CheetahGirl117 Your teacher and I are gonna have to have a little talk. ;)

One of the main reasons I enjoyed this video is because of you reading out loud those onomatopoeia's.
I found this video very interesting!
I'm just a comic reader, I don't draw myself, but learning these things through your videos makes me a more attentive reader, I notice things I probably wouldn't have noticed otherwise.
Thanks Momo!
markcrilley I learned lot from your videos now im thinking of making my own graphic novel
InfamousNinjaV when you do tell me please
Great video, Mark! I was watching your video with headphones on and at the beginning I thought that was my doorbell going off and I ran to see who it was. My wife was starting at me like I was a crazy person!
Ha! Sorry for tricking you. :)
Small price to pay for such an excellent and informative series!
Truth be told, I've never really thought about the sound effects when reading manga. I found this video quite interesting and I myself have much more appreciation for said sound effects :P
Thanks!
Mark... Please... Make a tutorial about rain, characters in rain and getting soaked, raindrops dripping down their face and hands, and how to shade wet clothing. This is my number one problem because I like to draw rain. Somewhat ironic.
I agree
My intro has rain
This really helped me. Usually I just go kind of stereotypical with 'flip' or 'click' or 'slam'
With the huge crash from Miki Falls, in my head, I saw and heard lots of sound affects already, that the crash was just played out in my head, without having to see any words

You're absolutely my favorite teacher! Anything about manga and anime I can find easily from you! I appreciate your dedication to making your videos, it really helps me with my drawing!!
Awesome tips, Mark Sensei!
This reminds me of the manga/anime Bakuman. when Niizuma Eiji made a chapter of his manga with no words only the art and sound effects. It's like the sounds effects are part of the art and not the story.
Love that manga
It's Eiji Nizuma not Nizuma Eiji and
Niizuma, Eiji
Scott Frederick No, you say your last name first, then your name, so Niizuma Eiji is right
oh. they call him that in the manga a couple times now that I look back
Its great to have videos about other things in manga/comic books other than how to draw videos. This kind of advice is crucial for many of us beginners. No need to apologize, thank you very much!
It's good that you use your own finished comics to teach lessons like this one. Thanks for sharing.
Mr Crilley, don't ever apologize for not making a certain type of video. We enjoy ANY kind of video you make because there is always something interesting in all of them. Keep them coming! :D
Thank you FaynaMadrid! :)
Man mark, pumping out all the useful videos recently! Thank youuu!
Thanks for this! I'm an illustration student in college and we sometimes get comic assignments. My style isn't manga at all, but all your videos still help me loads!
FRESH NEW PERFECT OPENING!!!!!LOVE IT
This video's long overdue Mark!
This was a BIG help !! Thanks!!
Great video!!! Thank you for making me understand how to interpret the sound effect from the comics. Your video is a guide for both artists and readers of comics or manga.
Mark thank you so much for making these videos i really, really appreciate you making these "how to make comics/ graphic novels" believe me it really helps! ;)
+Shelley Brodeur Thank you Shelley ^^
It made my day when i saw you uploaded. My mom passed 2 days and drawing is something that can take my mind off of anything.
Don't apologise! I really needed this, thank you Mark!
8:42 most annoying sound i have ever heard XD
Love the introduction Mark!
thank you mark, helped a lot as always
Thank you for this! I've been struggling a bit with sound effects and these tips are definitely things I will consider! :D
You are sooooooo good at drawing mike, I read all your books!
Thanks Mark I needed this :)
I think these kind of videos are more interesting because it gives us the insights and the behind the scene process of making your own comic/manga. And I am more into these kinds of stuff as I am in the phase of making my own very first comic. Hope I could use the tips you have mentioned in my comic book.
YES new video!
Thankyou for sharing this! I wanted to draw an illustration in comic style and I wanted to show a large bell sound. This helps so much!
Hey Mark, I want to thank you for coming to my school once again! :) Just for the other people out there who are trying to get Mark to their school, it is possible and it will most likely be difficult but it's possible. Again, thanks Mark!
Genius sound effects style.
At my secondary school in London, I saw some of your manga books in the graphic novel section of the library. A group of guys were reading them too
Psycho Head Yay! Thanks for letting me know. :)
I realley Like these kind of videos. Talking about the design is every bit as important as the drawing tecnique, so I realley would encourage you to keep up with these too. Amazing work! Congratz.
