    The interesting thing about the Oscar award is that in the first 10 years of this award, the list of winners is provided to the newspapers to publish it at 11 o'clock in the evening of the ceremony. But this method was announced after the Los Angeles Times announced the winners before the ceremony in 1940. Since then, the winners of this place have been placed in special sealed envelopes.

    • @allaboutmelz
      @allaboutmelz Před 10 měsíci +1

      Lumet is only really known for the main five he's made, all his others are completely obscure and I would be surprised if 10 people even knew three of them. Kubirck only made 10 films before his passing, so It's hard to give somebody an award with such little credit to their name.
      Lumet was unfortunate in the case everytime a film of his released, other amazing films released the same year and were arguably better.
      12 Angry men *lost to* The Bridge on the River Kwai (no chance)
      Serpico *Lost to* The Sting (also no chance)
      Murder on the Orient Express *Lost to* The Godfather Part II (there was literally not an inkling of a chance for him here)
      Dog Day Afternoon *Lost to* One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest (no chance again)
      Network *Lost to* Rocky (This might've been his only chance)
      Kubrick on the other hand was a terrible person, and his extreme perfectionism drove every actor nuts, making an unknown amount of people quit the film they were working on. He was the recipient of multiple razzies and for good reason. Though I do think he should've won for Dr. Strangelove or 2001.

Also Eastwood is one of the few people on the list who was not a trained director ie, didn't go to film school. What a guy, the likes of which will probably be never seen again.

    I think what people forget with these Oscars is that the Oscars ceremony each year existed in a Vacuum the year it was presented or, at least, the era.
    People here were right to point out certain directors never getting Oscars. But I think people look at these awards holistically. Voters vote at a singular point in time.
    Example people will ask why Tarantino didn't win for Pulp Fiction, perhaps one of the most influential movies of all time. Voters were looking at Forrest Gump which at, the time, was a popular movie, a huge box-office hit, and at a time when America was relatively at a high point so people were more receptive to Feel Good pro-American movies.
