    I "thought" I had learned vibrato back "in the day". Took me about a year, but then I discovered that I didn't have control and that I couldn't transfer from finger to finger with consistency, so I have made it a prime goal now to tear down my "old" habits and to rebuild my vibrato. Exercises and videos like this are part of my journey. Thank you.

    Another great vibrato video! I especially appreciated your tour through the Fischer exercises. After having spent at least a year with them, it's been fascinating to see both Nathan Cole's and your take on those exercises (love your image of the "hook", and love Nathan's image of the "wheel" for example, both of which add more nuance to what was already in my thinking.) Also, kudos for your clarity both in description and demonstration -- and for including the ducks!

    • @violynnkuo
      @violynnkuo  Před 3 lety

      Thanks, Rebecca! I'm pretty sure Nathan got the "wheel" image from Simon Fischer, as I watched Simon describe this image in his Zoom video call during Violympics. For me personally, the "wheel" image is the least helpful to me as I can't successfully incorporate this movement into my own vibrato. However I felt it was important to include this exercise.
      And yes, the ducks likely have better vibrato after that day! 😆

    One question:
    I can do vibrato easily on E, A, and D strings, but on the G string is quite difficult. Also, my first finger is very stiff, can you give any tips on how to loosen it?

    • @violynnkuo
      @violynnkuo  Před rokem

      You may need to adjust your elbow/arm to give more clearance for your fingers. Hard to know without seeing.
      And for first finger, try encouraging flexibility in the distal joint, which you can practice away from the instrument by touching the index finger to the thumb and doing the Knuckle Collapse exercise.
      Good luck!

    • @violynnkuo
      @violynnkuo  Před rokem +1

      Very true.
      However, from what I’ve seen with students is that they have uniquely incorrect movement patterns.
      Meaning, that it’s necessary to pinpoint the exact issues and prescribe the specific exercise(s) to remedy whatever component of vibrato they’re struggling with.
      For example, just a few days ago, I was working with one of my students, a professional orchestral violinist with a titled chair position. He wanted to work specifically on “wrist”-based vibrato.
      His vibrato was already beautiful and under his control, however, he wanted to further expand his colour palette and vibrato range.
      I prescribed the “Knuckle Collapse” and “Wash the String” exercises so we could go further into the intimate vibrato colours he was seeking.

    Wonderful video, thank you for making this! I like the mention of the vertical component of the vibrato. I saw somewhere that Henryk Szeryng had mentioned that also. It seems important. One thing I have found looking at vibrato videos is that some of the people don’t make a vibrato that I want, or don’t even show that they can, but your Sibelius 2nd movement excerpt from Facebook, was exactly how I like it, in my case translating it to something that would be beautiful on the viola. I tried, for example, playing and recording for myself the Wienawski slow movement on the violin this fall, and then the first half of the movement on the viola. Nobody was around, fortunately! This seems like a crime against music, but I think we should be able to sound like a violin or a cello, and then if we’re particularly drowned out in a quartet or something then we can choose to let loose with a “viola” vibrato, but in something like a Brahms viola sonata I would happily steal Pinchas Zukerman’s technique and sound, if that were possible. Please keep doing videos like this! You will raise the level of playing even higher than it is now, which is already way higher than when I was taking auditions!

      I’m only hoping to make a decent sound on something, preferably the viola, since that’s what my job is! I’m always surprised by the different uses that we really need, like short notes with the connected vibrato, longer notes that I often find myself overdoing, last notes of phrases that seem to need a bit of speed. I’ve been using an app which is helping me see the vibrato I’m using, adding the visual element is helpful for me. Thank you for doing this!

      I’m using VocalPitchMonitor but there are plenty of apps that do the same thing. I would mess with the parameters like horizontal and vertical zoom and scrolling speed to make it behave and not freak out when the heat comes on. Then feed in vibrato that you like to see what it looks like and how it compares with what you’re doing! I do my morning exercises with it. We have to see if it helps, it has only been a couple of months. Of course the ear is the final verdict, but it’s another helpful thing to keep me on task. Unfortunately it doesn’t help with the rest of my problems. We need other apps for those!

      Do you mean Simon Fischer’s last vibrato exercise, which I call ‘The Wheel’?

