As a sound guy, I like the PCM sound for the water scene. It's fuller, more of a lower register.

Great video. I found that the DPA4560 mics are pretty good for ambient recording. Not tried them in a natural landscape like you have (and we don't have the spectacular insect life over here in England) but the City scapes are very nice and you have the added bonus of no-one being aware that you're recording. I even sat down to lunch with two sound editor mates and recorded the first five minutes of our chat before I showed them what I was doing. (My trusty Zoom F3 was in my pocket, of course).

Such a great video (as always). I've actually been looking at the 3Dio FS Binaural mic for a project I'm working on (because it fits in my budget a little better). As far as the river recording, the DPA and Sony both sound great and I think it would boil down to application. The Sony sounded as if some of the highs were rolled off but the DPA sounded as if there may have been a notch boost in some of the higher freqs. The breathing was really shocking to me though. You could hear it but it wasn't to the amount that it couldn't be edited if need be. Thanks again for all the effort you guys put into these videos.

I currently have a Tascam DR-100 mk3 that I have been using for my first attempts at recording very subtle nature sounds. However, I am going crazy with its loud noise floor (no matter the mic), so for my sanity I am considering getting an F3 or biting the bullet and getting a Mixpre 3-ii. So I'm wondering in your experience is the slightly lower noise floor of the Mixpre noticeable over the F3 for very subtle recordings?? Also how would the 4560 compare to just using simple EM172 capsules? Also -- your videos are very informative and a pleasure to watch!

Hi! Capturing good audio in these situations can be quite challenging! In my experience, using mono lav mics is a solid approach, as they are discrete and can be positioned strategically to reduce wind interference. It's definitely a task I wouldn't undertake with this current setup.

Nice comparison. The DPAs sound great as always. Very interesting to hear the "tree ears" experiment, but especially the Sony vs DPA by the water. The Sony picked up a very minimal amount of background insect noise and was mainly the water sound, whereas the DPA's were the exact opposite.

Sony sounds much better in that water scene. More full and rich. I recently picked up the Zoom M3 Mictrak and it's working really well. They fixed the RF interference so it's super clean. I love the fact that it records a MS-RAW file for every recording so I can easily change the sound stage in post if I don't like the one that I originally chose. There is a BIG difference between the 32 bit recording vs the audio that is recorded in camera from the mic. Have you tried out the M3 yet? I think it would be a great addition to your kit and for only $199, it's a bargain.

That tree vs head comparison was nice. Ear leaf makes quite a huge difference to the sound. For my taste there was too many cicadas in the area. It's harder to feel that three dimensional space with that kind of steady noise in a space with no reflections. Nice video anyways 👍
Thank you for your feedback and for the cicadas, we apologize if they were a bit overwhelming. Unfortunately, they're almost everywhere where we're currently live, so it's hard to avoid them.

I'm actually in the midst of planning a project where I'll be binaurally recording high altitude mountain hikes in Bolivia, specifically above 4000 meters. I've been working hard to save up for the DPA 4560's, but your video really opened my eyes to the impact of breathing on the overall recording. Now, I'm contemplating whether I should explore alternative options. I was amazed by the sound quality captured by the Sony PCM D100 near the river. Do you reckon they would be suitable for recording mountain hikes and strenuous walks too?
Firstly, your project sounds absolutely fascinating! Recording high altitude mountain hikes in Bolivia will undoubtedly yield some incredible soundscapes.
Regarding your gear question, the Sony PCM D100 has been discontinued and finding one might be a challenge, not to mention the increasing prices for available units.
One of the main issues you might face while recording in high altitudes is wind noise. It can be quite a challenge to manage, especially if you're planning to record while on the move.
If you're looking to travel light, a handheld recorder paired with a set of omnidirectional microphones with wind protection could be a good option. However, you'll need to find a way to shield the microphones from wind noise effectively.
Thank you for the great video. For the comparison between the DPA's and the Sony, the Sony sounds more warm, but has less separation. The DPA's sound like there's compression going on. Probably the cicades causing that. They also, as mentioned below, affects the spatiality and the binaurel effect.
For the breathing, it was no surprise to hear it. I actually expected to hear it also in the earlier recordings, when Marcel walked from the water to the cicades. Compared to the Roland WPM-10 I own, the DPA's are more quiet on that part. With the Roland's I record also swallowing, very odd, and to be fair, not very pleasant. I wonder if that's the case with the DPA's.

