  • The 2022 VW Multivan (T7) is NOT based on a van - it uses Volkswagen's MQB car tech to give you a 7-seater van that drives and feels more like a car than ever. But does it work? Join me for a full walkaround of its interior, tech features, driving assistant tools and a whole lot more!

Seeing this from the USA, I’ve always been a van fan. It’s so sad that this type of van isn’t for sale in the US, there’s so much character and versatility in this vehicle - everyone over here wants an SUV/CUV. People wanted them to get away from vans and wagons but now that they are everywhere, they have become dull. In my opinion, vans like this have always been a unique choice, I have 2 kids with a 3rd on the way, this would be PERFECT. Sadly I and other like-minded Americans are penalized by a large buyers market that prefers to use their vehicles as a bland appliance rather than something to take interest in. As a result, the family vehicles in the USA have no personality. Thanks for the review!!

Hi, siting here from New Zealand. We have a family of 2 Little’s and a 12 year old. We currently have a T6 Multivan which my wife LOVES because once you get toddlers seated, the puppy in and everything in, the van still feels relaxed and fun and it has an excellent HK stereo and my girls all just love it.. expensive as it is.

Having four kids under 5 years old, back in 2004 we bought a VW Caravelle (RHD swb) as our family car, since then we’ve moved to France and had another T4 (LHD lwb) and then a T5 (4motion LHD lwb ) they were all great family cars and coped with huge amounts of luggage on regular cross Europe holiday trips. But now the kids are all older and have moved out. If I had 4 small kids and two double buggies I’d definitely get the petrol T7 lwb - the auto gearbox and lane assitance/cruise control would be very welcome.

Nice review. I need to replace my 21-year old Jaguar S-type and need room for my wheelchair. Another plus, now that I'm disabled, is that there's an option to have electrically-adjustable seats in the front.
The VW Multivan is now top of my list. It is well built and very versatile. All the rear seats can be removed too. I especially like how VW has created more room in the cabin with the novel gear shifter and the electronic parking brake.
VW just needs to resolve the laggy screen on the infotainment system. I doubt that the latest software upgrade makes much difference - it requires better hardware for the processor and screen.
Look forward to seeing what mods become available through the tuning companies: some window shades would be nice for overnight camp-overs. A little wooden dash trim to embellish the cabin, and some sound-deadening to help with the noise on motorways.

As a T6 Caravelle owner (Gen Six 204) I feel it's a very hard act to follow, but despite my concerns summed up by your Sharon comment it looks appealing. The extra seat flexibility (really only matching the 2003 Espace) is definitely a positive over the T6 with the rear bench, but then the bench doubles as a bed :)

Really like it, despite the performance which tbh isn’t really that relevant in a “car” like this, but now that the prices are out I’m disappointed. Once you’ve factored metallic paint and a spare wheel you’re easily over £60k for the hybrid (the only model currently available in the UK, and probably the only one I’d want) which given 10 years ago a cloth seated base Carravelle was around £30k is too much. Prices have just got silly these days.

