  • During confirmation hearings this week for Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett, Democratic Senator Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island opted not to ask the judge any questions. Instead, he gave a 30-minute presentation on how right-wing groups, including the Federalist Society and Judicial Crisis Network, use dark money to shape the nation's judiciary. We air excerpts from his presentation and get reaction from Kristen Clarke, president and executive director of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.

The system needs an overhaul. The supreme court nominees need to have a mandatory minimum (6 months, 2 years?) investigation and public hearing period followed by a public election process. The number of people and cases in the country have increased so the number of judges should increase accordingly. Campaigning should not be allowed. A vacancy in the lineup should never be a problem that needs to be filled immediately as judges, like all employees need to take vacations, sick days, leaves of absence, etc.. With enough justices to handle the load of cases wait times would be shorter and the perceived need to rush through a judicial candidate eliminated.

5 to 4 Supreme Court decisions along partisan lines? Over 80 times? This is NOT democracy. Schemes, covert behind the scenes actions using dark - NO ... DIRTY MONEY to garner undue influence! Talk about rigging, conflicts of interest, and fascist extremism made legitimate by an institution that was designed to work as a check and balance on POWER by any one branch of government over another. This is NOT democracy. The Democrats have a big job ahead of it fixing this BIG, BIG problem created by fascists for the benefit of fascists and the corporate agenda of the few. Deregulation means the environment loses, people lose, and only those who would economically rape and pillage this country win. John F. Kennedy said something to this affect ... "those who make social evolution impossible, make violent revolution inevitable." This is a sad state of affairs in the U S of A. It should be alarming to every freedom loving American, regardless of party affiliation. Bravo Mr. Whitehouse. Reserve a seat for him as a future president in the oval office.
