  • "His dream of restoring the old Soviet Union simply is not possible. It's unrealistic. It's wrong. It's evil."
Putin needs to know that his Soviet Union dream is “unacceptable” to the rest of the world, The Times’ former diplomatic editor Michael Binyon tells #TimesRadio.

That's exactly the reason why we should help Ukraine win this war now. If we don't, we will have to face him again in Poland, the Baltics or Finland, and this time around we will have no other choice but to send in our troops. The cost benefit analysis of this situation clearly indicates that we will be better off giving Ukraine everything they need to push him back than not doing so. What many (particularly in the US) still don't understand is that it's not charity, it's an effort in securing their own interests. I hope our politicians stop playing short term re-election politics and actually make an effort to explain this simple truth to their voters.

Why do they keep saying Soviet Union?
USSR was about the economic system first and foremost. And the system no one wants to restore. So there are few lessons to be learned from that.
The Soviet system fell because it wasn't sustainable without the global socialist revolution at which the early Bolsheviks aimed. The Comintern was an international organization present in the Western Europe and the USA alike. But Stalin dismissed it in 1943.
No! What Putin actually wants to restore is the Russian Empire pre 1917 Why isn't it obvious?

It was Dr. Raphael Lemkin a human rights lawyer who in 1944 defined the term "genocide". He presented the genocide of Ukrainians perpetrated by Soviet Bolshevik communists in four stages. The Holodomor Genocide 1932 -33 (death by starvation of the Ukrainian peasantry), the extermination of the Ukrainian intelligentsia, the destruction of the Ukrainian Orthodox church its parishes and clergy and the mass deportations of ethic Ukrainians from the territory of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic to remote and extreme areas of the Soviet Union and Gulag concentration camps. With the suppression of the Ukrainian language, arts and culture Ukraine became a Russified soviet satellite republic. It was the Ukrainians who showed the greatest resistance to soviet communism demonstrated by the hundreds of peasant uprisings and dissident movements and as a consequence it was the Ukrainians who suffered the most repression during the Soviet Union's reign of terror which resulted in millions of deaths. Estimates go as high as ten million victims. This is not common knowledge in the UK for some strange reason. Not taught in British schools and not commemorated alongside other genocides of Holocaust Memorial Day. Britain in fact has refused to officially recognise the genocide of Ukrainians on several occasions.

We must realize one thing. With all due respect for those hesitating about giving Ukraine the fighter jets it needs, we must realize that to win a war in the 21st century you must have: air superiority, tactical surprise, total shock and absolute offensive strategy. Let's quit wagging our tails and put some bite into the hide of the aggressor nations by getting this conflict off the front page of every newspaper in the world. Everyone wants the Ukraine to be successful, but for the Ukrainian military to seriously make haste in closing down this absurd and immoral war, we've got to get fighter jets to Ukraine's top pilots. If all goes to plan, Crimea will fall in August of this year, but it can be done with a lot less bloodshed if Ukraine has air superiority. No one wants to hear this, but Crimea must go back into Ukraine's hands because if the war ends and Russia holds on to Crimea, the ports of Odessa will be at the mercy of Sevastopol Russian Navy base and the coastal cities on the Sea of Azov will be in permanent jeopardy.

France and China signed lesser agreements. Furthermore I suspect such nuclear weapons had probably been fabricated in the the 1970's, which would make them 50 years old now. I doubt Russia would have released the information required to command, repurpose and maintain them, so Ukraine would literally have been starting from scratch. However we do have a moral duty to support Ukraine because it is important that international treaties mean something. I would also suggest that those countries who make such a virtue of not having nuclear weapons should be more concerned that a treaty aimed towards nuclear deproliferation has been breached. Who now will give up their nuclear weapons?

14 tanks, that's a training unit. Not an offensive force that's going to drive the Russians out. It's insulting.

2 comments from my side: Russia had 50 years to convince those countries to join, it could only have them in its camp by force; so it's natural that they wanted to switch camp once they got independent also for economic reasons, Russia was lagging behind with her economy; the Russians didn't veto the expansion in the NATO-Russia council in 1999, Putin was at power in 2004 when the 2nd wave of eastward expansion occurred and pretended back then to be an ally of the West in fight against terrorism, he didn't veto it back then neither; he started to complain about the collapse of the USSR after his invasion on Georgia in 2008...2nd argument: countries like Poland and the Czech Republic has an alliance treaty with the UK and the Allies before the outbreak of WWII in April 1939 and fought alongside the Western Allies trough the entire war, signed the UN Charta in 1942. Russia occupied Central Europe in 1945 and falsified the elections not allowing those countries to choose who they want to join, so Poland's return to NATO was a natural return to the Western Alliance it was part of in between 1939 and 1945...I really don't blame Finland and Sweden...it's an another example how Russia losses allies and good neighbours and self-isolates..Ukraine struggled since 1920s to have a statehood and national identity...
