Alapana is exploring a Raga aesthetically. The starting point for this is the understanding of the theory behind it and how to apply this theory in one' s presentation. A student who is completely new to Raga improvisation, must make it a habit , to listen to compositions in the Raga for which Alapana has to be made. Slowly the idea of patterning and improvising unfolds. I must confess that a lot of practice is required at this stage , with student constantly listening to their output , to make the changes required.
In the Second part I am talking about the Raga Lakshanas which will cement the understanding of Manodharma ,better. Do listen in and get the concepts clear , before actually playing .

Although I have played the veena for many years, I am a novice when it comes to manodharma. I learned a little bit of alapana and kalpana swaram from my childhood guru just to know what each one means. These past few years I have been longing to learn more but did not know where to start. But over these past few months with your gentle guidance I have started to explore kalpana swarams with more confidence. In Nadaloludai I was able to build kalpana swarams beyond what you did - this is not something I would have dreamed of trying last year!!
Alapana right now feels to me like a steep hill to climb - as you said in the video it seems daunting. I am hopeful that with your guidance I can make progress. So my heart is simply filled with gratitude as I watch this video for the guidance you provide. I am sure there are plenty of other vainikas like me around the world who appreciate everything you do.
Yes Nimmy, I hope the fear for Manodharma will melt away by watching this two part series for many Vainikas out there. Thanks and best wishes
Thank you very nice, I always thought aalapana is very hard, you made it sound simple.
Best wishes
Thank you so much Ma'am. This Really Helped a lot. 🙏🙏
Best wishes
This video is really very useful one. You have explained it so clearly that it becomes easier to practice. The ideas of how alapana should start and progress will help in pract
practicing it more efficiently
Thanks Akshata
I'm really enjoying your way of playing. I would like to know about your guru. Please. My salutations to you. Mam.
Thanks and best wishes. My Guru is the great Veena Maestro Shri. Chittibabu.
Thank you for sharing. Very helpful. Not many teachers explain the creative concepts in a manner that people who are not naturally gifted with an inherent talent and flair for music, are also able to understand and acquire those skills. That is where many aspiring students are discouraged and tend to give up early.
Absolutely. Some very talented musicians drop off, because of the difficulty in understanding the complex stuff. I feel that the Carnatic music dynamics will have to simplified without diluting it''s essence, for such students.
Eagerly waiting for the next theory aspect of raga lakshana ma'am.. Humble namaskarams🙏
Thanks Nagendra
Namaskaram mam!Such a detailed step by step guide to invoke manodharma itself! So much technical info to understand and digest for beginners like me who is still learning geethams :-). Thank you so very much mam for your efforts in sharing the nuances of alapana with so much patience!
Thanks Kousalya

Namaste madam very good explanation thank you
Thanks Janaki
I have no interest at all in music but loved this clip somehow. Is there a video where you explain the various terms you've used with the natural assumption that the viewer would've known - shajjamam, madhya stayi, etc.?
Ta for this lovely video
All these terms come during the process of learning. I would suggest if you are interested, to take a peek at my watch and play series, where I have used these terms time and again. Thanks for writing in.

@@malaviswanathanWill do, Mala. Ta. The problem, though, is that I'm a 56-year old already, but won't let that deter me too much :)

Basic question: Are there rules or practices regarding the way an alapana is played have anything to do with the song that follows it? To explain myself, would a Bilahari alapana differ based on whether you wish to play Toli Janma or Paridanamichite or Na Jivadhara later? My guess is that since it has nothing to do with tala or sahitya, the alapana is sort of standalone and regardless of the subsequent gita
Apart from understanding and playing a Raga through it's Grammar, the song that is to be played also plays a role to an extent. Picking up some nuances from the Krithi and highlighting phrases in the Alaapana, will make it apt for the take off. Alaapana therefore need not be stand alone
@@malaviswanathan Clear. Thanks much
Very useful video mam. Iam practicing your
Vatapi ganapatim now. So it is more useful to learn alapana also. Mam your blending of kapi andDesh was so. beautiful ❤️. I would like to learn it I have started it I am. very doubtful. about the video and the notation given in the description box. Must be. my mista ke. Could you please sing the swaras. Please mam.
Thanks Roopa.
In kapi and Desh the major difference is happening in the Gandharam. Where I have given g play G2 or sadhrana Gandharam and wherever it is G , play antara Gandharam
Thank you mam
Thanks Manas
