About this time last year I was in the process of putting together the videos for the Sick Boi album.
My friend B**** had just bee made homeless, he was kicked out of his previous flat for having some wild parties, and covering the walls in graffiti. I bumped into him one day and he was full of excitement. "Ive got the sickest place ever to film in"
B**** had just moved into a squat in an old shop across the road. He told me the place was massive, and that there was a small homeless community living there. I arranged to go check out the place a few days later.
Me and my camera guy Sam headed over, we had to enter through a small side entrance, a big green metal door. There was this kid outside, probably about 18, 19, waiting to get in, obviously twisted on a universe of drugs, who started telling us how his girlfriend had stolen all his things, halfway through the story he broke into a double time rap and told us he was gona be the biggest rapper in Brighton. The big green door flew open, there was screaming, three lads launched another out, covered in blood. I knew him, i'd met him at one of B***'s partys a few weeks before. They told him he wasn't welcome anymore. I guess this was the place.
A guy with his hood up got in my face and asked what I wanted, but then recognised me from making music and became instantly cheery. I told him B**** had said it was a good place for filming, and he asked me if i'd like a guided tour, this place already seemed perfect for what I had in mind.
The place was massive, 4 underground warehouse floors, an old industrial lift, cables ripped out the walls, and a big cage where I assume they used to keep stock. My guide told me that they'd have organised fights in the cage most nights, they'd get drugged up on ketamine so they couldnt feel anything, and beat eachother till one gave up.
I found B**** in the middle of one of the giant ware house floors making a small fire, he was in the throws of addiction at the time and it showed. B**** is undoubtedly one of the most witty and charismatic people I know, but at this point the claws of addiction had sunk their hands in and he was illegible and erratic, ill be honest it was really difficult to see, I love him, and before that i'd tried everything I could to help him, but until people are ready for help you cant. Speaking from a decade of sobriety life can be very beautiful without chemical escapism but I digress.
We set up a week later, the shoot was chaotic. During it the 19 year old kid we met outside stole a baseball and cricket bat we were using for props, ran upstairs and smashed through 4 of the upstairs windows. Another person living in the squat proceeded to accuse every member of the crew for stealing her iphone, followed by lots of screaming and kicking, which obviously hadn't happened.
Despite this we got through the shoot, making the most of each spot, wrapping up in the early hours of the morning we'd brought something together that looked awesome.
The atmosphere was constantly tense, which was perfect.
The video ended up one of the best we've ever filmed.
It looked way better than if we'd spent a stupid amount of money building a set, because it was real, and that delivered an unmatched rawness.
Illest Of Our Time comes out on the 29th of March!

Can’t wait for the song to drop, intrigued by the video description. I spent a lot of my teens and twenties living in different squats, some nice, some not so nice. You summed up what squat life can be like pretty accurately. I now work with addicts in homeless hostels, everyday is a different heartbreak but the success stories make it all worth it.
Hope you’re still continuing to improve everyday, we’re all thinking of you.

A video I'm quite proud of. We were absolutely up against it filming this over one evening into the early hours. Not only under time restraints but fearful of being robbed of the kit or attacked for most of it. All of these things feel worth it when seeing the final video. Hope you all love it!

My husband has schizoaffective disorder and is currently in a pretty hard psychosis. Ren was recommended since I was looking up vids about schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder, so I thought, why not? I'm about 10 songs into a playlist and I'm in awe of this guy's talent! I've never been a fan of "mainstream" rap but Ren's music actually has meaning...not just songs about "hos, money, and guns". He has written music I didn't even know I needed. I'm currently on my porch listening to the frogs in my pond and just waiting on the bottom to fall out again. I don't know how to help my husband so I'm here talking to all of y'all. Y'all don't have to talk back, but it really helps me to know im not alone in all of this. My husband is living in Hell and I cant help him with this. I feel totally worthless. So thanks for just being here with me ❤❤ If anyone is still reading and needs someone to talk to, I'm here. Ren.. doubt you’ll see this but I want to thank you for getting this 73 yo Gma of 2 20 yr old grandsons to better understand and appreciate rap. I like (and listen to) all types of music, but I had avoided rap. Your posts, and the gazillion reactions to them, have helped me with how this music is structured.. and how better to understand it. You have such a gift and I believe you know how to best use it. I hope you are able to fully recover from your battle with auto-immune issues.. or at least are able to fully live with them and thrive. Same, my 17 yr old son is always throwing out rhymes at me which I usually try to ignore; BUT I'm 48 and sort of finding out why he likes this type of music. I love music that tells a story, and Ren definitely does that in every new video I've been discovering on YT. Might not understand or keep up with everything, but I appreciate how incredibly talented he and everyone around him must be to put these amazing videos together.