The Sony system sounds much more pleasant to my ears via HS8 Yamaha speakers than the DPA/sound devices system which sounds quite shrill.
I swear at 5:26 I can hear dripping water from the Sony! Love the Sony!
My gear to record Sounds : Roland CS - 10EM, Rode Wireless Go 2 and the Tascam Portacapture X8. This is a great Combination to Record Sounds. Standalone only to Record Sounds with the Rode Wireless Go 2 and the Tascam Portacapture X8 is great.
Hi, we really like your work. Anyway I am interested in the DPA 4560. I do have a Zoom H5 but want to use attached to camera. I am not familiar with the microdot system. I can not find an adapter to 3.5 mm that would seem to work with cameras. So two questions. 1) is there such an adapter? For the second question I have the MS-TFB-2-MKII Sound Professionals, MS-TFB-2-MKII Sound Professionals, and the SR3D ASMR - Field recording - DIY Binaural microphone Kit. Would you have any comments as to how the DPA 4560 compares to these? Edit think I found adapter at b&h 😊.edit: opps not 2 mkii. Theother is the Roland cs 10 em OK learning, I see that 😂you reviewed the Roland so am going back to see previous. I was wat😂ching the video when you first got the dpa and you mentioned the cable issue. I agree.

Another test that confirms that there are hardly any bad microphones left and that everything depends on the intended use. I like both recordings and maybe a mix would be ideal.
And as for breathing, admit it, you breathed heavier on purpose. As fit as you two are, no one will believe you 😂

I have just purchased a Zoom F3 and was looking for a discrete/stealth microphone for ambient recordings. So, I've just purchased the 4560 based on your experiences. I'll be mainly recording ambient background sounds to complement my drone footage currently using just music. This is just a hobby for me; but I'm hoping for a more enjoyable hobby from now on. I currently own an Audio Technica BP4029 microphone. I just recorded some steam train sounds using the BP4029 and that was amazing (NYMR in Yorkshire, UK). I love the F3.
Even though, it seems, you can record on the F3 without regard to the 'magnification factor' is it best to record audio just guessing the 'magnification ' factor by just looking at the display, or just leave it at x16 default? Is their a sweet spot depending on the environment ?

Typically, I don't concern myself too much with the 'magnification setting' on the F3. I generally leave it at the x16 setting, mainly because the F3 doesn't have a seamless gain setting function like the MixPre.
In post-production, I handle gain and dB adjustments for the F3. Do you use a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) for that?
@@FreeToUseSounds I have 2 programs I can use; Cubase Pro and DaVinci Resolve Studio. I primarily use Cubase Pro over Fairlight.
The BP4029 has an M/S mode switch; do you use M/S or is the post processing too time consuming ? When would you use M/S in the field ?
@@ScarboroughTourist That's fantastic! Both Cubase Pro and DaVinci Resolve Studio are excellent programs. I primarily don't use M/S but rather DMS. I have the Schoeps DMS kit. The decoding process is just as straightforward as with M/S, made even smoother by the free Schoeps program. I use this kit the most.

For you is the sound of the breathing in the recording the same as what you heard while walking on the incline, or more or less pronounced? I’m really trying to gauge if these would be suitable for a project. Or if the sound of breathing would be unbearable.

We did another recording in Osaka during rain. We also have a video where we strolled along Seoul's canal. The key to avoiding noticeable breathing sounds is to walk slowly and maintain regular, calm breathing.
Additionally, city ambience tends to mask such minor noises quite well.
@@FreeToUseSounds Thanks for the tips. My intention would be to use them during walks in quiet natural environments. This video gave me a realistic use case. Because walking as slowly as I might, there are always some pretty steep inclines that raise the heart rate.

For anyone else that's watching this and wondering the same, I now have a set of these mics and I can confirm they will pick up practically every breath you take when in a quiet environment. For what I had in mind, they are a complete non-starter. But I don't necessarily blame the mics for that. I think any mic I would have on me will also pick up the breathing sound. Instead, I need to rethink my project and record audio separately. What I will attempt next is recording my audio separately using a dummy head like another video from Free To Use Sounds.
Very interesting video ! I'm surprised because I usually tend to dislike binaural recordings and find no elevation, but here I was amazed at how, to me, the river and the footsteps were right below and precisely situated. Although, i'm lacking the upper part, I don't hear the wind in leaves up my head...
I'm searching for a setup that would reproduce the elevation of wind in trees. I wonder if a quadriphony with omni mics + a Sony PCM in the center aimed at the sky would do a good job. What do you think ?
Oh yes, but there wasn't really any wind blowing. Otherwise, it wouldn't be a good recording. Wind protection is practically nonexistent. I'm sure that with the setup you have in mind, you'll be able to capture fantastic wind sounds. Do you plan on using BBGs? Otherwise, it could end up being quite an expensive kit :)

I am using a similar setup (DPA 4560 + Zoom F3) and I am doing great. But I'm trying to figure out how to limit the wind sensitivity (or it would be better to say "air shifts") because these microphones are very very sensitive even if you walk at an average speed. In my opinion, this is the only shortcoming of the DPA 4560s.
Has anyone found workarounds to solve this problem? Like wearing a woolen hat (not possible in summer btw) or something similar. DPA has never put out any wind muffs for such small capsules :(
Hello Marco! Oh yes that is always a challenge. Well have you seen what Rolf from Soundman did? He created a windshield for his binaural microphones. You could check it out and maybe DIY it?

