    "The Divine One." "Sassy." There will never be another one like her. Sarah's technique, her ability to "slide" onto the note and hold it, hanging slightly behind the beat just CANNOT be taught! Add to that her rich contralto voice with its range and that controlled vibrato - a voice like none other.
    How fortunate that this performance from more than 60 years ago was caught and preserved for future generations to appreciate!

    Sarah was the Charlie Parker of vocalists. I love Whitney and Aretha, but they could never do what SV did. She had everything -- unmatched control, that vibratos, totally insane range, tone, so many colors and textures, dynamics, musicality equal to the best horn players who ever lived (fact), and she worked with material that had been done by a million others and always managed to make it her own. That is MF skill.

    Massive range. Amazing breath control. Could make any song legitimate. The Great Sarah Vaughn. She is in a class by herself.

      I finally, finally see what the hype is about her. OMG. Her voice is so phenomenal!! She has the most charming and warm presence on stage. I can only imagine what it was like to hear her sing in her prime. Some of the greatest voices came from her decade. I cant wait to do more reactions by her.

    Sublime, pure, rich, silk vocals and performance. She is a legend. And yes...that band was high quality also. Man, my older brother played me her version of George Gershwin's "I Won't Say I Will But I Won't Say I Won't"...and I became smitten with her voice. Check it out man.

    She is simply the best of the best. She could have been an opera singer. Her band was also the best of the best. The bassist was very young here who is still with us performing around the world. The legendary Buster Williams.

    *~ Sarah Vaughan is my absolute favorite female singer (Barbra Streisand is right up there as well). I missed the opportunity to see Sarah perform what was to be her last concert in NYC several months before she passed away, so a regret of mine. She was superlative and sublime; a "singer's singer" and revered by musicians. The very best of the 20th Century ~*

    "The Define One" made this Erroll Garner classic, her own also made famous by the man that has the most popular version Johnny Mathis. But this is Sarah's spot light and she handles is beautifully.

    Thanks for reacting to Sarah Vaughn. What an incredible performance! Matchless. She was so charismatic and humble. She shared that she was nervous with the audience because she developed a cold on the day she was being recorded and televised. She was known for her VOICE and to have a cold was going to limit her vocally. Sarah Vaughn was one of the greatest vocalist of all time! They called her the "Divine Sarah" and 'Sassy". Her voice was like an instrument. She was a vocal stylist and painter of words. She had an incredible tone, articulation, and vibrato. The resonance! She was well celebrated in her day. However, there was such racism and colorism, she did not receive as much television airtime and opportunities commercially as others such as Ella Fitzgerald the Queen of Scat and Lena Horne who were lighter in complexion. Sarah Vaughn also scatted. She was well received overseas. She was loved here as well. Just an incredible God-given gift and she mastered her craft! It's too bad she isn't as celebrated and recognized today. She is not well known outside of Jazz circles. She's up in the top 20 voices and vocalist of all time, maybe the top 10. This is just pure vocals without mastering and auto-tuning. What a voice and what a wonderful person! Thanks again for your reaction

    About Time . Ms Vaughn sang the Heavens down and they'd lift her right back up,, there's no one like the original Divine One Ms Sarah Vaughn,, and is just me or does she favor here Naturi Naughton. If this is what you sound like with a cold well everybody else just go home.

    The singers back in those days had around 10,000 hours of training, whether it be church singing, school music programs/classes or other community arts and performing programs before they even reached the national stage. If you listen closely to Sarah Vaughn and other singers of her generation (Ella Fitzgerald, Mahalia Jackson, Peggy Lee, and later on Aretha Franklin, Shirly Bassey, Barbara Streisand, Gladys Knight, Karen Carpenter, etc.) its clear that she could have sung opera as well. When public schools de-emphasized music programs and the government stopped funding such extracurricular activities you began to see a true drop in singing talent. Today's singers are no where close to the talent of the generation on the 50s, 60s and 70s singers. Not even close. What we have today are "pop" stars not real true singers of immense vocal talent. A few, like Lady Gaga and Adele, can truly sing but they always seem to be having voice problems every so often that causes them to take time off from performing. As you can see from this video, Sara Vaughn had a cold and still sounded like a million dollars. Her vocal chords were trained from thousands of hours of practice and rehearsal before she hit it big.

    I haven't watched yet but I Am So Excited.
    I've liked a lot of singers, but there are only two voices that stop me in my tracks every single time: Lara Fabian & Sarah Vaughan. Masters.
    So excited to watch your discovery of Sassy.

    • @DoggieFosters
      @DoggieFosters Před 2 lety

      You would love her "Maria" also from this xhow. It's a song I had always HATED to be honest, and cool jazz isn't actually my favorite, but Sassy makes me come back to her Maria over and over. Love her masterful control. Contraltos are my weakness anyway.
      If you're ever interested in the ONLY soprano who has ever hit my ear like liquid velvet, with unbelievable technique and performance chops, Id love to see your reaction to Lara Fabian. She's a bit of a vocal chameleon, so I'll just rec her Je Suis Malade from the concert From Lara With Love (vid with "French & English subtitles). It was my gateway drug to her. Stunning.
      This was fun. Off to see more of your chanel. 🖖🏾
