    I don't think I've used anything that was so convoluted and confusing to set up in the past 10 years. How about a plug-and-play like any other product on the market? Having to enter MAC addresses etc?
    When I choose the RAPT wifi connection it disconnects my home wifi from that device, requiring you to be signed in on two devices at the same time. When I try logging into my RAPT account, it doesn't recognize my password so I've had to reset that three times already.
    VERY FRUSTRATING to set up! I can only hope that it is easier to use than to set up!

    First time user of the PIll yesterday, and I have to say user friendliness is not a feature of the RAPT Pill. The instructions for the registration process and actually getting it to work on the RAPT portal are not clear at all - it would be much better to ship it with some clear written instructions. I also suggest an IOS/Android app would be somewhat better for non tech savvy users. After finally getting the Pill's firmware updated, working and calibrated it was reading 1.000 in water and 1.075 in wort that measured 1.063 on both a refractometer and a Tilt. Ended up removing the Pill from the brew and will try again next time but not exactly a stellar experience.

I mentioned on a previous KL video about digital beer tap handles, displaying images and info on a lcd display handle, it would cool if you could make a Rapt lcd tap handle, automatically grabbing information from the pill and other profiles, to seamlessly create a digital display showing abv, ibus colour ect ect.

      We have been considering tap handles but the powering a screen is the difficult part. It becomes a bit messy to have cables running to a tap handle and if we do not use cables the only screen that is low enough power to be used with batter is the eink. The eink screens are quite expensive.

    Just bought one and although i haven't set it up yet (i will be soon) i have a few ideas for the next revision or model, 1st would be to have the USB charger port inline with the board, instead of sticking out, this could be a potential point of failure, it could break off the board if the unit gets knocked while being charged, 2nd would be a proper on/off switch, would be good for those who don't do constant brews and could prolong the life of the battery.

    • @KegLand
      @KegLand  Před 2 lety +2

      Thanks for the feedback. We were a bit concerned about the reliability of the micro switch as small switches and reduce the reliability of the device. Also in the firmware you can just put the tilt horizontally and this will put the tilt into sleep mode. When in sleep mode the drain in battery will be extremly slow and a full battery would only draw about 0.05% per year of charge. With that said the much more sigificant factor is all 18650 batteries just discharge on their own at a rate of 1-2% per annum. So if if we did install a switch the battery would still discharge and the difference between sleep mode and turning the battery off completely would be negligible.
      Either way, in sleep mode the battery will last many years. So the main thing to remember is jus tto store horizontally.

  • @Quinny1394
    @Quinny1394 Před 2 lety +3

    Hi, just thought I would throw in my two cents, 18650, along with 20700, 21700 and 26650, 18 being the circumference and 650 being the length, these are lithium ion rechargeable batteries, best not charged thru the board but charged thru an external battery charger (they are usualy one size fits all), I know this from years of experience with these batteries from vaping. They also use them in series in tesla EVs. Continuous charging thru the board will cause problems with the battery holding charge and performance, very crucial in the use of a hydrometer, you don't want false readings and it to go flat mid fermentation, but its more noticeable in vaping where you are maxing out the battery all the time just about where with this usage it is just powering a board, I don't know alot about these hydrometers, how long does it last before having to recharge it? Anyways cheers.. looking forward to seeing the brewzilla gen 4!

    • @KegLand
      @KegLand  Před 2 lety +2

      I would mostly agree with you but just on the first charge the pin on the microchip is essentially calibrating with the battery so it can determine what 100% charge is. So for the first charge we would recommend a good long 24hr charge and then once you have done this you can use your external charger if you want.
      We have included a charge control on the board so really I dont think it's necessary to charge in a separate controller but if you wanted to do that it's fine too.

    It looks like a good quality product. Although the the 5th order polynomial does not make sense. I have plotted data with similar devices (iSpindel and my own esp32 iTilt). It is very clear that te correct theoretical relation is a polynomial of order 3. The physical design of this device with the double O rings and no place for bubbles to stick is appealing. The price look very affordable comparing other commercial and diy products.

    • @KegLand
      @KegLand  Před 2 lety

      Yes the 5th Order polynomial is probably not necessary and to be quite honest I mainly use the simply calibration which is accurate enough anyway so I think the more complex methods of calibration are really only thre for people who like getting into the technical aspects of this device or are using the device outsite of it's normal function. Hope you enjoy using the product. We have been having a difficult time manufacturing them fast enough at the moment.

    What's the temperature limit for the pill? Something that really bothers me on brew day is having to make sure my wort is properly mixed, take a sample, cool the sample down to 20c, and use my 'best judgement' of a hydrometer reading to get my gravity figures.
    would the pill and housing be able to handle temperatures up to boiling, so I can just drop one of these in the kettle for my pre and post boil gravity readings?

