The romance of Rennala and Radagon seems so romantic, but I suspect Radagon of something less than fidelity. And what he does with his dog seems to show it.

Is it within a respectable dog owner’s responsibility to teach their dog glintstone sorcery? Asking for a friend
People love dogs when they do sword tricks, so I don't see why magic sword tricks would be any different.
Yes but you need to teach them proper uses for it. I had far too many talks with neighbors concerning run ins with their cats or damage to trees due to squirrels
they are born knowing magic so yes it is so they dont accidently hurt themselves or others.
Just letting you know, I read this in SB!Knux's voice, and nothing is better. XD
@@AngelicDirt i always forget that he’s my pfp until someone points it out lol
It's such a relief that this series wasn't abandoned.
This is THE best souls analysis content, not because it serves you lore on a platter, or because the lore is the most accurate, but because you experience the game the way it was designed to be experienced, and combine that with your excellent media literacy and treating the subject like the serious art it is.
Outstanding work, and I cannot wait for more.
Like I’ve said before, T B Skyen is a cut above in terms of intellect.
Thats such a cringe take, there’s no “one way” its designed to be played, its a completely open world game they literally designed it for you to experience how you want to
@@PeteGlobbs I'm not OP so maybe I'm off base here, but I believe they meant that Skyen is playing the game the way it was designed in that he's experiencing it blind. He doesn't do external research on the lore before playing; he pieces the lore together through experience. I think that's what OP meant because the sentence prior explicitly references the lore aspect of this game.
It was such a joy to see this video.
Didn't know how much I missed the Boss Design series till I watched this premier.
Thank you for making it. It's always a great highlight for an evening for me.
The way the cat ring works in this game and the other games i've played is that if you would take damage from a fall, you take no damage instead, but if the fall would kill you, it still kills you either way. So its good for breaking falls and keep your health, but you cant use it to just drop into any hole (as this particular ring's previous bearer likely had to find out the hard way lol)
In Ds2 I believe it only Reduces the fall damage you take, and could be stacked with other items that would reduce fall damage, but fall damage in general worked differently in 2.
In DS1 there was no equivalent item if memory serves, but we did have the Rusted Iron ring to stop certain terrain types like waist deep liquid from slowing your movement, something that frankly could have been handy in DS2/3 and this game.
As far as I understand, there's a certain threshold of falling height where you'll die upon hitting the ground no matter your health.
I believe it's calculated by how much time you are in the air, meaning that there are falls where double-jumping on Torrent can kill you.
@@Laterose15 yep. it's 20 meters or farther.
the long-tailed cat talisman is functionally worthless, because the way it works is this:
up to 16 meters of falling distance, you take no damage, just increasing stagger.
between 16 and 20 meters, you take increasing damage as you approach the 20 meter mark.
at 20 meters or more, you die.
what the talisman does is remove the damage from the 16-20 meter section, meaning falls become a coinflip, either they kill you or they don't.
Ring of fall damage immunity, not ring of fall death immunity.
THE ELDEN RING, THE ELDEN RING IS REAL
CAN WE GET MUCH HIGHER (so high)
PRAISE THE ELDEN RING!!!
OOOOOOOOOOO
The fact that he was so close to getting transported to volcano manor but didnt, makes me really mad xD
Marika/Radagon is such a fun topic within Elden Ring's Setting, I can't wait to see Skyen learn more about these two.
Maybe I’m just a sucker for love stories and tragedy, but by far my favourite lore backstory is Rennala Radagon and their family.
@@featherdragon7894 made her fall in love with him then did a jamie lannister and ran off to marry his other half. then they get into a huge fight.
Love how you use "/" instead of "and" that's some heavy spoiler
@@khairaniabdullah4453 sure but extremely subtle if you're not thinking about it
@@mckinneym.2743Not really lmao
1:01:22 We were one damage tick away from greatness.
