Dick Tracy (NES) - Angry Video Game Nerd (AVGN)

- The Nerd turns into a detective to find out why no one would want to play Dick Tracy for the NES, and soon uncovers the many flaws and problems with it. This is Angry Video Game Nerd Episode 56.
A year on from Tim Burton's successful revival of Batman onto the big Screen, Warren Beatty attempted something similar with another comic-book origin detective story, Dick Tracey. Hitting theatres in 1990, it had Beatty on producer, director and acting duty playing the title role. He was joined by a mouth watering cast including Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman, and Madonna with Danny Elfman scoring. With a strong marketing campaign aimed at kids, expectations couldn't be higher.
On its release though, the film received mix reviews, and despite a strong weekend opening, it generally disappointed at the box office. Twenty five years on, it hasn't been able to establish itself with any kind of lasting memory or legacy for the character.
'But what of the game?' I hear you ask.. released by Bandai, (who really should have just stuck to making action figures) The game is both a driving top-down and side-scrolling platformer, putting the player in the role of a detective trying to gather clues to solve a case. Sound good right? If you can find yourself a steerable bullet-proof car, a map, pen and paper, plus hire a NASA scientist to help explain how the health power-ups work, you'll enjoy it just fine ...
The Nerd wasn't so lucky. Better get your banana rain-coat on, the poo is about to hit the fan.

he said one guy....

SkullKid24 or fuck
"Back Off" what are you gonna do? bully him over the internet because an angry nerd said "One guy, no continues?"
AVGN maybe a fictional character, but his pain is real.
That's because James and AVGN are one in the same. He wasn't able to complete the game as a kid due to the frustration. Like many other games in his past.
@@PS3PS2fan Thanks for breaking it down, Sherlock
Yep. his painis is real.
and yet he eventually beat it... :D
He not real??? Momm
I love when the Nerd gets so angry that he clips the audio.
Yea thats something thats missing from the newer ones. The sound production is so good you can hear every yell and scream with perfect clarity. I kinda miss the clipping days.
Poor Nerd
That's the Nerd at his absolute best. Unfortunately, he's kinda mellowed out.
Walter White my words
@@stephenfiler3204 Of course he did, he grew up and has a family.
One of my favorite AVGN rants at the end. I think this is the truly genuinely angriest he gets in the entire AVGN series. You can tell he was really channelling his childhood disappointment in that scene. Well done ep.
Throwing beer on his face lol 😆
I think this episode and the batman one are the angriest he gets. Love it 🤣
well that, or he's just a decent actor.
OmikronWeapon It’s probably both since this game was a part of his childhood, he’s clearly playing it up but some frustration from having dealt with the game when he was younger likely found it’s way in.
along with batman forever.

@@cloudshines812 that's saving money right there
@Drizzt Do'Urden Except you aren't omniscient and can't be expected to know everything. Facts.
It's too bad James ran out of bad games he played as a kid and has a genuine connection with. Those are the best episodes.
The impression I get is that Mike Matei was really the guy who played a much wider spectrum of games, whereas James was pretty much over gaming not long after he got an N64.

The line “I was laughing back then, but I’m not FUCKIN laughing now.” Is so much funnier as a 24 year old than it is to a 12 year old
How did 12 years pass after watching the video when this video is only 10 years old
12 YO's shouldn't watch these imo. They're too juvenile to understand the Nerd and too young to lear AVGN swears. Even at my 33 YO i still can't believe i missed some swears and i'm like WoW.