    Interesting review.
00:23 You're supposed to pronounce it "folksvagen"; NOT "volkswagen".
    05:05 Ha ha ha!
I'm planning to go to a dealer to test-drive this model before the end of this month (Feb. 2022). It doesn't cost me anything, save for the trip, so why not. But I don't think I will purchase one as I think it's far too expensive for its utility. Price at this side of the North Sea starts at around 700k. To put in perspective, I expect to make on average around 25 k a month this year, after taxes and expenses.
This model is marketed with an electric range of 48 kms. Not min. but max. That's without a trailer. So you're looking at driving mostly on petrol on longer trips. You're probably better off buying a used diesel powered vehicle. There's no use in dragging a heavy battery pack along. At least go for the diesel engine and long chassis option.
Who wants to wait 45 min. to charge the battery and then drive 45 min. on electricity before the combustion engine starts automatically? After 1,5 hr. that engine is likely to have cooled down again. And you don't want to start a combustion engine that isn't run warm without preheating it, now, do you?
And driving a fully loaded Multivan (esp. with a fully loaded trailer as well) with an 1,4 L petrol engine sounds questionable at best. My Transporter has a 2,0 L (140 PS) TDI engine and that's not too much. It's a two seater van equipped with features like 6 speed manual gearbox, long wheel base, glass fibre roof, LED headlights, Webasto diesel-powered pre-heater, front wheel drive and no separate electric motor/battery pack, it's net weight is actually less than 1,8 tons. Yet it cost around 450 k when I purchased it brand new eight years ago. With rear seats, four wheel drive and automatic transmission (180 PS) the price would easily pass 1 million, and even more for a more luxurious Caravelle or Multivan; not to mention for petrol model. That was, needless to say, totally out of the question. I've measured fuel consumption as low as 0,49 L/mile on a long trip and 0,54 L/mile on a short trip. I usually drive it in 70 km/h (5th gear), increasing to 80 km/h (6th gear) on the best roads (double carriageways/central divider) but not on steep ascends.
Why would you drive as fast as 70 mph (10:12)?
After being fortunate the past couple of years, I have more available funds than ever (currently 1,9 million in bank deposits and cash minus debt). Now I'm considering selling one of my cars and trading in the other for a Caravelle/Transporter/Multivan or perhaps Hiace/Proace or Vito/Viano, with rear seats, a trailer hitch, (at least 7 speed) automatic transmission and cruise control, as well as both electric and diesel-powered engine/coupé heater (unless it's fully electric). Preferably not electrically operated doors or parking brake, adaptive cruise control or glass/sun/panorama roof, and certainly not a pure (not plug-in) hybrid, as that sucks.
I've been considering the fully electric 9 seater Proace Verso, but it's max. range of 316 kms. with at least 42 hours charging time (by normal wall outlet) isn't reassuring, considering our climate and our poor electricity supply. So far this year, in my home power has been out about a dozen times in six weeks.
I'd be remiss not to mention the fact that they (believe it or not) put salt on the roads, and, as we all know, salt and water doesn't mix well with electricity and metals. That would probably would destroy the electric sliding door motors the first winter. Though I image driving in the dark with heads-up display (10:35) might cause road rage already after a few minutes.

As a 14 year VW Caravelle owner and owner of new T6.1's. What you are looking at is "new coke" this is VW reinventing something that wasn't broken and destroying it. Notice tiny boot space - can you fit shopping in there for a large family? Nope its too small unless you spec the longer one which will overhang a standard space. No leg room for adults in the back especially when seats in the rear are facing. Dash is useless and no storage. The A pillars obstruct the view. VW have missed "vw life" crowd, people with a family who want a car and and van. This isn't that, this is a mess sometyhing VW will regret It wont sell, they will never get people out of the transporter into this. They will only when they bring out the transit version which again wont sell.. This will go down as a flop alongside the VW Fox and Polo Saloon. Pay more for a smaller, less practical and poorly designed Sharan....

    • @josefv8708
      @josefv8708 Před 2 lety

Hmm, with this they can replace the unreliable engines...which are defect too often. The construction of the hood is a nightmare for anyone who needs to repair anything.
The T7 uses MQB and they can add all new technology to this car, like for any VW Group car in the near future. For the T6 Line, they have to implement most all again.
And the T6.1. is still in production since it sits on the commercial platform, which is needed for crafts worker, too....at the Moment it is simply a matter of taste and I don't think they both have the very same target consumer.

IMO this car is a complete fail from the engine POV. I have test driven thy hybrid one and it is seriously underpowered for it's size and weight.

    I am confuse 🤓
Isn’t this a bit like a less good people carrier?
‘People’ stopped buying those, as they preferred less practical, worse to drive and more expensive 4x4 everythings!
Even though this is an MQB thing, will VW labelling it a ‘Van’ make it cool to some folks?
Enjoyed the nonsense as usual anyway Tim 👍🏻

T6 is still sold as is! If you like it...buy this.
T7 is based on MQB and you get rid of this unreliable engines, which fail very often in the T6 line..and you get access to latest Technology, which will be most likely never adopted to the T6 line...like Travel Assist; Matrix LED...like it very much in my Passat GTE.
And as you called it...T6 is a Transporter...T7 is more like a big car and hopefully it drives like this!? Thought about to buy a California...but driving like in truck was not my taste. Mercedes V-Class (Marco Polo...a camper, tooo) drives more like a big station wagon for example.

Looks practical but oh so bland. No wonder VW is offering two tone variants. Styling apes latest Golf Mk3 8 ie caught somewhere between Golf Mk7 and ID3. Not ugly, but worse than before... where's the inspiration? Still I guess no one will buy a van for looks.