Truly a great miss. I knew nothing was going to happen because he wouldn't have made it to the titular Red Wolf if that had happened, but I didn't expect him to come so close.
Yes I was so sad when i saw this
so close :(
Holy crap the wolf being in the debate parlor suddenly makes sense!!!!!
Present TB being passive-aggressive at past-TB in the floating text.
And then waking up after a year-long nap to start the design discussion.
My favorite part of the rolling ball on the stairs trap is its not infinite boulders they've just got a portal at the drop that catches the same rock and drops it down the stairs again out another portal its amazing. Queen Rennala got the dog in the divorce is the lore of the Red Wolf. As for the bones in the debate parlor they are probably sorcerers seeing as how they locked Rennala away her dog is not going to be happy and kill them.
The multiple head masks are in homage too those twin headmasters.
Between episode 3 and 4 of this series, I binged practically every episode of the Boss Design of Bloodborn, which is now one of my favorite thing ever posted on this god forsaken website.
This gave me a new appreciation for the game, your thought process is always a joy to follow.
I'm glad it's back :3
The main thing that I think supports the idea that the wolf's glintstone sorcery is a reflection of Radagan's fond memories is the Memory Stone Pendant. He's forced to leave, and leaving behind the wolf with a *pendant* full of memories is a way of honouring someone. If you're making a mean guard dog, you don't need to give it a reminder of why it needs to guard a place. But one that's made as a momento to someone you, at least one some level, cared about, giving that dog a momento of positive memories that it uses to then cast sorceries wielded by the love you had to leave? it's powerful stuff.
Oh god, YES. I am so happy to see this series return. I love your character design analysis, not to mention your sense of humor. You just earned a Patreon subscription. Please, keep up the good work.
Wow, thank you!
I always imagined the red wolf as a gift but after this video it makes more and more sense to me at least that it was a threat like when Radagon left he left the red wolf as a way to say “don’t fuck with me” at least that’s how I see it now
If it was left as a gift _and_ a threat, it parallels empyrean shadows no? Maliketh and Blaidd were both gifted to Marika and Ranni respectivaly to act as loyal servants, but also to turn against them should they ever act against the Greater Will.
Perhaps the Red Wolf is Radagon's version of that. A guardian for Raya Lucaria yes, but also a metaphorical gun to the head. That would also imply Radagon as seeing himself as equal to - or synonymous with - the Greater Will. Which, does seem to fit with his view of Golden Order fundamentalism and him trying to reforge the Elden Ring.
@@cruye9633 amazing point
Now that you mention it Radagons wolf is a perfect in game metaphor for a puppet monarch used to control a potentially problematic neighboring kingdom.
I like to think that the Red Wolf and Blaidd sat in on all the academy lectures.
I love when Skyen reads this deeply into attack patterns. This kind of deep crunchy analysis just feels *right* for a director and game series that so consistently works game mechanics into its story.
1:30:30 🤣😂 I love Skyen when he goofs around.
"A YEAR!" Yeah man that's how long it's been lol!
But in all seriousness I'm happy to see that this Boss Design of Elden Ring wasn't dropped as I initially thought. I can't wait to see the rest, and maybe more playthrough of the game on the game channel.
Imo „may the tides of history wash gently over us all“ is such a graceful phrase. I really like hearing it time and time again.
Recognition and praise of the turtle pope somewhat makes up for there not being an Ebrietas episode in the bloodborne boss design series
Huzzah, so glad to see this again.
The read of the Red Wolf being used as a way to cripple the Academy's attempt to self govern is really fascinating. I admit I usually have a far kinder read of the wolf's master then that read would promote, but it is a curious location for the Wolf.
And on the note of the sorceries being used as a support for the physical prowess has an interesting parallel in the form of Incantations that Radagan uses. His Golden Order Fundmentalism requires both faith and intellect, suggesting that he's used what he learned as being Carian Consort, to help shape his version of golden order Incantations
1:36:39 COUNTER! If you go back down the road from where the first gate sigil spit you out at, you can find a merchant just chilling. He sells the Blue Cloth set and the recipe for Sleep Grease.
