unpopular opinion, but I genuinely, unironically loved this game. And beat it multiple times.
However, I will also be the first to admit that I went into the game mostly blind. I was aware of Star Fox and what Star Fox 64 was, but had never played it. I had never played LoZ: Ocarina of Time either. I played Starfox Adventures merely as the game that it was, not as a franchise game and had a great time with it. Save for some of the infuriating puzzles. (Apparently I'm the only person who never had trouble with that lightfoot trial of strength minigame.) Aiming controls were wonky as hell though, I fully agree. They had no idea what they were doing there.
But the game itself is gorgeous. (For the time period it was released) And I have to wholeheartedly disagree on the music argument Jirard made. I loved the character that the tunes carried. The different tracks for different areas. And I've got to attribute that to the fact that it was composed by David Wise, who worked alongside Grant Kirkhope for Donkey Kong Country's tracks, among others.
Also yeah, Tricky is an irritating companion, but I tolerated it.
Either way, the main point here is yes. That floating dinosaur shopkeeper is the best thing ever.
"Put that down! You don't have enough SCARABS!"
The OST is totally worthy of listening to on it's own tbh... David Wise captured the tribal and shamanic feel quite exquisitely in my opinion. It would have fit better had it paired with the original characters and rather esoteric plotline intended for Dinosaur Planet, but it's still an amazing soundtrack nonetheless. David Wise seemed to be creating the music with an ancient, mystical, psychedelic landscape in mind, and the starfox aspect somewhat takes away from that. Regardless, it's still a wholesome game, even though it's full potential was quashed by Nintendo...
Star Fox Adventures was my first Gamecube game, ever. I too ironically love it.
Unpopular Opinion? Didn't most people love this game when it first came out? I did. lol oh and the aiming? yeah trash, though that was kind of a Rare thing, a lot of their games aiming was like that.
the original starfox games are dogshit compared to adventures
I 100% agree, but HOW DID YOU BEAT THE STRENGTH TRIAL
I think the "sexy music" that plays and the "objectification" were MEANT to be an implication that Fox is extremely smitten, but RARE are(or were) jokers who couldn't help but make it ridiculous.
Compared to the types of Jokes they made out of the Extras in Banjo Tooie, I'm not surprised.
As a kid I really enjoyed this game, I found it a whole shitton of fun. As a Star Fox game, it is definitely an outlier, but even today, I still found it very fun.
I agree, I rented the game and found plenty of enjoyment but I didn't get far until I got older to the point that could comprehend and finish a video game and enjoy the games better moments. I was a little slow on some of the puzzle solving early in the game and got stuck.
That beginning dinosaur music gave me a fat nostalgia boner
This is a great game I used to play it all the time. I've probably beaten it around 3 times I'd definitely play it again if I still had a GameCube. I wish they had made a sequel that was even better.
It's not an outlier, Fox is a mercenary who takes on jobs for money, he originally was on foot (this is shown in the comic before the game was released)
Not an outlier, my brothers, cousins, and I are all gamers and all of us love this game.
"I'll be playing it with a gamexube controller."
Now complete it with the DK Bongos XP
But the GameCube controller is objectively one of the best controllers ever. It's not a handicap.
@@flightlesschicken7769 I think his point was that he wad playing it as it was intended dispite playing on the Wii... Forgetting you can ONLY play this game with a game cube controller regardless.
@@Left4Cake ah, I see
I vote for a Resident Evil 4 Chainsaw Controller run
@Joe the Third You can play it with an Xbox 360 controller with an emulator? You can use a DDR mat if you play it on an emulator. What's your point?
I super absolutely loved this game. One of my favorite games of the gamecube. So underrated.

@@EclipsisTenebris had the same issue with two different gamecubes
Well I think he was referring on obtaining actual footage of the game for the video, component cables for the gamecube are rare and hard to find, also ridiculously expensive, so if you have a Wii it can serve the same purpose since it has the capability for digital image.
I remember the test of fear to this day and how that minigame kept me stuck for weeks.

I just find it hilarious that this game while decent in its own right will always be remembered for 1 thing above all else, the introduction of one of the biggest furrybait characters of all time.

