I thought the exact same thing. Her vocal use here was dynamic, moving and emotional for the serious topic of the song. Not meant to be huge and use every vocal range. The reviewer wants "more emotions and rawness"????....she delivered that 10 fold but we know this subject will mostly be felt by the demographic it's describing and completely lost or ignored on everyone else.
Got back recently due to a SKZ reaction as I am an avid fan, but I am pleasantly surprised that you're reacting to this song. I also heard it first online due to the heavy weight of the lyrics. Personally, I believe the message held more importance than a heavy vocal/beat presence in this song. Also I highly recommend CHINCHILLA - Little Girl Gone, a music video came out recently. Smaller artist, but I have a deep appreciation for her vocal tone.
Won't you please Stop the 'She's got so much potential'... The voice is raw, honest and authentic. Production is superb and choices of words is so much different than what we've been hearing lately in pop music. Not to forget that she's just 18 years old still. At that age she knows how to give the song what it needs (what a talent). Opposed to just expressing all the virtuosity she has already developed, just for the sake of impressing. I know you're just expression your opinion, but hold into account that it's not meant to be like the albums you hold in your back on the first place. It's cultural Art, and I think you should view it as such.
You should go back and listen to Ani Difranco, Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, Poe.... Tracy Bonham. This is an extrodinary example of writing with quiet screams... or, "womens rights or whatever".