…of course, he might also have gotten a glintstone key.
I always assumed he was kind of a reverse Thops situation. Just so happened to have travelled to the academy to trade with the sorcerers before the sigils went up, then was either trapped inside or decided "man this Shattering thing is bad news, maybe I'll wait it out in here."
I still hold the opinion that your boss designs series in total is probably one of the best playthrough ideas and executions on the whole platform, so i am so happy to see it in my feed again.
AAAAA AMAZING WORK! So happy to see this again! (Not that your other works aren't amazing they ARE) but the Boss Designs series was what led me to your channel and I am so happy to see this again!
Im so glad you compared the wolf to Sif on more than surface level! The whole interpretation is incredibly interesting, especially with you hinting at a possibly abusive or toxic relationship between renalla and radagon, which I havent really seen anyone else make. I cant wait for you to learn more about them
For the toxic relationship part, I feel like that reading is not THAT out there. Iirc Zullie the Witch (another soulsborne youtuber) has some interesting thing to say about Rennala in particular, and the meaning of her amber egg. Nothing concrete of course, but definitely no unfounded theories on that channel.
we're back bois and the quality of edits and analysis is better than ever
The Red Wolf of Radagon is a union-busting lapdog of the golden order
Yes!😂
And Radagon is the type of ex that leaves his pets behind, causing you to have to take care of it despite a busy schedule
Radagon, projecting his voice so it can be heard over Rennala's hearbroken sobs: And be sure he gets several hours of exercise a day, he's from a very high-energy breed! Also you're running low on his shampoo, I'll leave you the card for dog salon I always buy it from! Don't just buy something from petsmart, he has delicate AND oily skin, he can't do sulfites! Also be sure to brush him out every day when he's shedding! Damn I reeally should've written this down. Hold on, let me grab a rune or something . . .
Also aside from what I've already commented (engagement goo weewoo) I wanted to say that your boss designs videos were my first encounter with proper deep art analysis on things that interested me A LOT.
Interpretation of the abstract can be challenging sometimes for the uninitiated and as a musician, I never really got into it, as my conservatory teachers gave the impression that if you don't "get it" and aren't enjoying the music, you're simply missing something, and it caused me to perceive such abstract music as elitist drivel
But in these video you've consistently stated that what you observe is simply YOUR reading (as seen in the many meanings videos). I learned from your videos that visual art analysis (and I've gone on to use this with music as well) is not about digging deep enough to find the RIGHT answer. It's about the subjectivity, and what you see in it. You dig deep and explore the art, to see what it does for YOURSELF and discussing this with other people who've done this is BEYOND fascinating!
So thank you for making me a better artist, and broadening how I engage with art.
TL;DR Skyen you changed how I engage with Art, so thank you!
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa finally!!!!
I'm obsessed with your boss design videos and i counted the days for when the the next episode of eldem ring will be realesed. Please don't over work your self over this series this game is an experience and it would be a shame if your work will ruin it.
The ring does make you immune to fall damage, it's just that any fall >20m doesn't actually deal damage, it just kills you.
Yeah... it's almost completely useless since the difference between "take some damage" and "instant death" is tiny in this game. I'm almost positive it originally WAS created to make you fully immune to fall damage, only this made skipping the game's intended paths far too easy.
Personally, I wouldn't made it extend how far you can fall by quite a bit, but then stuck it in the Haligtree, so by the time the player finds it they've already explored most of the game's "proper" paths.
hey! Just waned to tell you I am super happy to see the boss design-series return! I've actually found you through your soulsborne videos and love your way to analyse characters, area design and underlying themes in games. Huge thank you for taking on Elden Ring again, even though it is such an insanely huge game. But also please take care of yourself, burnout is no joke and no one will blame you for taking all the time you need
39:54 you see, in the lore (trust me, it is in the lore) he is a GREAT mimic and always wanna people to see how good he is
Awesome reading! But you did miss that the wolf does have a charge up spell attack. That it used at the 1:15:15 ish marker. The wolf stands still for a moment and charges a spell in the mouth before jumping up and blasting it at you.
