  • This week, we are talking about a much requested subject...vibrato. It’s not surprising there have been so many questions and comments about it as vibrato is one of the most tricky things for string players to develop. Learning and building the fundamentals of this technique early on can be challenging.
So, why is it so important? This video takes you on an exploration of the different ways vibrato can be played and will leave you with some exercises to help develop the basic vibrato movements. Whether you’ve been doing vibrato for 2 months or 2 years, these exercises are great - I still use them today!
Join in live or online with the Benedetti Foundation at www.benedettif...
The videos have been generously supported by ESTA UK, MiSST - The Andrew Lloyd Webber Programme, and Oasby Music Group and I am very grateful for their support.
Huge thanks to our media partners Classic FM, The Strad, The Violin Channel and WQXR who will be sharing the videos with their audiences each week when released.
Finally, these videos wouldn’t have been possible without an amazing team: Scott Jaeger, our film maker, Laura Gardiner, our Education Manager, Rebecca Driver, PR Manager and Hannah King, Online Media Manager. I want to say a huge thank you to all four of them for being with me on this journey.

@@lucys1016 I practice all the vibrato exercises for about 15 min in total, I pretty much follow along with the video and pause it to make sure I'm doing it correctly. It helps a lot to focus on 3rd finger, get the motion there, and soon 2nd finger will follow along, then 1st and 4th finger. Keep up the good work, be patient, never never never give up!!

Love your teaching; I'm a pianist, not a violinist, and am 72 years of age. I'm still learning and to me THE most essential part of great music is the touch; for instance a 1maj7 is much more melodic and beautiful if the 7th is not played to loudly.

This method has been extremely helpful in order to move the wrist in the way that you do. I am adopting her system only because I understand it better and it truly allows my wrist to mimmick yours. Hi Nicky, I managed to do a vibrato yesterday on all 4 fingers for the first time and to be honest, I was expecting the sound of a pneumatic drill but got the complete opposite😁. It was a fast and narrow vibrato where my left hand and fingers were relaxed. The only lessons I had was for Bb clarinet!

It is impossible to speak or sing without vibrato. It is a natural part of the human voice. It activates the human ear and creates interest in communication. Vibrato reduces the feeling of space between the voice and the listener.

I CURRENTLY DONT USE A SHOULDER OR CHIN REST, BUT TO ANY BEGINING VIBRATO ENTHUSIAST, I WOULD HEARTILY RECOMMEND BOTH CHIN AND SHOULDER RESTS SO YOU DONT CHOKE THE VIOLIN NECK, AND IF COMFORTABLE THE RESTS WILL ENABLE YOUR HANDS TO FLY. PLUS YOU WONT WORRIE AS MUCH ABOUT DROPPING THE VIOLIN. I MAY IF I FIND ONE BUY A LIBERO SHOULDER REST. BUT REMEMBER, ANYTHING THAT ATTCHES TO THE VIOLIN TENDS TO DAMPEN THE TONE. BEFOR 1850, THERE WERE NO CHIN RESTS! GET SOME EVA PIRAZZIS, IF YOU DONT ALREADY AND THEN TRY VIBRATO! YOUR FINGERS WILL BE MUCH MORE COMFORTABLE. GET THAT BRIDGE AS LOW AS YOU CAN, MAYBE SAVE THE OLD AS IS AND PUT ON A NEW LOWER HEIGHT BRIDGE. I CERTAINLY AM GLAD I GOT INTO BRIDGE CARVING!, I NOW MAKE MY VERY OWN CUSTOM BRIDGES. WATCH THE DAVIDE SOLA IN CREMONA B R IGE CARVING START TO FINISH, AND YOU WILL LEARN HOW VITAL THE BRIDGE IS TO THE SOUND AND ENJOYMENT OF THE VIOLIN. SINCERELY CHRIS E. USA. HAPPY VIBRATO!😂

