  • This Old House electrician Heath Eastman takes a close look at the pros and cons of a unique, one-of-a-kind tool aimed at making electrician’s work easier.

The DeWalt Cordless Cable Stapler is designed for electrical contractors and anyone who runs significant amounts of electrical cable. Electrical codes require that wires be secured to framing structure. This usually means hand-stapling hundreds or thousands of staples. Nothing comes close to delivering the power and consistency to streamline the wire-stapling process like this stapler.
The stapler runs on DeWalt’s 20V Max battery platform and comes kitted with a 2 Ah battery, case, and charger ($249) and is available as a tool-only if you’re already vested in the platform ($199). The stapler utilizes the latest in cordless tool technology: brushless motor and lithium ion battery. The two combined make for a powerful gun that does what it’s designed to do (in most cases).
I asked DeWalt to send the stapler to us to test out. I’ll be passing my sample along as a donation to our friends at YouthBuild [youthbuild.org]-not because I don’t like it, but because I have no use for it on a daily basis. Our electrician Heath Eastman got a sample to test out as well. Heath put the stapler to the test throughout his jobsites along with his crew.

I’ve been using the Dewalt stapler for two years now. Great, great product. It really speeds things up. It won’t replace the traditional steel staples because some spots are hard to get to with the stapler.

I've had mine for a few months. It's been awesome. I wasn't on the DeWalt battery platform but I figured I'd try it out I kinda gave up on Milwaukee coming out with one. I'm sure they'll come out with one now that I made the purchase. I do find my self using more staples then I would doing it by hand. I feel like Chevy Chase putting Christmas lights up with this thing.

I LOATHE hammering staples, even around my house, so I bought a Gardner Bender(?) spring powered stapler, and I like it a lot. I can't justify the expense of this tool and staples yet, but it's keeping it's place on my wish list.

Wow. I've been an Electrician for over 40 years. This sure is a long way from where I started. My boss 40 years ago, wouldn't even let's us greenhorns use an electric drill. Ever drill out a roughin using just a brace and bit? He'd be rolling in his grave if he knew of this.

I use this for hanging light wire fencing. It's nice having the wide crown, but the tip safety is picky about wanting to staple thick material like a Romex wire, as opposed to a fencing wire.

  • @sparky178

I own one and I really like it, only problem is the light stopped working so I have to really look so I don’t drive a staple through a wire!

That stapler needs another button in or on the trigger to toggle staple punch depth. That way you could cinch wires & cables. Hope DeWalt finds this in the ether.