Yeah... and then it follows that blast up with a big physical attack, exactly like it does with the glintstone blades :)
Truly an Elden Ring moment
I honestly love your editing style; a nice balance of humor and gameplay. Even when covering a game that's been out for a while now I still enjoy seeing your first impressions and you, with only what you know, create your theories. It may be well known the things you talked about Radagon but your idea on him being the source of Lucaria's fall and only caring for glintstone magic as a means to an end were very interesting. There are a lot of things out there where this kind of examination may be unwarranted but Fromsoft always seems to be the exception. Too many things end up making too much sense. I eagerly aware your next insight.
the fall damage thing is very funny, because the game seems to have an universally unsurvivable distance where you don't receive "fall damage" as much as just get turned into paste, so according to the ring, everything below that is fair game, but as you pointed out, the person using it probably also misinterpreted and found their ridiculous demise
it's a difference that's specially funny in elden ring because that unsurvivable threshold will mess you up so many times in a playthrough, like from soft is just slightly readjusting it every time you die
I'm so happy the series is back! It's been my all time favorite on this channel. Thank you for pulling through after a whole year, that must have been a whole awful lot of built-up frustration and guilt.
I love (and second) the interpretation of the wolf as a jailer, it seems a lot more fitting with the whole tragedy and heartbreak thing this series is known for. I'm really looking forward to to future episodes, and, of course, the streams!
I just started watching this series of yours and you in general a couple of days ago, and I am very relieved to hear that this series is continuing because your analyses are great! I look forward to the next episode ❤.
The absolute madman with truly ALL OF THE INSIGHT HAS DONE IT AGAIN!!! Never has a wait been more worth it, omg. Skyen just never misses. To say I'm hyped for the continuation of this series is the understatement of the century. I'm more hype for this than the DLC!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Welcome back to the Lands Between, oh great tarnished Skyen, thou who would be Elden Lord.
It's nice to see this return finally after such a long hiatus. One that was well deserved and well needed after just how much you produced, your sanity is far more critical than a Boss Designs episode could ever be.
I do hope you decide to cover more Elden Ring Lore / Bosses / Theories when you feel the pull of the game again! Love hearing your thoughts on things and your reactions to new core information like the Wolf being not from the academy changing the entire context of the character. Great stuff!
I like the ambíguos role of both the Red Wolf.. and Radagon
I rarely react on youtube videos but I must admit you've truly surpassed my expectations! Although the game has been out for a long time and I've consumed so much lore and interpretative content, you've still managed to point out and call out aspects of a boss that I've never heard anyone talking about, pure by its design. This is the reason, in my opinion, your boss design videos are the creme de la creme of fromsoft content. Keep up the good job! And glad to see you back :)
So glad to see a new Elden Ring boss designs come out! Thanks for continuing to make such great design videos they are very good!
Fun fact: The Red Wolf is a reusal of assets from Dark Souls 3 that just didn't make it into the game completely, like quite a few things in Elden Ring. In this case it's the Old Wolf of Farron, "emaciated" covenant leader of the Watchdogs of Farron. The spectral curved greatsword seen with the Red Wolf is also given by the Old Wolf to the player when ranked up. I mention this because if you recall the Abyss Watchers also hail from Farron, who were also based off the legend of Artorias and share in the wolf blood. The connection to Sif isn't farfetched even in a game development way.
OH MY GOD ITS HPPENING. EVERYONE STAY CALM
I am SO excited to see this series return! Your ability to come up with deep and interesting analysis to what would otherwise be very simple designs never fails to impress me. Can't wait for the next episode!
