Even with CZcams's compression, the DPA 2017 really shines through. The 50, 60 and 70 MKH's sound way too boring for me. DPA has a nice balance between sharpness, clarity and vocal depth. Nice video.

you should have also tested them outdoors or set up some noise in your space so as to show their off axis rejection and which mic has a tighter pick up
You are right. I’ll do this during the week on the farm here and let you see. I’ll try near a road so we can see how it handles.

The MKH 50 is one of the very best you can and has been for years. It's an old design, but a sheer quality multi purpose top dawg mic !
Although it is a super cardioid pick up, it is not a shot gun mic with an interference tube. The MKH 50 had a bigger brother, the MKH 60, this is essentially the same mic capsule and electronics as the 50 but with a much longer body, an interference tube design.
This gives the mic more directionality and rejection.
The interference tube will offer the same sonic qualities but will give a greater reach for more distance recording and some more directionality.
However the tube can give more issues in tricky inside acoustics.
A shot gun mic is not designed to be used necessarily for very close micing. But if it sounds good then why not ?
The DPA mics are also some of the best in the world, the 2017 is a new design, new capsule and electronics and does not use the RF condenser principle like the MKH mic.
Like you say, both are brilliant but like I say mics are like camera lenses, you use different ones for different things. Choose your mics carefully for best results and applications.
The DPA is clean and very natural, great top end at a distance.
I suspect the 2017 will sound "closer", or more consistent sonically from 6ft away than the 50 will. This will lose it's suck being further away.
I can hear an uplift in bass from the 50 and this is due to proximity effect. Get in really close to the mic and the bass is accentuated, which can be used to advantage.
The shotgun, longer interference tube design of the 2017 is not designed for proximity effect characteristics. More isolation, rejection and distance with a very natural sound.
Perhaps we can send you some more mics to review?, the Sanken CS3e is brilliant and also the tiny Sanken CSM1.

Hey John your knowledge is way beyond mine! Yes. The beginning is the mkh50 without any eq. It’s so nice. I tend to add a little eq when I make little videos. So it was hard not to! I quite enjoyed doing the unboxing and this type of video. Very different for me. I am certainly enjoying sound the further I go into this! When I filmed Chirs with the 2017 sat there and was thinking woooow. I would be up for doing any mics. If you have ideas, I am down. Really appreciate your comment. Tyvm 🎉

Would you say the dpa 2017 would make a better on camera mic than a mk50 which is not mean for on camera it’s meant to be placed closer to subject
Interesting you should ask. I tried this at an event recently and it was good. You got to be relatively close but it’s good. I have a little Sony one I use as default but swapped it out. Really loved the sound. What I’ll do is run a test vs the mkh50 and the Sony when I try them outside as per another viewers request.