I can only guess due to how little I know, but there's a rap artist who goes by the name NF who you may find that you can appreciate & value for the same or similar reasons.
If you decide to give any of his songs a listen, & in case your tastes in listening experiences are comparable to mine, I suggest Googling their lyrics so that you can read them as he raps them (if you're able to read & listen/watch simultaneously).
It's something I used to do when I first began listening to rap because I wasn't yet used to the speed at which the lyrics are often delivered so I wasn't yet able to understand the words without reading them; but I also wanted to be able to understand a song's message at the same time that I listened to it because I felt that it allowed me to have a more comprehensive, cohesive, immersive, & emotional listening experience overall... so that's what I did until I eventually learned how to actually HEAR rap lyrics in real-time.

@@yattaaa641 because being depressed makes your more self reflective and mindful so you do more introspection and get to know yourself better Dark and light sides of yourself and this is always a good thing. So he’s not second guessing anything anymore because he’s done the work on himself due to having depression. So he’s trusting his intuition and getting wise so he’s turned the curse of depression into a blessing 🌱☀️💚

Hi Ren. I'm a 58 year old guy from the States. I grew up in an era of punk/post-punk and old school hip-hop. I've dealt with depression and anxiety over the years... still haunts me. Your music (whether hip-hop, with The Big Push, with Chinchilla, or whether story driven journeys like "The Tale Of Jenny & Screech") has changed me. Has changed me for the better... made me think, feel, ponder like I haven't previously. I need to say thank you. Thank you for the music you create, for the meaning, the lyrics, the rhymes. I don't know if I'm the only one to notice... Or if I'm nuts. But Ren's latest rap songs lean in to the EDM elements, but they toe the line, never really crossing. He uses so many cadences vocally that he bends the beat just inside the hip hop genre. Which is in fact a perfect evolution of the artform. It's pretty dope.
This sounds like it belongs in Cyberpunk 2077. I love this track so much.
When Ren speaks I listen because what he says resonates with my own situation, and I'm 71 years old and been struggling with illness & PTSD amongst other things. Pain is my constant companion ,music is my only pleasure.

Came to Ren for his words about mental and physical issues and was blown away. Hearing tracks like this..... everything I like about Vinnie Paz without any of the problematic bullshit. Carry on you fucking angel, I adore you.
The song feels like an act of vulnerability and authenticity because he's showing us a darker side of himself, that is just as true & real to him as his other sides. We know from his previous songs he has at least 2 sides: the genius side and the physically ill side. It's easy to empathize with these, appreciate them, and value them. But with 'Illest of our Time' I think he shows us a 3rd side that is harder to empathize with -- the dark/twisted side of Ren. The lyrics are brutal, twisted, violent, to some degree. And they are also him. And that's fine--we all have some 'twistedness' in us--we just conceal it to different degrees. Ren in this case is revealing his darkness, putting it on display for all to see. His final scheme lyrically here ties it all together by suggesting he is a 'fallen angel' with tattered wings, banished from heaven. But then he says 'Living with depression is a blessing in disguise, never second guessing intuition getting wise.' His depression helped him grow wiser, more self-aware, & Ren exposing his dark/twisted side like this, unapologetically, could be seen as an act of self-awareness-borne-from-suffering, authenticity, and vulnerability. His wearing white, I think, is meant to contrast the partial perception we might form of him (heroic, savior, goodness, vulnerable, soft) against the violent backdrop of animals fighting each other in an abandoned warehouse.
😢😮 wow this is a very twisted up song/rap. I truly hope he gets the help he is searching for. To me this song is him calling for attention... he is wearing white as a symbol of spreading his wings far and wide, has rebelled christianity perhaps, struggling with religion... everyday society anxious issues, financial struggles, living expenses, all rolled into one.

Last week I had my therapist's appointment on Monday, and then my GP visit on Friday, and I have social anxiety, and not "being in a crowd makes me anxious", that's actually very okay, even going to the store is okay, because I'm basically invisible, but it's stuff like doctor's appointment, when all their focus is on me, that I really dread that and freak out. Anyway my GP told me my liver is showing signs of distress and she signed me up to go to the hospital to get an abdomen sonogram to better look into it, so, more dread, more social anxiety waiting which I'm already dreading, on the 28th. But then I saw on the 29th this will come out, and it's like I changed from thinking "5 days till I have to go to do the sonogram..." to "yes, but 6 days till we get a new Ren's song". The anticipation and excitement of it almost cancel out my dread and anxiety. And even if it'll be a horrible experience, I'll know I'll soon have something amazing to watch.
Sorry that I blabbered too much, I'm literally unable to be brief. But all that just to say, this also completely changed the outlook I have for the rest of the month. Not many can do magics like this. Ren is one of the few.