@Aidansreviews Productions Fucking die me to death

Now complete Star Fox Assault, the game no one talks about.
Now that's an underrated game it should be the gamecube starfox game people talk about much better than this game
I wonder why nobody talks about it :I
@@JamVsJam. Probably because it's slow and way too linear. There's really nothing else to do once the story mode is done, unless you collect those flags for unlocking those classic namco shooters. It's not bad, but it's not what you would call "spectacular" either
The only thing it does really well is the multiplayer and the soundtrack.
@@AlphaladZXA if i had to guess it was late in the GC life and the system only sold 22 million.
I personally enjoyed it, it was decent to me
This is the most underrated game of all time. I love it.
I'm definitely talking with rose-colored glasses now, but I remember fondly this game. I loved so much this game. I was young at the time. Fox was my favorite character from Super Smash Bros., I was really impressed by the "next gen" graphics and the details of the world; mainly the fur and the grass. And moreover, Fox, a young adventurer, lands in an "unknown" planet where he (you) discover new stuff constantly. It's another world! Not to mention, you are on a quest to save a beautiful girl! Precisely these are the things that I yearn in games nowadays, but simply aren't present. It's sad but I haven't enjoyed games at the same level as yore.
Now do star fox assault.
Do it
One of my favorites GC games, I remember getting impressed by the graphics(specially Fox's fur and the water, it seemed so realistic for me), not to mention the songs. I replayed this game a lot when I was a kid and I remember that for some years I could only play till 56% progress, that's the part you need to go through 2 mini-games at the village and I couldn't beat the one you need to mash A button really fast. After beating this game I begged my parents to buy me SF Assault, and when I finished that one I cried because it was too short and I really wanted some new SF content.
I want to get this game for three reasons:
1) It looks sorta fun
2) I need to expand my GameCube collection
3) F U R R Y M E M E T I M E
You defiantly should, even if you haven't played it before you'll get a great sense of nostalgia and overall its a good title. 7 months late but did you get it?
Graphically I think this game still looks pretty good.
Honestly hasn't aged a bit
It surprisingly aged well
@iLoveJackingOn
I feel like there was a brief window of time during the Gamecube/PS2 era when 3D games had simple but stylized graphics. These ones held up very well even into the modern age while games from the 360 era went for a more realistic look that is very dated now.
@iLoveJackingOn Because, unlike many 360 games, Gamecube titles utilize colours besides yellow-brown and grey lol.
The game that birthed an entire generation of furries
😏
Listen, im no furbie or whatever, but i would kill to be with that sexy lady fox.
Conkers bad fur day ?
@@thatguy8152 i mean, if sunflowers count as furries, then yes. 100%
Agreed.
Seeing Fox swing the staff at those dinos hearing those chants in the intro music hit me with a huge wave of nostalgia.
I fucking loved this game, one of the first gamecube games I ever played when I was young 🤣
You've really gotta love the irony of Rare being paid to shoehorn Fox into a game in which he really has no place, and writing him as a character who's literally only doing whar he does in the game because he's getting paid for it...
y'all are gonna get hit with copyright infringement because ted's singing was spot-on
You know even if starfox adventures was dinosaur island
Furries would still ship krystal and fox
Krystal was supposed to be Dinosaur plant's main character before Star fox. Nintendo been throwing her under the bus since 2002
@@enderpup9289 Not exactly. She was supposed to be the protagonist along a Wolf dude named Saber. I guess when Fox took Saber's place Nintendo didn't want Fox to ahve to share the starring role with Krystal, so they made her as inconsequential to the story as possible.
@@AndresLionheart No because Krystals story heavily relied on Saber. So when Fox replaced Saber, then Krystals story didn't make any sense so it was instead given to fox as well.
best thing about Star Fox Adventures is the introduction of Krystal...she's been my favorite character in the series ever since.
I loved this game growing up. It was my introduction to Star Fox
It's impossible to read the title as anything other than Stairfax Temperatures

This game is really underated with all the new releases, they could have taken inspiration from this old classic. Man when people bring up all time best gamecube games, this never gets mentioned.
I actually really enjoyed this mission. Nintendo should redo this game and make it much larger. And have Krystal be playable, not trapped in a crystal.
Considering the big N barely does anything Star Fox (this franchise makes Metroid look loved), probably not going to happen... (as much as I agree with you)
I made a mod for that 👀
This is my favorite starfox. I would love to have them remake this.
Star fox,the game that nintendo has no idea what to do with

