  • Well I've started the seeds, transplanted seedlings, put them outdoors, cared for them and now it is finally time to enjoy the fruit! My annual tomato trial looks at the varieties I've grown and tastes them to see which are winners and which are losers. We have four this year (two did not make it):
    1. Edox (F1 Hybrid, Indeterminate cherry type)
    2. Icicle Candy Dwarf (Determinate, seeds were gifted)
    3. Jolene (F1 Hybrid, Determinate, medium fruit)
    4. Harvest Moon (F1 Hybrid, Indeterminate, gold beefsteak)

my 8yr old Addy was watching and her commentary was the red cherry with the orange inside looked like candy, the regular red one is a "classic tomato" and those big orange ones looked like mini pumpkins, we both enjoyed the video

Haven't heard of any of those varieties though I don't grow many hybrids. I used to shy away from them but now I'm more open to growing them and usually grow a few but I typically grow varieties I get from seed swaps and not many people are swapping hybrids. Btw, just planted my tomatoes yesterday. We are really behind this season. Been getting more rain than usual for this time of year. Better weather is here finally.

Sorry to hear about your garden but makes me feel a little better about mine in central TX. Weather and heat and tornadoes took most of mine out. My tomatoes did not flower hardly at all! I’m assuming the heat 🤷‍♂️ keep up the great content!

9a SETX backyard grower here. Picked the last of my tomatoes today. Too much rain this year. Had good production considering the weather. The Cherokee purple outstanding flavor. The regular hybrids are good also, just prefer the heirlooms. Luckily the blister bugs weren’t too bad this year. Heirloom and hybrids produced some slicers bigger than my hands. Which we have enjoyed on BLTs several times. Thanks for the different varieties taste test.

I got a late start on my tomatoes this year and just now have fruit ripening in Willis Texas on Lake Conroe. I planted a few Mountain Queen which are an indeterminate hybrid for the fist time. They are about 2 oz and perhaps the sweetest maters I've ever grown. Anyone else grown these?

Good to know. I'm in 9b SE Texas and the two that did best for me were Azoychka (really flavorful yellow) and Supremo Bush Roma. The romas was the strongest and successful tomato I've grown in 10 years. Stink bugs and hornworms bothered every tomato but this one .

The bugs are horrible this year. I pulled out two Cherokee Purple and two Barred Boar already 😢 just got a few off each plant. My Amis Paste, San Mariano are doing well and Juliet still a winner.

It's been bad in this area in regards to rain and VERY moist air. I don't have tomatoes growing and really just got started because the ground was too wet and I had to do landscaping to put in a raised bed. More often than not the air is a little more dry by now and we may still get some storms but this has been a crazy amount, and I know that sets up a more favorable environment for molds and fungus and different insects. I assumed because I'm getting a late start that I'd need a shade cloth and insect netting but I didn't assume I'd need to keep rain off the bed too.

The millennial gardener channel recommended a burpee hybrid called Brandy Boy for beefsteaks that perform well in hot humid climates and taste like a Brandywine. I haven't grown it, but i bought a packet of these seeds last week. So I'm going to try Brandy boy next year since i have no room for additional tomato plants.

Nice to compare with Houston. Austin here. Got my tomatoes in the first of Mar 2024 and am at peak harvest now (1st week of June). The heat dome came a month earlier than last year, so it's a race. 'Jolene' sounds like my 'Carmello'. We grow 'Carmello' every year because it is the most "tomato-y" tomato...perfect slicer for a burger or a BLT and consistently best flavor. I'm interested in 'Harvest Moon'. Sounds similar to 'Heart of Ashgabat' which is my favorite this year and last; it has a mild but distinctive taste and great texture. Very meaty almost like a mango (but not mushy or mealy). I've made notes of your choices and might try both 'Jolene' and 'Harvest Moon' in 2025. Almost forgot...my one crazy plant was 'Purple Calabash' which is close to being a wild tomato. Tastes like tomato sauce cooked with wine vinegar. Very seedy, thin skinned (the only tomato that's gotten sun scald) and spreads like wild. Does not want to be contained. It's the only tomato still flowering in this heat...and seems to be setting fruit.

A great taste test as always. I've grown six varieties of Dwarf Tomato Project tomatoes this year and last. My repeat winner has been the Dwarf Johnson's Cherry. They have been resistant to disease and the extreme conditions in Central Arkansas Zone 8a. The rest of tomatoes varieties have been good, but no others from last year made the cut this year. Still waiting on the other varieties this year.

Mostly, here in Austin tomatoes have been disappointing this year due to the rain and gloomy weather. They're just sort of watery and bland. Now that it's really hot, I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that enough set that I can get some that are better. Summer Cider is by far the best one so far - big, yellow beefsteak that was all meat and not too acidic. The plant is outgrowing even the cherries, and is still healthy. I'm hoping to get more production off it soon! If so, it's a keeper.