Unlike his other reviews, I feel like his anger was genuine in this review.
Same with his batman review.
Karate Kid...
Don't Be That Guy- Agreed
plumbers don't wear ties.
I completely agree. The other review where I felt like the anger was genuine is the silver surfer review
I always feel sad for the nerd at the end in this one. I think it's the hardest he's raged in an episode. I realize it's James acting, but it feels so genuine, like the anger and disappointment from when he was a kid bursting out.
vissova Yep, espesially for PLAYING A GAME FOR 20 WHOLE YEARS.
vissova yeah I agree
At least we have La Noire.☺
nah, Batman Forever seemed to make him even angrier
@MannyTheFur I dunno, with the use of the health packs it looks a lot more manageable especially if you can find a solid way to farm them. I'm sure it can be looked up but off hand I'm not certain if a health pack heals you fully - maybe it just heals 2 stars
2:16
"I was laughing back then, but I'm not fucking laughing now!"
There was so much pain in that sentence lol, makes me feel kinda bad for laughing.
Holy Moses. The anger at 14:20 and 9:13 was either genuine or James is a better actor than I give him credit for.
that's not acting at all.
@@999dunkins it is acting. he literally scripts every episode
@@CitizenLily out of personal experiances.
@@CitizenLily
Just because it's "scripted" doesn't mean it's acting. That just means he wrote out what he wanted to say in advance
@@HazeAroundtheWorldThat's still acting. He's acting out a character. He has a similar moment of extreme anger with Board James too in Shark Attack iirc
"This is the reason Game Genie was invented!" The best line by far.
Those goddamn voice cracks at the end kill me every time
Well good thing you're Kenny
At that moment when James got that rock as a kid, he eventually gets rolling rock
“He’s gonna take you back to the past”
Oh yes, now it makes even more sense
The ending makes this review my favorite. It actually seems like this game had actually hurt James and wasted prescious moments of his childhood. I don't think he's ever been this angry in any of his reviews.
Especially when he talks about having played the game for 20 years
the only other one similar to this for anger is Dragons Lair and Batman Forever
If I was James I would tell everyone I knew that when I die have them put on my tombstone,

"One life?! No Continues!?"

Don't forget to add "What were they thinking!?" after that on the tombstone haha

14:24 Still to this day one of the best breakdowns that the AVGN has ever done.
By far my favorite episode. Dont think he was in character for this, i could feel the rage coming through the screen.
"I was laughing back then, but I'm not fucking laughing now"
14:27 is the only time in the whole series that I was worried he actually lost it
+117reconninja I love how the audio gets muffled from how loud he's getting.
the nerd definitely did lol
+117reconninja Well, I guess some things hit you harder than others.
+Valentine Maxwell Ariel Zwe Well you'd lose it too if a video game had that kind of crap in it. Seriously one life no continues? I call shenanigans on that
That's why this is one of my favourite avgn episodes, you can really feel his anger
Damn. AVGN seems legitimately mad and hurt by this game hahah
When was the angriest and most hurt you've ever been by something, which got you hyped and then turned out to be outrageously disappointing? Was it Suicide Squad? New Indiana Jones? New Godzilla? Star Trek Online? Call of Duty or Battlefield sequels? I felt this way about cancelling Megaman Legends and the C&C series.
Don't forget Megaman Online. That looked orgasmically good.
Star Fox Adventures
YoImShepard gamerpoops ftw
Shady Rounds
For me it's BvS. Those characters are iconic and can work masterfully in other forms of media like Injustice, Allstar Superman and Under the Red Hood.
Me: Mum, could you buy L.A. Noire?
Mom: No, we already have L.A. Noire at home.
L.A. Noire at home:
13:39 is my fav nerd moment ever, I’ve cried from laughing about how mad he is.
I've NEVER heard James blow out the microphone levels THIS much, let alone see him THIS legitimately pissed...
it kind of reminded me of Nostalgia Critic's Pearl Harbor Episode
Oh yeah
Romulan64
He was so disappointed that it made him angry and sad at the same time
because james had this as a kid, and could never beat it.
this is a game james legit hates. childhood trauma man.
him tackling it as the nerd is probably just therapy for him.
Watch Superman 64!
That rage was amazing. It's like little James from when he was a kid just released the anger pent up for all those years.
Like when Gohan fought Cell
This is his best episode imo. The anger at the end stemming from having the game as a kid and hating it just makes it so good.
This is definitely one of the best AVGN episodes, probably the highest level of anger depicted too, whether acting or not lol
It looked like he really did get angry at the end
From the Angry Video Game Nerd, to the Raging Video Game Nerd.
Yeah, this was back when he still did a prettttty convincing angry! ...What if the calm intellectual media critic persona we see in his 'more casual' video reviews and things is the mask, and the avatar of rage is his true self? o.O
ooc, james legitimately hates this game. he owned it as a kid and, could never beat it.
that isnt acting on james part. that is pure, unadulterated frustration, built over 20 years, and projected through the nerd persona.
Yeah calm the hell fuck down
If you look at early AVGN reviews, where James is mostly going through stuff he played as a kid (this game included), he sounds much more convincing in his anger. Nowadays the Nerd is clearly just a character, but back then the Nerd was just James pretending to destroy his TV with sonic booms or whatever.
Every kid on the block was running around going "Fred Fuchs!" "Fred Fuchs!" "Fuch This" and "Fuch That!" My Dad said, "Why can't you just call him Fred Fooks?"
Hahaha

It's funny that he gets pissed but it's completely understandable. The NES had a lot of damn near impossible games. That's why there was game genie. This game looks like it would drive me insane.
Sometimes even Game Genie couldn't save you.
The NES has quite the large variety of bad games. Even more so than the Atari 2600.