Most people hate this game because of the jontron video and that's sad
Nah, some just reference his video like Stairfax its a funny video with a few good points espescially towards the original reception of the game. Here's a good let's play of the game from Masaeanela czcams.com/video/agcSkiZLNj8/video.html
I thought it was an okay game. Not great, not terrible.
Its more like zelda lite at least for myself.
Not really. Jon’s video is the reason I throughly enjoy this game.
I dislike this game because I played it. Its a bunch of nothing; dinosaurs that can't feed themselves, mechanics that are kmart brand Zelda, really cheesy sound design, and a whack theme. Its redeeming qualities are all visual, as it uses a lot of effects and shaders that didn't become common until 6+ years later on the HD consoles.
The game actually acknowledges how dumb it is quite a lot, but in a "we didn't want to make it like this," way rather than a self aware one.
Def don't agree about the soundtrack... I found it quite good, very atmospheric and memorable
The title picture didn't have the main protagonist with a beard, what the heck Jirard.
Fox naturally has a beard, the white fur around his muzzle.
How do you give a beard to a furry face?
Fox's beard is so big, it covers his body.
y'all children think this series birthed a bunch of furries but y'all don't even know fritz the cat
shame
That movie somehow got linked to one of the most importsnt times in my life just simply by watching it around the same time. Such a weird movie but genuinely hard to take your eyes off of.
Love this game, still one of my favorites to this day.
In all seriousness, unless I’m just remembering the game through nostalgia, I think SFA could have been a cocoon for the franchise; a great way to expand on the jobs and missions the team takes on. I remember loving the worlds Fox was a part of and being able to do melee combat instead of being stuck behind the cockpit was great. I think if they added more crew involvement and good piloting sections, this could have been the flagship for a new route the franchise could take, where mercenaries don’t just fly through space.
I know this comment is a couple of months old, but I was thinking the exact same thing just a year ago when I was replaying the game. _That's_ the real wasted potential with this game.
I think Namco agreed with that sentiment. At least to me it felt like when they did Assault that was kind of the idea they were going for. Granted they went with a different spin (less fantasy and more tech) but ultimately they incorporated plus expanded (a bit) on the lore established, worked the idea of ground based combat, and tried to have you working as a team with your teammates (some missions had two segments, with you going back and forth to help two parts of your team). Unfortunately it does end up being a team star fox saves the galaxy story line in the end but it didn't seem like Namco wanted to completely excise the ideas created from adventures (unlike platinum games did).

P.S.

This was my first Star Fox game. THIS is what a Star Fox game was to me. Its been 8 years since I've played it, so I doubt it's as good as I remember. :P
NaterTot I recommend checking out the Best Friends LP of this game,
spoiler: this game doesn’t hold up
You are aware that this game is basically Mario 2 or Star Fox? This game is Dinosaur Planet what was turn into Star Fox for marketing reasons, but it has almost nothing to do with franchise itself.
I was young when I originally played it and knew nothing of the other Star Fox games, but I realize the beauty that is Star Fox 64 now.
This was also the first starfox game i've played, i've tried the other starfox games in the series, but starfox adventures will always be in my heart as number 2 (the zelda serie is numba one).
I miss Krystal .She is so cool and prety.
Yeah. people always jump to the conclusion that "She was just made to be a furry's wetdream" or some shit like that. Whenever I knew them as a kid, they were just an amazing member of the Starfox Team. It sucks that they keep trying to reproduce Starfox 64 and abandoning the ideas that helped expand the series. I'd love to see a mix-up of Assault and Starfox Zero with multiplayer. On foot combat and numerous other vehicles to operate would be amazing.
Maybe if the fandom didn't have Nintendo scared to make a Star Fox game that isn't a 64 remake, we could see her again...
She's back in Smash Ultimate as an assist trophy, if that counts.
@@General_Cap Assault was just way to short, and it lacked 64's route system and various other things that could happen on missions for replayability. Though for the little game that was there for assault, it was quite solid.
@@bluenova123 it also had a redundant unlock system for multiplayer maps and characters. I had no idea jetpacks were in the game until I used a 100% save file. Also multiplayer was pretty damn unbalanced across the board, but was still fun to ride atop an arwing as a pilot.
As unappreciative of Jirard's work it may seem, one of my favourite parts of this channel is to see some old childhood favourites appear in my sub box out of nowhere. There's virtually no way for them to come up in any new way in my daily life - except through this channel. And I love that
i got this game for christmas all those years ago with a special limited edition Mario Kart Double Dash gamecube bundle, which also came with its own limited edition all in one zelda disk. which had all the home console zelda games (or most of them anyway) in one disk. I also got Pikmin, Finding nemo, and Harry Potter and the Chamber of secrets. what a day! i spent like an hour playing starfox adventures on my own. before letting my little sister play with me on double dash.
This game was good, but certainly not great. There were just so many parts that were obviously...not done well. The Lightfoot test of strength minigame seemed so broken as a child. Or the complete skip of the General Scales boss fight for Andross. Who thought THAT was a good idea...?
Matthew Jones that test of strength was the WORST as a kid
@@MasterBlade111 Here here! The test of courage was also really annoying because it sent you back with each failure.

