- Ukraine has begun destroying Russian ‘turtle tanks’ using drones and rockets. One was taken out in occupied Luhansk using FPV drones, which the tank’s armour is supposed to protect it from. Drone footage showed multiple FPVs hitting the back of the tank until it burned. Another was blown up in Kharkiv by drone pilots of the 3rd Assault Brigade. The tank was destroyed along with three BMPs and one other tank. A ‘monster’ turtle tank complete with a mine-roller was also taken out. Still images showed it wrecked on the battlefield near the town of Krasnohorivka. The Ukrainians said it was badly damaged using rocket launchers. Russia has resorted to using turtle tanks to try and thwart Ukrainian drones. Commanders say the cheap craft are now their deadliest weapons.
But it seems Kyiv’s troops have found ways to overcome the added protection.

I haven't got time to filter through at the war thunder veteran comments on the so-called "turtle tanks' but of those only one "got it". The turtle achieved it's tactical aim of providing a very hard nut to crack while providing fire support for whatever its tactical objective was. Yep several of them were destroyed in the process. They also provided an important distraction to the Ukrainian for the UAV operators - what else was going on that the these drone operators could have been used against? I'd suggest the Russians know exactly what they are doing as demonstrated by their relentless advance against the Ukrainian positions.
The thing about the Russians is that from time immemorial they have encouraged everyone to underestimate them and look at you all, only too keen to fall prey to yoursheeple mentality in underestimating the Russians. Let's have look at those who have underestimated Russia in the past Napoleon, and the results today thereof. Russia has managed to claw back pretty much every scrap of land taken off them and defeat every major invading force since 1242. Do keep on underestimating them won't you?
Ukraine isn't an invading force, however, they have been the ones defending the entire war. If you're talking about invading other nations, Russia and the USSR themselves have had a poor track record, like in Finland and Afghanistan, and really only win against tiny little border nations that barely anybody has heard of. Ukraine is a new part of the poor track-record, considering that this was supposed to be a three day operation reaching past it's second year and how the supposed second most powerful military in the world has been dragged to a grinding halt in the Ukraine's frontlines.
Russia has been defeated multiple times and lost many wars ....even Poland defeated them once.

In any war taking out a tanks tracks will render it useless and very vulnerable. In WW2 the Germans produced an excellent gun platform called a Jagd Panther. They were able to destroy most less powerful allied tanks on mass. However, hitting their wheels and tracks usually did sufficient damage to render them non operational and the restricted gun movement rendered them useless to defend themselves. Often abandoned by their crew's who often destroyed their own vehicles. It would seem that the Russians have now arrived at the same problem. They don't have many of these contraptions and so when they appear they will become a priority target.
Drone operators never strike the tracks, but that turtle tank was disabled by ATM.
The Ukrainians and Germans have one overriding thing in common. I wonder if you can guess what it is 😂

Judging from all these footage of downed tanks, it would seem that the Achilles Heel of these Turtle tanks really are their heels (tracks). Once these tanks have been tracked, they can't even use their turrets or mounted guns effectively due to the corrugated shed on their head.

this is the shadow of a drone (probably the reconnaissance one from which this video was recorded). If you look closely, you can see that it moves a little (sways) slightly shifting back and forth across the metal surface.
At first, Ukraine used less expensive drones but with the rusty metal sheats on the cover, they need stronger and heavier drones for the job.

What do they need to see? Drones? How many tank on tank duels had we seen in this entire war? 3? 4?
Scrap armor isn't anything new. US troops added heavy logs and railroad ties their Sherman tanks to add some extra psychological protection against the superior German panzers. While not very effective, it gave tankers the ability to 'do something about it' while in the monotonous waiting periods any soldier often finds themselves in. These sorts of battlefield armor mods are sometimes better for morale than they are for protection against AP shells :)

What a waste of ammunition. They can't even see each other.
But it stops an assault.
You can’t make out people 50 meters away on a CZcams video filmed from a body cam. They most likely do know where the enemy are. Also a large portion of firing is suppressive. You fire in general area of the enemy not actually at an enemy. It prevents the assault from moving forward while your unit decides its next move.
Spoken by someone who has no concept of what real infantry warfare is. 90% or more of exchanged gunfire in infantry combat is suppressive in nature, 10% or less is actual aimed shots on a clear target. It has been like this since WWI. Two sides infantry exchange suppressive fire, hoping to deplete the enemy's ammo before their own is depleted first, before making an advance to kill the enemy when their ammo reserves are low or depleted. You play too many video games and watch too many movies where infantry can clearly see one another and 90% of their shots are kill shots. It's the other way around, fewer than 10% of a soldier's fired bullets are ever directly aimed at an enemy soldier in clear sight.
You have no idea what "suppressive fire" is, or what? Most of bullets are always "wasted" during combat, and that's how it should be to prevent enemies from advancing or calmly aiming at you when you don't see them.

Once you blow off the flimsy outer covering with some HE a turtle tank is just a tank. The covering many delay FPV drones but I doubt they'll stop a Javelin any more than a COPE cage. Nice try, fail.

Those turtle tanks reduce the actual effectiveness of the tank almost to nothing. They have no ability to see around them, cannot rotate their turret to engage enemies, non-functioning defensive systems, cannot easily ingress or egress. It's ridiculous to hobble a machine to that extent, and shows just how desperate the Russians are to try to defend against cheap drones. That right there is a win for Ukraine that battle tanks are basically turned into a hobbled demining machine.
It's true, these are no longer tanks, they are self-propelled artillery with limited effectiveness as the cannon is fixed.
Agreed, but that would be because Ukraine is starting to lack tanks in the Frontline. Russia by far is winning logistically. That is why they're sending such tanks. Russia also has the majority amount of FPV drones but we simply haven't seen much of it in action against vehicles because of Ukraines lack of tanks there.
Thats because these "tanks" aren’t being used as actual tanks. Theres reasons why they're put into such shells and the Russian army is not that stupid. Maybe these tanks lack repairs for an actual rotating turret? You would rather have a tank used for whatever, even if its not very effective than a tank laying in the rotting Siberia.