The iconic scene of this AVGN Episode.
"I was laughing back then but I'm not laughing now!" *gose back to person who gave him a rock's house with a shotgun*
I think this episode was the one he raged the most. He raged more in this than the Godzillia review.

His freak out at Back to the Future 3 on Genesis was pretty good too

Batman forever.
Jesus, that got intense at the end.
Honestly my favorite AVGN review. The commentary was hilarious, it had some good scenes, and my god was his anger genuine, which I really love and wish he implement his anger more in newer reviews.
That’s actually part of the reason why the AVGN wasn’t originally going to be a big thing like it is now. James was just going to focus on the games he played and hated, and that was it. I think it was gonna be like 10 episodes, or something like that.
11 years later I still laugh at the thought at 'DICKARD'.
I actually became an electronics engineer partly because I wanted to understand why so many earlier games were so tough. Turns out a lot of it was early memory coding. Having the game remember such things as continue points, number of lives, and inventory items and item amounts was actually pretty tricky back then. Could be done, but it was only the game developers with the most saavy programmers that could do it.
It's interesting looking back at these games and having some idea what was going on in the programming behind the scenes.
Colias Palaeno Some part of the reason is game makers came straight from arcades, whose philosophy was to be tough enough that you'd have to spend money on them.
@@fernandobanda5734
This is true. Also: if players could beat an NES game in one sitting, they wouldn't be likely to buy it, they'd just rent it once or twice instead. So since these games had such limited memory to work with, they had to make it incredibly difficult to try and extend the length of the game.
Shove it up your ass. Coding lives is one of the easiest things to do in games programming. It's literally a single if statement, a counter, and a decrement. There are many ways to make it harder and more memory intensive, but a basic go-back-to-this-location life system is utterly trivial.
No need to be such a Dickard about it, Angolin. But yes, techtronicman1's comment is only really valid for the earliest, non-CPU-based arcade games - the ones that used TTL logic. The NES had 2K of RAM built in, which is plenty for storing "continue points, number of lives, and inventory items and item amounts". And cartridges could also include additional RAM, up to 1 MB, which would be enough to store the full state of the game, including the positions of every dead enemy body, etc.
Now, the Atari 2600 only had 128 _bytes_ of memory, in which case the argument holds a bit more water, but as shown by games like _Adventure,_ it's perfectly possible to code a relatively complex game state within those limits, if you're careful with your RAM usage. I wouldn't say you had to be one of the best of the best to do this successfully (almost every programmer during that era had to work within pretty severe resource constraints), but yes, you had to be a good coder.
@@angolin9352 Shouldn't the cartriges or the console itself have some sort of memory in order to do that? Like PS did with the memory stick. Instead they used the password system which is pretty much a cheat code as far as I understand. You can enter anyone else's password and it will work, that's basically a code which you say "I had x lives, y powerups and stopped in z in the game" with.
9:10 he doesn't seem to be acting

The cartridge kill at the end of this episode is probably my favorite of the whole series.
I always felt bad for James in this episode. I also have come up with names for his episodes to refer to them by, such as the Crazy Castles review. I call that one the "brutal" episode because he gets his ass handed to him and shit in his face. This video, though, I call the sad episode.
His extreme rage at the end feels like the anger from his childhood coming out. He loved Dickard, but got a fucking rock for Halloween and later, a horrible game. I know he's really just acting and wouldn't go so insane over a video game, but I just feel bad for him.
Vissova Stop.

Clearly, the man was not pleased with the quality of this game.

When the nerd threw his tantrum at the end, I laughed out loud but I understood his pain. It's what I wanted to do as a kid whenever I lost in a game due to design flaws in the game but couldn't because my parents would get mad at me for blowing up over a video game.

14:25 still one of the funniest things on youtube.
Wonder what his neighbours must have thought 😂
"One guy...no continues." That right there is an epic life lesson folks.
So this game is sort of an early LA Noire.
Definitely. The clues, driving, and combat were good in that game. This one was not. Why are there snipers on roofs ? Is this Arkham City ? I used to have to write down the clues which was not acceptable for a detective game. If they left out the snipers and made the clue book and driving better, this could have been a fun game. It is an awful game as it is.
So I guess it is an older, crappier version.
Movie licenses were always terrible back then, for a variety of reasons.
Better than LA Noire.