Edit: I am also wishing you tons of luck with whatever character quests you plan on doing. I won't spoil anything for any of them, but I'll just warn you that they are *very* easy to mess up.
Me: A red wolf called red wolf what simple but effective character design.
Skyen: i can see at least one and a half hours of character analysis here.
That's my Brand™ baybeeeeee!
@@TBSkyen and its a damned good one
LET'S GO WE'RE BACK!! This brought back flashbacks of watching this on stream over a year ago, i had no idea how much i remembered. Your character design analysis is always a delight, can't wait for the rest of these epsiodes (that is a lie. I could wait another year easily. Don't overwork yourself!)
I'm so happy this series is back! I binged the Bloodborne and DS1 series while I was recovering from surgery in January, and then binged all of DS2 in the weeks after, and was really excited to see you started on an Elden Ring one too! This was an excellent breakdown of the Red Wolf and had a lot of points I hadnt really thought of before. Keep up the great work!!
I wanna see more of you play this game and experience it for the first time, its also such a delight seeing you have a fiery passion and an inspiring drive to keep going and trying to kill a boss enthusiastically, because if I was fighting a boss and kept dying I would lose patience if I die for like 7 times
No idea if you’ll read this seeing as you posted it a few months back but I am so glad that you are continuing this series. Your Souls and Bloodborne Boss designs were fantastic and watching them massively cheers me up, especially during the long dark hours of winter! Thank you from the bottom of my heart :3
Hearing the BotW Guardian piano intro seized my whole heart, holy damn
I love how more creative and fun your visual jokes get with each episode in this series!
The car jokes got me really good XD
Never has there been a faster click in my life. Im ecstatic to see the return of past and future skyen butting heads while roaming the lands between. Already got my calendar set for that 2 week deadline 😉
Favorite series is back! Thank you Skyen!
I'm so glad to see a new episode of Boss Designs. I've been taking the break to watch other breakdowns on the channel, and because of the break it's given me a chance to watch the previous three seasons with a friend of mine who got into souls recently.
had this on in the background and the race car sounds at 43:37 came out of nowhere and cracked me up LOL thanks for the laughs :'D
I love this series so much, I'm so glad its back. I hope you have fun playing and making these videos Skyen!
Some folks like to say that Renala got the dog in the divorce.
It's also extra ambiguous to the matter of protection, as you addressed. There was rebellion against Renala, and perhaps the wolf is guarding her for her safety... or perhaps it is preventing her from being released.
Jokes aside, glad to see this upload! I don't always agree 100% with all your analysis, they come from a logical train of thought and the differing angle of perspective is something I genuinely enjoy. I love your content, and even though I'm not usually big on "Let's Play" style videos, you're just so funny and engaging to watch. Honestly I'd be happy to patreon sub once I'm in a better financial spot again.
Nice to see this come back. Went back and rewatched the previous episodes for the proper mood.
I can't believe you just flat out ignored over half of Limgrave and went into Liurnia with a +2 weapon though, how oblivious can you get.
Welcome to the Boss Designs series :)
Well I just dropped everything the moment I saw this.
I found you via the Boss Designs of Bloodborne a couple months back and have now marathoned your other Boss Designs videos. They're turned into me go to for background entertainment.
Yes! My favourite youtube series! I've been so looking forward to seeing boss designs return, can't wait for your further insights. Welcome back!
So glad you start this series up again, and I can’t wait for when you cover dark souls 3. I think you’ll really like that one
1:33:15 I love the idea of a “Blue Hound of Rennala”-sleek and silvery with a greyhound body plan, wearing an ornate collar, maybe with flowing streamers like the Carian Knight mantle…
Of course, one Carian Royal DOES have a wolf, but that way spoilers lie 😉
My guy was so close to the funny meme from the abductor virgin under the water wheel.
Who gave the damn Liurnia Lobsters anti-material rifles?!