Mark i have to say that i love this kind of videos you make and i think that you should upload more and more TIPS videos.
Anyway I love to watch all your videos ~!
Be sure to keep doing the good work you have been doing for years.
Thanks SuperKz!
Again an helpfull and awesome Video you did, Mark sensei ^^
Hey Mark I'm currently making my own manga and drawing for someone elses manga, and you have been a real imspiration and help, so just wanna say thanks!
Thank you! This is very useful video!
Crilley, you are the best, as always)
This video was very helpful, looking forward to the next video.
Really kickass insights, thank you! This is super useful information.
in japan those sound effects are actually commonly used in real life. Not often and not many, but sometimes. Like "guru guru" is a rolling sound for example.
This is exactly what I needed thank you so much
thanks for great advices really love your videos
FINALLY! :3 I've been waiting for this! By the way, I owe you a huge "THANK YOU" because you cannot imagine how much you helped me for my exam I had today! Thanks again! You rock! ^_^
You're very welcome!
I find these types of videos just as informative as your how-to-draw videos!
Thank you mark!!! I've been making a detailed wolf comic for a while and now I have sound effects for my fight scenes and funny moments 😃 thanks again!!
-Irulan-
this was very helpful info XD also i just wanted to say Mark my school had ALL the miki falls books in the library so i was able to finish reading them all and the story in em was AMAZING in my opinion XD
Thanks! ^_^
thanks a lot Mark, very useful
your font sound effects look digitally added, thats amazing!
This is a great video. I love your comic book videos, theyre super helpful. I have a question, have you already planned out another manga series for when you're finished with your current series? Hoping you continue to make mangas, you're a great writer.
This vid gave me some really great tips for my manga I am trying to make! I like your idea of creating your own words instead of using general english words. Keep up the good work Mark :).
Some very good tips, many I wouldn't have thought
That's exactly the one star wars collection I have on my shelf. Absolutely love the Darth Nihilus story
great tips as always
Good video mark!!!!
I love your videos mark, they have really helped me as an artist. Could you make a video on different angles to draw a character from, I have been struggling with this lately.
You're seriously so super talented.
Mark, you have really inspired me. You are one of my favourites artist in the whole entire world! I want to thank you for your time making videos teaching us new artist the basic techniques in art. Your videos have been really a lot of help to me specially to my art projects. Thank you Mark! I will always be #1 fan!
Thanks so much Mark!
Two Mark(s) one conversation
I don't normally draw people, but i have found good use in your drawing and comic book videos. I am currently trying to create main characters for my first comic *just for fun* about wolves, this is a lot easier thanks to your drawing and comic videos. Drawing videos have helped me remember a couple of important steps to drawing, and have helped me a lot on the eyes. Comic videos have helped me know the best layouts and "sound effects". Also they have helped me know to write a script and sloppy copy sketches *Thumbnail sketch* and have remembered to outline my sketch in ink pen. Basically, Your videos are a lot of help :P And I don't read much comics myself, but i plan on buying one of yours, since i can get so many examples :D
So, while making my comic, i found it kind of hard to choose what sounds i should use and where, and this video really helped! Thank you so much man!
Thanks Mark, that was truly helpful. I also managed to get another one of my questions answered by watching this regarding how to show someone sitting up or turning quickly. Cool!!
You don't need to apologize for not making 'How to Draw' videos. I find this type of informative video to be just as, if not more, useful.
Wonderful, amazing, ect. To many words to decribe you and your art work. Thanks for the tips, it really helped for this project I'm working on.
I'm actually developing a manga myself and this has helped me a lot Thankies!!
Hey,Mark! Thank you a lot for uploading this video,it was very usefull! ;)
thanks mark that was very useful
Gosh this helped wayyyy more than I expected thanks again Mark
Japanese comic when translated to English do sometimes tell you what the sound effect is. A lot of Japanese comics as he pointed out have sound effects for heartbeat and things you wouldn't necessarily think about. One manga I read had the sound effect "ga" and it was translated as "grab" instead of an actual sound. And then there was "Zaaa" translated as "leap" and another was "gu" for "strain". If your going for a Japanese comic aka manga style and sound effects, look out for those.