IVE HAD TO CLEAN MY EVA PIRAZZIS, THE HIGH E WAS LOOKING RUSTED, SO I USED A DROP OF EUCALYPTUS OIL ON A COFFEE FILTER AND GENTLY SWABBED THE OLD ROSIN AWAY. I THEN PROCEEDED TO play my rendition of abbas the visitors. IM AMAZED, MY INSTRUMENT IS NOW A SONG BIRD WITH THESE EVA PIRAZZIS. THEVE BEEN ON MY VIOLIN 3 OR 4 DAYS NOW AND THE WAXY FEEL HAS GONE, I MAY HAVE RUINED THEM BUT THEY SEEM TO MATCH ABBA OVERTONES CONSONANTS AND VOWELS AND REMARKABLY SMOOTH! THANK YOU AGAIN! NIKKI ,I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR STRINGS LIKE THIS FOR A LONG TIME., BUT JUST DIDNT KNOW HOW GOOD THEY COULD BE. THEY ARE SO SENSITIVE, THAT THE CLEANING PAPER STRUMMED SEVERAL OCTAVES. ITS WILD, ITS UNCANNY! NO WONDER POBABLY MORE MUSICIANS USE EVA PIRAZZI THAN ANY OTHER VIOLIN STRING? THAT MAY BE EXAGERATED BUT I THINK IT MIGHT NOT BE TOO FAR FROM THE TRUTH. MY NEXT BIG CONQUEST? GAMMA GUT! SO I CAN WOLLOW IN BAROQUE. THANK YOU AGAIN NIKKI! YOUVE MADE ME A VIOLINIST! AND AS LEO. HOURBACH 16:1said it must sing! But he wasn't about to tell me how. Then I picked it up for a country rock band, then set it down for another 15 years. I picked it up again 15 years ago playing in another pop-rock group but only played part-time as the guitar was more necessary. Now I am 66 retired and finally trying to learn vibrato having never done it before. So take heart friend there is at least one more senior trying to do a difficult thing. I just found your video and am hoping it will come to me with your help. Thank you for this tutorial. :)

You are such a wonderful teacher! Thank you, for your detailed explanations, and progression of exercises. My confidence is already building. I almost fell off my chair, when I saw how flexible your fingers are! I doubt I could ever be that loose, so thank you, for instilling confidence, by pointing out each will develop their own unique style. Every tutorial I have watched before, had me tensing up because they were so rigid with the technique, and I am finding vibrato, is the most awkward thing to do.🦋 PS: I love the gold touches on your pegs! They are so elegant and unique! Wishing you all the best, with all in life, and thank you once again, for such a wonderful video. I look forward to watching your other videos as well.

Hi Nicola! Im in it for the long haul. I intend to master vibrato. My fourth grade violin teacher balked at teaching us vibrato because he thought it was overdone. I still wanted to grasp vibrato because I thoght it was beautiful. Ive waited 40 years to be allowed to be instructed in vibrato technique. Even abba had vibrato in one of their songs called Hey hey hey hellen. It was a doupleted A
At moderato pace, back the way up the way back the way up the way. Imsure it was an overdoub, but none the less it is there. Summoning and eery ... "yes you do!A a a a hey hey hey he hellen! Etc. Im quite familiar with it. Thats why I would like to master vibrato. Not that I would ever nesessarily master it, but advance in understanding vibrato. If i have to go at a snails pace I will learn vibrato, by hook or by crook! Thst is my task. That is what I want to do. To borrow from Ohysicist William F. FRY.

