Fixing Hole in Exhaust - JB Weld Extreme Heat

  • Today I complete a quick fix to my trucks exhaust pipe! The last pipe that curves has a small hole and the rest of the pipe is solid, so I am trying to apply JB Weld Extreme Heat patch to see how it works! After ~2000 miles it has survived and looks good for many more miles!!

    I use the jb weld extreme heat on exhaust manifolds and it holds up well. I typically put a piece of thin forming metal over the patch and tighten with wire and it holds up well. Recommend it!

  • @DDEENY
    @DDEENY Před 10 měsíci +34

    For that type of repair I'd use a small piece of metal window screen formed to the contours of the pipe's surface and apply the repair paste over the screen to achieve a stronger repair. The screen can be held in place with wire wrapped around the pipe to secure it in place while the repair paste is applied.

    Appreciate the after trip follow up. Had a couple small holes near the flange where the y pipe was welded together. My gas welding skills suck, thought I'd try this. The stuff is thin enough when mixed it will sag if applied too thick. Was trying to pack in where the pipes join, had to keep working it with the spreader until it started to set. FWIW.

    I use the JB Weld HighHeat Epoxy Putty and I've used it on a hole in my exhaust like yours and now I'm trying it on a complete tear away of a joint where my exhaust manifold meets my catalytic converter pipe. Hopefully it works out. Just applied it today and letting it cure overnight and I will fire it up. Hopefully it gets rid of this annoying rattle at idle.

    I bought some to fix a radiator with a small hole at the top of the radiator. I know the general area of the hold but not specifically where the hole is. Radiator only leaks when I drive. I was curious about the consistence and plan to use a toothbrush to apply. I had used another type of jd weld that was more like a putty... didn't stop the leak. You might have used some cheese cloth to assist with the application, especially over the hole. I was impressed and hope this stops the leak on my radiator.

      me too. then, I saw my buddy pull a small container from his garage fridge, remove a plastic plug he put on top & swirl it up for a Briggs & Stratton repair. it worked. I asked how long it had been there & he guessed a few weeks. I asked if keeping it in the fridge helped too (along with the plastic) & he said it, “helped to not lose it out here,” but didn’t know if low temp kept it from setting. he keeps super glue & epoxy in there too. he out-fishes me every time, so I have to believe in his methods.

    No need to spread it so wide, concentrate on more on and by the hole. Take a roll of aluminum foil and do 10 layers wrap it over the putty and then put 4 hose clamps around the foil and one of those clamps directly over the hole pushing the foil down holding in that putty when it dries.

      @neilfromclearwaterfl81 Před 8 měsíci

      Be mindful that at the manifold your dealing with what you might consider exhaust plasma plus the back pressure from a catalytic converter which will generate higher temperatures and pressures than the product is designed for. An organic paste is not going to hold up for long in those conditions and neither are most epoxies going to hold up where even a gas or arc welded repair will often fail. One does have to be realistic in their expectations despite them listing manifolds as a potential use on the package.
      Best!
