    Clapton is my favorite player to ever live. My wife took me to see him in September of 2021 and he was 76 and still smokin'. His tone just literally fills the arena. It's amazing how truly massive he sounds and if you've ever heard him live I'm sure you know what I mean. Also Michael I recently started making youtube Shorts and sometimes get quite a bit of views but it seems like every Clapton song I put up there doesn't get hardly any views. Have you experienced that same kind of nonsense with the stupid algorithm? I hope your Clapton video blows up!

    12:28 the thing is: he’s starting on B, the 9th of A but.. it actually works so well because it’s the third of G, which is the chord in the background harmony.
    That’s what Clapton genius is about.

    Finally, someone reacts to this version of Old Love, which I played as I went down for a serious operation knowing it could be the last thing I ever heard. I was prepared for every eventuality having listened to it. It speaks to me at the deepest level. This is my favourite guitar solo of Eric's and one of my favourite solos by anyone. The dynamics are gorgeous and those harmonics as he comes out of the solo are sublime. Even Andy Fairweather-Low is feeling it. Beautiful.

    this is a great live version. It adds to the (also great) studio version where both Robert Cray and Eric solo, with their very different guitar "voices". Those two guitar solos, the interplay, the guitar voices reasoning, straightening things out between them drew me to the song on first listen 30 years ago. I love Robert's sometimes staccato type playing

    Had a chance to see Steve Gadd Band at a small club here in Seattle a year or two ago (sat center stage about 15 feet from his set). Never shows off. Doesn't need to. He just grooves and I could watch it all day. Michael Landau was playing guitar-incredible player with a really unique style. Highly recommended! This song was co-written by Clapton and Robert Cray, and the original version on the Journeyman album has them both playing on it. They’ve played it together live periodically since then.
    As for the rest of the commentary - this is the whole point of blues. Whether it’s Clapton or B.B. King. It’s all about expression. What B.B. called “speaking with good diction”. The simplicity of the blues is what leaves it wide open to improvisation and expression, and that is the whole point of it. Pure feeling and communication.

Michael, your explanation of ‘what makes Clapton Clapton’ or or as Uncle Rick would put it, what makes him ‘great’ might just be the best overview of Clapton I’ve ever heard and I’ve seen him live at least half a dozen times since the late 80s. Also your playing in your example of ‘singing’ and building a story at the end there was superb and articulated perfectly your point. Can I ask what amp you are using, it’s a lovely tone?

    Very interesting analogy between people speaking and Clapton-style soloing. I’ve never thought about it that way, but it completely makes sense. Maybe this is why the majority of the typical “greatest guitarists ever” lists are usually pentatonic based players.

    • @Utubewrk123
      @Utubewrk123 Před rokem +1

      I love pentatonics. And that’s what my ear gravitates towards. The people that make fun typically chuggers don’t realize that those pentatonics scales are used for rock, classic rock, pop, blues obviously, funk and I play them over RnB which I love so although some guys love prog rock or math rock I find it boring and has no melody whatsoever. It’s just fast scales. Boring. Love the pentatonics.

    I envy you Michael with your musical ear (a gift most of us don't have).
    I have two personal descriptions that I call: "fast ears" and "hear in 3D".
    "Fast ears" is just the ability a few people have to listen to a lead run at tempo once, and then play it back (maybe not note-for-note but pretty close).
    "Hear in 3D" is the ability a few people have to listen to chord progressions once and then play them back mostly accurately.
    One can have 20+ years of experience on guitar, and then a teenager down the street with "fast ears" and "hear in 3D" gifts can pick up a guitar for the first time and within six months have you asking "how do you do that again?".

    The more I listen to Clapton the smaller he gets. He is a better than average professional guitar player and a very good singer. He is not what I thought as a kid. I have seen hundreds better. He never surprises me. He is so derivative of so many Blues players.
