- As-Salam as-Sultani (Salute to the Sultan) is the national anthem of Oman, composed in 1932. During the reign of Sultan Qaboos from 1970 to 2020, the second verse specifically praised him. This is the version of the anthem shown here. Following Sultan Qaboos’ death in 2020, the second verse was changed to no longer specifically give praise to him.

I think you can hear the influence of Sultan Qaboos's passion for European classical music here. I also note the possible lyrical debt to the UK national anthem - 'may he live long and triumphant'. Incidentally, there was a pre-Qaboos anthem, though seemingly used only on formal ceremonial occasions involving the Sultan himself.

He reigned for so long that he's THE sultan of Oman. The people can't imagine anyone else being on the throne, kinda like how British people consider Elizabeth II THE monarch of the UK due to how long she's reigned.

Because this is specifically the version which was used during the reign of Qaboos (hence the second verse saying “be happy! Qaboos has come”. Eventually I’ll upload the current version of the anthem with the new 2020 lyrics, and then I’ll use Sultan Haitham

May heaven bless him. Be cheerful and commend him to the protection of our prayers.” At the very end, replaced by “So ascend to the apex of the heavens. Illuminate the cosmos. Rejoice and relish in prosperity”