Really great to see another Elden ring video! Love your take on the analysis
I watched all of the dark souls 1 and 2 boss designs series since the last elden ring video and oh my god im so glad this series is back!!! Elden Ring lore has fascinated me since the game came out. You have such a thorough and interesting way of analyzing these characters. I'd never considered the remains on the ground of the debate parlor, and that really really changes things! In my mind I just thought radagon left rennala with the dog in their divorce and kinda left it at that but I think you're right that it goes deeper than that.
I cannot express how excited I was to realize this dropped
It's back Baby! And just in time for me to enjoy elden ring content again!
I’m so happy to see another, just because it means you got to make another video for a series you truly enjoy making!
Do what you want to love and keep on Skyen!
P.S. Your Boss Design Videos are my “ASMR” I use to sleep. So I can’t wait to add like a thousand views.😂
GOD DAMN! I missed this series!
Thank yah !
"Wheel come back and deal with him later" is my new head canon now.
Let's goo he's back with the boss designs good to see it.
An interesting detail about the wolf is that every spell in the game has a crest that comes up when it is cast that denotes it's lineage, even spells yet to be made available to the player, except for the red blade the wolf summons. This indicates to me that it's either not a spell a all, or it's something truly unique amongst the arsenal of magic in the game.
Incantations.
Watching these videos feels super nostalgic, even tho It's not been that much time since I experienced these parts of the game myself. Feels like it was a different era.
I love seeing actual analysis of these characters because it truly shows how the game and the lore are really one in the same.
Thanks for continuing. Also, the fact that one of the final momentos left by Radagon was the amber egg of reincarnation is pretty telling of his relationship with the academy. Considering it's literally the reason why she was estranged from the rest of the academy, its clear his purpose was to cause internal strife. His marriage was probably just a necessary step to eliminating a troublesome opponent for him.
I'm glad to see you back to this, Skyen. These series have been my favorite to listen to while I'm working on stuff.
This is so fresh! Love that the series is back; Your design and thematic analysis is always interesting and unique. Also top notch editing
I absolutely love how you edit these videos.
Damn, I was really hoping Skyen would be killed by the Abductor Virgin down there
I had honestly given up hope of more fromsoft boss design videos so im am super glad to see them return,
so happy to see this back, can't wait to see you experience and pick apart this masterpiece
Welcome back future Skyen, hope you enjoyed your nap!
watching this is such a joy, it's easy to follow because I've watched the unedited playthrough so many times but all the edits and additions make it a fun new experience nonetheless (for the gameplay portions) and of course the analysis!! happy to see this series continue but of course take your time with it :]
I never thought so hard about the wolf until now. Awesome analysis.
The good part of these releasing so far apart is that it makes me want to rewatch the previous ones!
Having but recently started playing Elden Ring myself I look forward to fighting the bosses you have yet analyzed ... and to see if my reading of bosses will line up with yours!
The oracle of the two fingers lady sounds like she creates 3 different voices, her own, and one for each finger.
Skyen is the only man to laugh manically while fat rolling
I'm so glad this series is back. It's fantastic work!!
Thank you for bringing this back!
We've been waiting a lot for this.
❤️ Love to see my favorite series back!! Great work! (As usual). Just wanted to say that even though this series may not get as many views as others on this channel, that is not reflected at all by the quality. This is a great addition to an already stellar group of vids!!
Fun fact about the Red Wolf or Radagon is that it was a boss concept that was initially left on the cutting room floor for Dark Souls 3. It was found in the game's files and eventually made its way into Elden Ring
Hooray, I’m so excited to see this back! Thank you Skyen for all the work and effort you put into the Boss Designs videos. They’re always worth the wait :D
Love that the Boss Designs are back! You know I'll be here for them!
I like Skyen's work. I like smiling enough it aches while listening to takes that end up more insightful than most of the rest of the Souls fandom, even when they're wrong.
Because they're wrong startlingly rarely, for someone who goes into these blind.
And, that is the correct response to Turtle (Tortoise) Pope.