  • @AndreaMarchhartChannelmedium

    Dear Lynn, Your explanation and demonstration is very very helpful for me.
    I am an adult beginner, knowing left hand techniques from classical guitar studies. But..... violin is different.... 😇
    So i want to have a nice tone, be able to play expressive.
    On first sight my favourite exercise is the "washing", to be as flexible as possible. And the last one, the imaginatiin of a circle.
    The one with "hanging" the hand (where You used the cloth) seems also very helpful to stay loose.
    My experience is : if i want to vibrate too expressive, not having good technique yet, there is big danger to make it hard and strong, and the whole violin starts shaking 😂😂😂
    so better do this exercises patiently, first....
    thank You very much for Your effort to really help!!!!

    Thank you for the detailed explanation and various exercises to help with vibrato. When I practice the fingertip roll / knuckle collapse, at the point of more pressure i.e. the knuckles is at 90 degrees, my fingernail will touch the fingerboard, even though I've cut my fingernails extremely short. Basically, I can't press the string with my fingertip as there isn't enough flesh and my fingernails are very far out to the edge of my fingertip. When the fingernail is touching the fingerboard, I can't fully press the string against the fingerboard. Do you have any tips / workaround for me to resolve this issue?

    • @violynnkuo
      @violynnkuo  Před 5 měsíci +1

      You’re welcome!
      Do try to avoid the nail touching the string. I’d say (without seeing with my own eyes) that just try to get the widest range of motion that makes sense for your finger morphology.
      Everyone is built differently and has different hand/finger proportions.

    My violin still shakes as I learn vibrato. It's improving, but it's not stable like yours.
    Any advice to students about how to prevent instrument shake during vibrato?
    I use a Kun shoulder rest and that helps.
    I wonder if I'm pressing too hard on the string.

    • @violynnkuo
      @violynnkuo  Před 3 lety +2

      Without seeing what’s going on, it’s hard for me to say, however if the instrument is shaking along with your left hand, it does sound like the instrument is not stabilized and/or the left hand is gripping the neck too tightly or incorrectly.
      When you vibrate, you release the contact point of the base of the index finger so that only the thumb and the head/collar bone are the points of contact for the instrument.
      Instrument shaking indicates to me that there might still be the third contact point of the side of the index finger and your instrument is shaking along with your finger oscillations.
      Difficult for me to say but that’s my best guess.
      And I guess you’ve seen my other vibrato tutorial: Top 5 Vibrato Mistakes?
      It might be that your left hand is too tight.

      Thanks for watching, Bishal!
      It's difficult for me to discern what is going on for you without seeing you play. What you may perceive to be a thumb issue could be an issue elsewhere in your setup or posture, or left hand positioning.
      I know that for my hand, I often need to slide the thumb more *underneath* the neck to facilitate a wider vibrato. If I attempt to vibrate with my thumb to "high", I don't get much range of motion and it does not sound good.
      Hope that helps!

    • @violynnkuo
      @violynnkuo  Před 2 lety +2

      Thanks for watching my video!
      I don’t advise trying to solely train for a “wrist” vibrato or “arm” vibrato.
      Trying to train for just one or the other locks you into a limited vibrato pattern.
      Instead, training to build a range of motion that enables freedom of *all* the joints in the entire arm structure (all the way to the shoulder blades and back), will not only give you more physical freedom in your vibrato technique but will also give you a wider range of colours and movement patterns to choose from.
      You may eventually develop a signature vibrato pattern that resembles more of an “arm” or “wrist” vibrato however, with that said, I do advocate for doing exercises that train general flexibility and proper range of motion in *all* the joints (from fingers, wrist, elbow, shoulder socket, and even the collar bone).
      Basically, do the exercises not with the intention of building an “arm” vibrato or a “wrist” but do the exercises to build range of motion, proper movement pattern, flexibility in all joints, speed, consistency, and pitch accuracy.
      Good luck!

      @violynnkuo  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Hi Jessenia, there is no one answer because every single person is different, unique and with their own strengths, challenges, and influences.
      My advice is to discuss it with your teacher because I’m assuming they haven’t introduced vibrato exercises yet for a reason?
      What I have seen is people attempting to learn vibrato on their own and developing very incorrect habits… which can take you even LONGER to unlearn.
      You end up doing more harm to your technique and sound than good.
      So I advise you to ask your teacher what is best because they are working with you directly.
      Good luck!