OMG!!! Someone remember this game!!!
One of my favourite GameCube games. It has a lot of problems but I love the effort put into it.
Finally! An actual honest review of one of my favorite childhood games. Yes, the game doesnt feel 100% like a starfox game. But Fox is a Space Mercenary. He's supposed to go down to planets and deal with whatever weird thing he encounters there. It's not always going to be "Hey take your arwing and take down these baddies in space."
It's "Hey some planet fully occupied by dinos needs help"
And yes, the game had major weak points. One of them being that we werent able to defeat the main antagonist of the game and just awkwardly shove Andross in there. Andross had no need to be in there. We dont ALWAYS need to fight andross. If they replaced Andross with a hard Scales final boss. It would have been great!
Honestly, I'm glad you were unbiased. Most people just say "Starfox Adventures is a piece of shit" because either they want to agree with other people or because they just dont like change. It was a really good game for it's time and budget.
Thank you for making the review. It was nice to see it from an honest critique perspective.
(One of the worst thing in this game though is that Fox had human fingers in his fingerless glove. Like what the fuck)
Edit: Also, please review Starfox Assault! I feel that game was good and didnt get the recognition it deserved
Grew up with assault and no it does not. It definitely deserves more recognition
Funny thing is, the players guide actually told you how to fight general scales and how to cheese the fight was to wear the soldier disguise.
While I’m sad that Dinosaur Planet the game never got released, it’s honestly for the best. That game was going to be released on the N64DD, and we all know how successful *that* system was.
My biggest problem is that Krystal was shoved to the damsel in distress role. That can be a useful plot element, but it wasted valuable character development. In fact, even the damsel in distress role can be used for character development. Look at peach in the first two Paper Mario games. She was a damsel in distress, but she still did everything she could to help Mario, from gathering information, to giving him useful items. It made Peach charming. In Adventures, Krystal is comatose for 95% of the game. What Nintendo should’ve done is kept the character switching mechanics from DP; have Fox blast his way through dungeons to collect the Spell Stones (because Nintendo’s excuse for Fox not having his blaster was just stupid), and then switch to Krystal to solve puzzles so she can collect the Krazoa Spirits. And they had a perfect reason for why Fox can’t do the Krazoa Tests; only a person with a pure heart can enter the Shrines. While Fox isn’t a bad guy, he’s saving the planet because he’s in desperate need of a paycheck; not exactly a “pure” mindset.
After you get the first Spell Stone and Krazoa Spirit, have Fox and Krystal meet and team up, realizing they need each other in order to save the planet. Boom! More opportunities for character development!
Nintendo had a Golden Goose of story opportunities here, and they squandered it. Maybe they’ll fix it with a remaster, but that seems as unlikely as F-Zero fans getting a new game.
@@MyGamer125 i played this game as a kid, and throughout this video i was thinking about how this game could be improved

So much childhood nostalgia flowing through my veins right now. Holy shit.
I have finished this game twice, first around the time of release, and the second time about 2-3 years ago. While I did enjoy the game on both occasions, the atmosphere is pretty great actually.. I did notice on my second playthrough that the game seemed pretty rushed, and that became more apparent further into the game. Scratch that, it was apparent a lot of the time.. I was STUNNED by how freaking short that first "dungeon" was. Especially the second time around. It felt like I just started, and BOOM, boss time. I have to slightly disagree with Jirard about the soundtrack, as I think there are quite a few pieces that really adds to the atmosphere, and makes the overall experience more enjoyable, but I do agree that's it's not a particularly extensive soundtrack. Anyway.. There are a lot of good things in the game, I think everybody should try it out.. But it does feel unfinished, and it would be interesting if this is one of those rare games (HAH, puns) that gets a proper remake, I'm talking back to basics, remove everything Star Fox, and make the game as it was intended to be. Although I have to admit that I personally enjoy the inclusion of Fox and company in this game.

Everything Jirard didn't really like, I really like. But I do agree with his opinion on the traditional Star Fox levels.

