@@reneegonser4065 Everything they throw out is because they PERCEIVE that they cannot sell it - for whatever reason. Damaged packaging. Out of date packaging. Holiday themed packaging when the holiday has passed. The sugar in the candy should keep it preserved forever. I have never ever had chocolate in my house that went bad. Not that it lasts very long before eaten, but there are those occasions where you find something old in the back of some cupboard. A lot of what gets thrown away is well ahead of the sell by date on the packaging.

I finally got enough nerve to dive. Found lots of fruits and vegetables. Used ur way to clean them. Learned so much from u.
I gotta say tho. It sickened me to see the waste. One dumpster had enough meat to feed a family of 4 for a couple months: pork chops...steak...chicken..stew meat...and probably a 5 lb pork roast.and about 20 gallons of milk. Shame on them. All sadly too old to save.
Agreed. As a former grocery store employee, it saddened me to see so much food get dumped when it could have been donated to a soup kitchen or food pantry. The store did donate their breads, pastries and some fruit to a church that fed the homeless, but they could have donated more. 😔

As a volunteer at the local Food Bank/Soup Kitchen, I am always surprised by the amount of stuff that gets thrown away that could be donated. TY for what you do.

What an amazing haul for donating to the shelter, I only hope you can find one that’s open during this difficult time, as I understand it the charities are even more reliant on volunteers than ever before. Heads up to all the hard working front line staff from drs and nurses to volunteers you’re all wonderful people and the world is a better place because of people like you.

It sounds easier said than done but you really can't. Having worked both on the for-profit and non-profit side there are so many legalities involved that its much harder said than done. Also, many charities wouldn't want candy because their clients are, most likely, on limited incomes and giving out candy is not a top priority. Food pantries and kitchens have so limited space that they need to save for pastas, canned goods, etc. So it sounds good in theory but non profits really aren't going to want it, especially in a society with many children facing obesity . As for employees taking it, a good manager would not let that happen. The company cannot write off the stale merchandise but then let an employee take it as it would violate IRS codes and regulations. So yes, much gets dumped. Plus these are odd times and many businesses didn't plan on a nation-wide shutdown.

Wow, love the candle. The candy was a big treasure find. I started to stop at an ALDI dumpster several months ago, but someone was already was there saving the food.
You should've stopped by anyway. Sometimes, there is more food than any one person could possibly take. I'm sure they'd be more than happy to share and you might even make a new friend. I sometimes hope to run into other divers, especially since I sometimes find more than I can take personally and want to make sure the rest doesn't go to waste.

Candy keeps a long time and there may never be another one like it.....the way things are going in the world it may be hard to find for a long, long time.....
My Daughter froze bags of candy for Halloween, Christmas and gingerbread houses, enough for other reasons for treats. And that was just what the kids collected at halloween. She also let the kids pick out 5 favorites for that night and then pick 2 a day until gone. Worked beautifully.