    • @KegLand
      @KegLand  Před 2 lety +2

      The housing is made from nylon 12 and POK which can handle an autoclave so this would be fine. The board itself would also be able to handle 100C. Really the only issue would be the battery. The batteries that we use are only rated to 75C.

    When might we get some early info on upcoming products? I'm very interested in a "half size" fermentation chamber for my 30l all-rounder and would be happy to be a beta tester for that!

      The half sized fermzilla is something we discussed in the meeting today. We have a new Fermzilla Gen 3 that is going to get finished first and once this is released we will then start working on this smaller sized fermzilla.
      For the RAPT boilers this has other advantages. For instance as our RAPT products can receive BLE beacons from other BLE devices what we can do is pickup on several different temperatures so that we can brew smarter. For instance if we are mashing we can have a BLE probe in the middle of he mash/malt pipe and use this temperature to determine when to turn the heating on or off. We can also put a temp prove in the distillation head and in the coolant water so we can better control the distillation process.

      Krausen definitely can cause issues with all of these devices. If you have a clear fermenter like the FermZilla you can easily see this when it happens and give the whole fermenter a shake. If you shake your fermenter it breaks up the krausen and dry hops and this greatly improves the results. It also tends to wash off the lumps off the side wall of the fermenter and off the pill and makes the chunks settle down to the bottom of the fermenter. I am a fan of shaking to be honest. As long as I do not have oxygen in the head space I have no issue with shaking the fermenter.

      We only have one model which can do bluetooth or wifi and you go into the settings to choose which one you are going to use.
      The telemetry frequency is 30min by default but you can change this to what you like in the settings. For checking gravity if you reduce the telemetry frequency to 6hrs the battery will last way longer. I should have mentioned that in the video. For gravity checking its not that useful to be checking more than every 6hrs anyway.

      If there is any chance that you have unplugged the cable while it was doing an update to the firmware then you might find it will have a corrupt firmware version. @kegland If you are reading comments, here are few from a person who works in software development landscape. I bought your RAPT pill one week ago and here is my findings so far:
    Starting to use the rapt pill can be VERY confusing for the end-user, since nothing will appear on the APP section until the very first telemetry is sent out. This is not mentioned anywhere, not in this video or anywhere where normal end-user would start digging from. My suggestion is that your first telemetry sending should not wait for that initial 60 minutes, instead the very first one should be sent immediately when a new profile is started. Other option is to highlight this VERY clearly that user can manually send the telemetry when "testing" the device. I ended up adding / removing / resetting the device multiple times until I understood that there is this telemetry functionality in the rapt pill diagnostics page.
    Other very user friendly feature would be.. again related to this telemetry, that when user starts calibration process, that during calibration process, you send telemetry for example every 30 seconds as an "built in" functionality. This would be nice kind of automated process also for the end user to see from the APP that the device is actually working correctly and can see that the dashboard is showing data.
    You also have a lot of "naming conventions" that are incorrect. Example.. in the user interface of the APP you have "Verification code" and in the Rapt pill you use "User code" ... So these kind of very simple things can be confusing for people who are not so technical.
    Just my few cents for you guys.

      It's cheaper just to purchase the RAPT Temp controller box and use this as the bluetooth bridge. I mean we could make some software that would enable you to use the PI but we have not had many requests for this yet. The brewfather integration is almost finished and should be live soon.

    how do they handle with heavily dry hopped beers?

    • @KegLand
      @KegLand  Před 2 lety

      Withing about 24hr of when the dry hops are added this effects the results. With that said once the hops fall to the bottom of the fermenter the problem solves itself after 1-2 days. We have noticed if you shake the fermenter this breaks up the floating hops and makes them fall down to the bottom of the fermenter faster so this does help the situation.

    Hey, can this device be used in a wort that is sitting at 60-70 degrees C?

      Hi John, it seems to be an unanswerable question, too difficult to answer. Please would you give the kegland team and easier question to answer?

      the housing and circuit board will be fine and these can easily handle boiling water. the only issue is the 18650 battery. As you get hotter the battery will degrade faster. At 60-70C you can expect the Li-Ion battery to only last a couple hundred charge cycles rather than a couple thousand. So provided you are prepared to replace your battery more frequently it will be fine.

      Yes this integration is almost finished. I think the brewfather integration should be working next week.

    Can you use this under pressure?

    • @KegLand
      @KegLand  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes absoltely. We have done testing up to 8 bar and it works fine. When under pressure the main thing to be aware of is that when CO2 dissolves into the solution this changes the gravity of the liquid so you have to keep that in mind when looking at the readins. It's only a small factor but it's important that you are aware of this when using the Pill under pressure.

    The fact that this *doesn't* fit in a standard glass carboy breaks my heart :'( What I would give for someone to design something that did...

      What, you are still using glass? I thought that glass went out years ago. Get a FermZilla all rounder!