I have all the 5 Books from 'Brody's Ghost', and i love them so much! Great work Mark! Keep it up! Also thank you for all the helpfull vids! c:
Thanks so much Myrea!
markcrilley No problem Mark c: !
Awesome topic, Mark!I'm such a reading nerd that the first thing that popped in my head was *ONOMATOPOEIA*.That goes to show your favorite subject can make you crazy about it.xI'm glad ya made the video!I REALLY needed help on sound effects. xD
I NEED TO BUY ONE OF YOUR BOOKS LIKE RIGHT NOW
^_^ Thanks!
CRILLEY, you need a Draw My Life :D
I have worked for several Japanese based companies and have gotten to know quite a few people from Japan over the years and I have noticed before this, that they tend to use quite a bit of sound effects when describing different things or just in conversation in general. I just figured it was to help get the idea or point across from English being a secondary or I need to learn some for when I go to the US. I never noticed it near as much working with Germans or Mexicans.
good advice sir! I'll be sure to keep that in mind.
Thanks for the advice mark, I definitely think that using onomatopoeia instead of actual words does a much better job of conveying the true sound of something.
i love the comparision between the japanese and american manga. im on making my manga too and so far i havent added any sound effects after watching this video i do think that sound effects are nessesary and bring the reader into the story so thanks for the advice :)
I notice my english teacher bought your book (Brody's ghost) and we are working on comic strips, she used them books as examples for speech bubbles.
That's great! I'll wait for it then :)
Thanks! I am not very good at this kind of stuff and it really helped!
i really love your art mark.your an amazing artist!and telling us tips such as how to ad sound effects really helps us.so again amazing art amazing tips and amazing style.if you dont mind me having a sujestion im a skater and im also an artist but im kinda shitty at drawing skateboards so could you do a video of how to draw one?it would really help me out.
7:47 I have a scene almost EXACTLY like that. I took your advice about making my own word. At first I thought I would use the standard swoosh, then I thought shoosh but it seemed to much like shush. So I went with shwoosh. Lol
Thank you it really did help me with my comics i guess maby itl clearify my storys more i hope
9:00 what a beautiful truck!
Before mark there really wasn't an american artist that emulated the manga style that I actually enjoyed. It's very humbling that he takes the time to upload a quality video every week on top of his other obligations for his fans. Even if the video title doesn't really interest me at first it never fails to teach me something knew and in the end I'm enamored with it. Thanks for all you've done mr. Crilley, you're awesome sir.
Thanks so much, liquidmetal! I really appreciate your support and your kind words :)
Wait a second. That dude was Brody? Bruh. Mind. Blown.
Hey Mark can you please do a video of chibis and more realistic manga characters cooking and eating? Maybe even some manga style food and restaurant scenes. That would be so great. Love your vids, keep up the excellent work!!!
Sounds I've used in my comic. BZZT, Ring, Creeeak, Riiiing, and of course. Thump. This tutorial is very needed.
Oh man, I admittedly forgot about sound effects when drawing some comic pages recently, maybe I'll think about adding them after seeing this!
very useful thank you
Wanting to create manga myself one day, I find this video very helpful! c: I'll be sure to tell my mother to look around and see if she can find Brody's Ghost for me, because I'd really like to read it after getting glimpses of it here.
Thanks Jacquelyne! :)
Great video Mark. Very helpful. I was wondering if you have read Bakuman?
This was a great help to me. I just recently started drawing manga and am looking for all the tips i can get. I love how you mix alot of American and Japanese styles together in your comics. I was also wondering, you use screen tones right? I wanted to start learning how to use them but I don't know where I would get them or HOW I would use them. right now I am just creating even shading and making them darker and lighter where needed. It works, but it doesn't look professional. Maybe you could give a tutorial on how to use screentones? given that you do use them that is.
I just wanted to add that this kind of videos really does help a lot.. maybe for some they just like the drawing vids but to me, and i hope others as well, find it very useful information. So thanks for sharing your thoughts and talents to all of us. ^^,
Awesome
I know I've commented this before, but seriously; Crilley, you should sell your Garageband songs. I would buy them!
Thanks! :)
I concur
Mark, you should do a video about color combinations and balance.
Even if it isn't a HTD video... These tips are extremely important!
lol, I remember that episode in sgt.Frog. And my friend recommends Death Note, so maybe I'll watch that some time. :) Great job Mr.Crilley, I really like the tips and comparisons you gave.