How do you deal with in-ear noises caused by swallowing when using the DPAs? I find that swallowing can lead to my ear drums „clicking“ and that is picked up by the DPAs - small wonder when they are sitting in the ear canal. Do you place them more to the outside of the ear? To me, that is one of the few cons of this binaural system: I have to try and not swallow, breathe very quietly etc. Requires some discipline.
Well. I try not to swallow. Lol but I know what your referring too. I often times do not insert into the ear canal. Yes it does change the signature of the sound. But it’s a trade off.
I prefer the binaural recordings, even if the higher frequencies are a bit too present.
The breathing was less disturbing than some wind noise when you climbed up the hill.
I love binaural recordings! The DPA has good clarity, but I don't like the boost in the high end. Sounds a bit brittle to my ears and overshadows the low end.
I looked into the Neumann Kunstkopf but $9000? Not sure but its really intriguing.

Recording above the creek: The DPA 4560 recordings sounds more natural to me. You hear the reflections of the rock, you can tell the river is down below (but not very acurate) and you get the impression of standing where you stand.
The D100 recording is nice, but quite narrow. The stereo basis sounds not as wide as the creek is. It's quite detailed though, but sounds not as spectaculus as the DPA 4560. As the DPA 4560 recording has a little drop in the middle of the stereo width.
Also the DPA 4560 sound a little too crispy and almost a bit sharp in their heights. The D100 has more low mids and a touch more bass.
I would presume having a nice blend of both would do the whole trick. But I would be worried about some phasing issues here.

The DPA has a high pitched ringing noise in the higher frequencies. The PCM is abviously more limited, but yet closer to the reals sound nevertheless.
The high pitch noise are the cicadas.

@@bernios3446Ah yes! That’s because these are omnidirectional and with this technique you’re getting the ambience from almost all angles. The Sony faces forward to the water and with the cardioids capsules, you have more side shielding.

I was surprised that the PCM sounded better. But! Not sure the spot for the Pre-Mix was similar. The frequency of faster moving water and closeness to action creates a noisier treble sound. Same spot both recorders would really be better. 🤔

It's fascinating how recording equipment can alter our perception of the same sound, isn't it? Both of our recordings were made at the exact same spot. However, the difference in sound is due to the distinct polar patterns of the microphones we used.
With the omnidirectional microphone, it captures sounds from all directions around us, making the recording more immersive. On the other hand, the PCM, having a cardioid polar pattern, mainly picks up sounds in front of it and reduces the sounds coming from the sides and behind. That's why our recordings sound different even though they were captured in the same location.

@@kurotaka007 Dankeschön :) Yes, the versatility of this location is quite something! From recording the ambience to the river's sound both up close and at a distance, it certainly offers a rich palette of acoustic experiences. Venturing further into the forest or dipping a hydrophone underwater adds even more options to record. Not to mention, using a 5.1 surround microphone brings another unique version to the catalogue. It's quite an audio adventurer's paradise - so many options to explore! :)
What happened to the F3?
Hi Tim! I left in Korea because I have no use for it anymore.
Binaural ALWAYS wins when recording water. However the big flaw with the DPA and in general in-ear binaural microphones is that you can't put a deadcat on them. There just isn't a solution for that. My choice gear is EM272Z1 XLR + Zoom F3.
Oh there is a solution. Soundman created a wind protection which has mixed reviews but could do the trick. :)

Also the water scene, the highs are... too weird, I assume these are the cicadas, and must be some reason the Sony did not record these, but cannot figure out any reasonable explanation.
The differences can indeed be quite surprising.
As for the water scene, you're correct in assuming that the high frequencies are from the cicadas. The reason the Sony didn't pick up these sounds as much is due to its cardioid microphones, which were facing the water and therefore picked up fewer cicadas. On the other hand, the DPA's are omnidirectional and capture sound from all directions.
If you look up the polar patterns of these two types of microphones, you'll get a clearer understanding of why they capture sound differently. I hope this helps explain the differences you noticed!
Yeah, I spent like ~10 mins to find reliable specs but failed. However I can imagine no better explanation than the somewhat directional mics of the D100.
The loss of low frequencies in binaural set ups really shows up the bridge comparison. One of the reasons I'm not a big fan of binaural. It isn't as natural sounding even though it seems like it should be.

@@FreeToUseSounds Tried it with both a good set of over the ear studio headphones and studio speakers. I hear more high end splashing with the DPAs and more low end rumble of the water with the Sony. The DPAs are certainly more immersive, but seem to be less bassy. It might be that the Sony is a less precise capture of the environment, but it gives the impression of being "richer" because of the increased low end.