Dear Nicky! Hello again from southern Oregon! 5 14 24 chris e. Nicky have been working on The Visitors by abba. Discovered they were at A=441, not 438 or 440. I'm so thrilled to tell you I believe I am matching the notes as well as slurry used on the bottom G. Hope your well, I've been down with kidney stones and after a long day of convalescent I pulled out my practice violin. I'm really really psyched! It's sounding nice and buttery to my ears. Your loyal struggling student in U.S.A.❤xxx

Hi Nicky! 8 20 24. C.e.from usa. Worked on the visitors by abba. I skipped the vibrato exercise and focused on listening to the beat. My bow needs cleaning and inthe.cooler weather doesn't grab the strings as well. I'm blowing F# behind the bridge at D string so my intonation must be close! I think it sounds great! I'm amazed a student instrument sounds so mellow! I have of course modified my bridge. All for now.😅

7 24 24 Hi Nicola. I have been down with bacterial infection in my right jaw, so have not played much over last several days. I picked the violin up a few minutes ago and ran through the vibrato exercises with you on vidio. Sounded pretty good. Yesterday I drew your hands on scraps of paper at the county library. Im anxious to resume lessons again. Brain has been on fog from bad tap water so Im on antibiotics and feeling a little better now. Well enough to get practicing again. Great lesson and I agree, more is not more! So i have been brief here with my lesson. Hope your in good health and enjoying summer! Bye for now. Your usa loyal, c.e.😅

Hi, Nikki, from Chris e. In usa,USA, bad day yesterday, both violins dehydrated. Today great! Got my instruments rehydrate, sound, fantastic!. I played " The mouse waltz" It was something I made up from from Allegro. I am very happy with these strings, the Evas, they are meeting my expectations! There is a smoothness an almost silky glide that seems to lack in other strings.Have a wonderful day. I think I'm a late bloomer, I got involved with oil painting, and instead I missed my calling

Hi Nicky, spent morning reviewing the drinking glass mechanics of vibrato.holding the glass in reverse is vibrato. Spent late afternoon listening to sonny and cherr the beat goes on. According to Sonny he wrote it himself. I think It will become a classic! So I did the best I could to mimmick the song on my violin. It was OK. Didn't move me like there version but I felt inspired. I also am tinkering with my bows to incurred tonal bliss. Then after dinner I watched the slow motion Menuhin vibrato vidios I like Kogan and that French guy. I've noticed Pinkus Zukerman seems to have a hand pattern similar to yours. ERGO THE THIRD FINGER ASSIST TO THE FOURTH AND THE FINGER GROUPINGS ETC. I THINK I DID WELL TO UNDERSTAND THE WATERGLASS TRICK. I THOUGHT IT WAS THE PALM THAT PIVOTED BUT IT LOOKS LIKE THE REAL ROTATION COMES FROM THUMB. THE REST OF THE TIME ITS THE FINGER JOINTS. WELL THATS HOW I OBSERVED IT. LONG DAY, RETIRING FOR THE EVENING. JUST WANTED YOU TO KNOW I WAS PRACTICING. IM SO PROUD OF MYSELF. BYE FOR NOW. 12 5 2023 838PM.

HI, NICOLA!, ITS BEEN A LONG HARROWING DAY FOR ME. THIS MORNING I WATCHED audio about how to remove the collar. Around the end button in order to screen out wolf tones or notes. So I did just that. I ONLY PLAYED A SHORT WHILE, BUT SO FAR I THINK I HEAR AN PROVEMENT. THERE SEEMS TO BE A BETTER RESPONCE ON THE UP BOW. THE TONE SEEMS MORE PURE! I PLAYED SOME INNAUGURAL MUSIC JUST NOW, AND WHILE NOT IN TUNE AT LEAST I COULD RECOGNIZE HAIL TO THE CHIEF!. THATS ALL, I JUST WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW IM STILL PRACTICING, AND WILL BE TRYING AGAIN TO MASTER VIBRATO. I NEED TO WIPE DOWN MY STUDENT INSTRUMENT IT HAS ACCUMULATED ROSIN UNDER THE STRINGS! Nicola, this is a really good video, and an excellent reminder of all the important aspects of the technique, and how to practise it well.
I've been playing for many years, and had a teacher, a professional like yourself, but that was so many years ago, and I do notice I
have let quite a few things slip.
Your video series is an excellent reminder of how to keep on top of the important bits.
Id just like to leave you with this little bit of Scots humour from me : good vibrato = polonaise, bad vibrato = mayonnaise :)
Thanks again for all your kindness!
