Pattern
Start with multiples of 4 plus 3 chains
Row 1: DC in 4th chain from hook, 1dc in each ch. across till end
Row 2: turn your work, Ch3 (counts as 1st dc ), skip next 3 dc, *[ work the following in the 4th dc (dc,ch1,dc,ch1,dc,ch1,dc,ch1,dc), skip next 3 dc], repeat this pattern till the last dc, 1 dc in the last dc
Row 3: Ch1, turn your work, 1 sc in next space (between 1st dc & repeated pattern from the previous row), then work 2 SC in every ch1 space across the whole row till the end, work 1 dc in 2nd ch of next Ch3 from the previous row

They aren't dc, it's more like the Portuguese stitch. As you go through 1 loop, then 2 and 2 loops.

For directions, thanks to Mariam Habashy. She wrote out the instructions to this beautiful pattern. The stitch is like dc but not quite. Start as a dc, go through 1 loop, yo go through 2 loops, yo and go through 2 loops.
Written instructions would be nice to refer to

Chain of fives
-chain four
-into the fourth chain, one double crochet
-double crochet into the second chain and continue this until you’ve run out of chains to crochet into.
-chain three and flip
- third row
-double crochet into the fifth chain
-chain one and double crochet into the same chain five times separated with a one chain between.
-double crochet into the fourth chain and chain one. Repeat until you have five in the same chain.
-continue this into every fourth chain until you have four chains left.
-double crochet into fourth chain and flip.
- fourth row
-single crochet between each empty space of every double crochet. (Don’t know how to specify this better, sorry…)
-(What I did to make the shells more pronounced): crochet into the space between the double crochet and the shell.
-if you followed the video, crochet into the last double crochet.
-double crochet into the second to last chain that connects the second and theirs row.
-(for the pronounced shell): once you single crochet into the last space between the shell and the boarder, double crochet into the chain connecting the second and third row.
-chain three then flip
- continue row three and four until the dimensions of your project are complete.