You been doing Star Fox Games non stop dude !!!!
I have to finish my assignment, but I saw this. My assignment can wait for 25 minutes!
I remember this game quite well. I still remember my younger self struggling in that pterodactyl segment to the point I nearly just stopped playing. Also didn't like what they did to Scales. Bring him up as the big bad and there isn't hardly a fight with him then a huge difficulty spike with the final boss almost made me stop playing again.
Just started watching you guys and y'all are awesome, love you guys already. Thanks for doing one on this game! Good times.
The entire "It's a good [blank], but not a good (franchise name) [blank]" mentally should really die off already. It's idiotic. No name should demand certain standards or expectations.
Idk, if they made a Zelda game that looked and functioned like a star fox game even if it was amazing it'd still be weird and out of place and I think that's what people mean. Even though this game is officially part of the franchise it doesn't fit the star fox mold at all. If you really like other star fox games that doesn't really tell you if you'll like this game.
Mr. Pokirby I disagree. People play a game for a certain genre or type of game. There would be nothing special about a game series if it did whatever it wants. If a Mario game became a dungeon crawler and was a part of the main series, people would be angry. Especially when that is Zelda’s thing. It is also technically false advertising.
They did make a Zelda game that was like a Star Fox game. Link's Crossbow Training.
They also made a dynasty warriors style game with Hyrule Warriors, Age of Calamity literally being a prequel to BOTW.
Honestly though, long running franchises trying different genres isn't anything new so it's kinda weird that Star Fox Advnetures is always singled out. I don't think this game tricked any Star Fox fans back in the day either. It was pretty upfront as being marketed as an adventure game and not a shooter, no different than Sonic Adventure being an adventure game and not a 2d side scrolling platformer
The completionist is my favorite CZcams channel apart from avgn
Jirard I respect you so much for doing what you do week in and week out. I have just recently discovered your channel and I have fallen in love with your content. I can see the hard work and dedication that goes into the production and completion of the games and I tip my hat to you sir. I know you probably won’t see this but I would like you and your team to know that I appreciate you and look up to your dedication. I wish you the best with all of your opportunities in the future.
Your intro and sound effects sound amazing with some quality headphones on 👍🏾
See, though...here's my counterargument to the whole "It should've just stayed Dinosaur Planet" thing.
I love Star Fox Adventures. And I would have probably never played it if it didn't have the Star Fox brand name on it.
True, I'm not a big fan of slapping a big franchise name onto something completely unrelated. However, sometimes, it's the only way to get a game like this some attention. If it *didn't* have the Star Fox name on it, it would be fated to be an obscure game that nobody had ever heard of. True, the Star Fox elements are shoehorned and don't work all that well...but it's such a tiny part of the game that I don't really care about them anyway. I played for the Star Fox title...and stayed because I loved the core gameplay. And if it weren't for that title, I likely never would have discovered one of my favorite Gamecube games.
same
Digizel the Bui
Nah, a Rare title would've received attention.
Digizel the Bui just like banjo kazooie
Even though I dislike the game, I agree with your points. Unfortunately, people give so many attention to sequels and reboots of known franchises than giving a shot if a new game looks interesting.
I get your point... but you're forgetting that it would've been a RARE TITLE regardless.
Rare were a powerhouse throughout the 90s, an original Rare game wouldn't have "been fated to obscurity" in the slightest. At the time it came out, it AT WORST would've become a cult-classic like Conker.
But I do agree with that last point. If it weren't for the Starfox label, I probably wouldn't have found it right away either. Though as a late-to-the-party Rare fan... (and a dinosaur, zelda, furry, and fantasy/sci-fi fan) I would've eventually found it without a doubt, anyway ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I remeber that I left this game at 99% and never went back to finish it, I did the same with Metroid Prime and Paper Mario TTYD. I don't know what was wrong with me. lol
I was 9 when I got this game. I'm now 25 and can hand-on-heart say that this game brings back possibly my favourite childhood memories.
I loved traversing Snowhorn wastes at night, seeing the white snow against the navy night sky and watching the warm amber glow of the fires.
I loved strolling along the beach and jumping into the "Krystal" clear waters at Cape Claw. The music for that area was out of this world.
I loved Thorntail Hollow and watching the transition from day to night. Again, the music was gorgeous and so unique.
I too got stuck on the button mashing part as a kid. I also struggled with the test of fear. This tormented me as a kid, as I really wanted to unite Fox with Krystal, especially after watching the saxophone scene where Fox sees her at the Krazoa palace.
After accidentally formatting my memory card, and giving up a number of times, StarFox Adventures permeated all through my childhood, giving me magical sensations and memories to carry and think back to for years to come.
It's my guilty pleasure, going onto CZcams, finding Starfox Adventure videos and reading the comments. It's heart warming to see that there are so many like me who appreciated the game, not for what it was meant to be, but for what it was.
You know, Ted seems like a pretty chill dude! He plays the comic relief and does it remarkably well! Keep rocking, Ted, my man.
