    They're called Scarabs because the Protoss were at one point going to be the Necrons from 40k (The Necrons are inspired by the Tomb Kings from Warhammer fantasy, but as killer robots, and they retained most of the mummy/ancient Egyptian themes), a remnant from when SC was intended to be a 40k themed game before that fell through and they made a smash hit game that 40k would "take inspiration from".
    Interesting development lore, you'd be surprised how common things like that are.

    If they had some of the newer AI play SCBW, none of these popular strategies employed by human players would work.
    Almost half of the abilities in BW is completely ignored by players because they simply require too much APM or individual clicks to work.
    But the devs designed these abilities to balance out the races, and not using them unbalances the game in these 1v1 matchups.
    For example, we saw here Terran was spamming goliaths to counter Protoss carrier player. This is actually the worst defense possible. Instead, you should be doing Ghost and lockdown. Even if it takes two ghosts to lockdown one carrier, it is a good trade. The Protoss player has to decide between guarding the locked down carrier and risking his fleet or abandoning it to die. Incorporating a few ghosts into a goliath army instantly shifts the balance back to Terran players.
    This is why we see so much turtling and endgame resource choke offs in BW games. All 3 races are being played like Zerg, with one Overmind macroing 90% of the time and doing some rare micro in key moments in games.
    Really it should be played like a Terran general or admiral issuing directives to majors and sergeants who carry out group and unit level micro in the midst of battle, or for Protoss a combined Khala based combat system where all of the units are simultaneously acting together and reinforcing each other in combat. This is possible with AI but not possible with human players averaging 300 APM.
    Unfortunately, 20+ years later and the game is STILL not being played the way it was envisioned.

  • @ObeliskM
    @ObeliskM Před rokem

    I dont get why goliaths almost always target interceptors and let carriers wipe them/tanks out because of that. Interceptors are cheap and easily replaceable. Target carriers instead, each lost carrier = a lot of resources lost + 8 dead interceptors.

    • @tylerwinkle323
      @tylerwinkle323 Před rokem

      it's hard to get within range to target fire individual carriers, especially against good protoss players
      also, if you have a 4 to 1 goliath to carrier ratio, you can attack move the interceptors and take them out

    • @ObeliskM
      @ObeliskM Před rokem

      @@tylerwinkle323 goliaths have very long range though. Plus you have scans. Is Bisu a bad player? In this game terran had a lot of opportunities to wipe carriers out, but mostly chose to kill interceptors.
      Trying to bankrupt protoss sitting on 4-6 bases by attacking cheap cannon fodder (which is meant to die instead of carriers) is a fool errand. Thats exactly what protoss wants.

    • @tylerwinkle323
      @tylerwinkle323 Před rokem

      @@ObeliskM Obviously it is better to attack carriers themselves, but with the goliaths' messed uppath finding (have you seen how they move in clumps of 24), the fog of war, and the fact that you have psi storms and dragoons blowing them up four at a time, it is preferable to do some damage to interceptors rather than lose a dozen goliaths for no value in return.
      Also, Bisu is a top Protoss player, while Sharp is one of the worst top tier Terrans (if there is such a thing). I think Bisu was screwing around and eating a sandwich half the game to be honest.
      The game was meant to be played differently - you remember the single player tutorial and campaigns for SCBW. But at the top levels you cannot macro and micro fast enough to really do that. So instead you hotkey all your factories and pump out 8 goliaths at a time to counter the Protoss carriers instead of building ghosts and researching lockdown.

  • @Ary634
    @Ary634 Před rokem

    I wonder why Sharp didn't invested in flying units (e. g. Wraith, Valkyrie) to deal with the Carrier issue instead of producing useless Vultures? (Just a curious question, don't harm me, i'm one of the worst SC players ever.)

    • @sporkify5941
      @sporkify5941 Před rokem +1

      So, Valks are terrible against Carriers. While Valks are theoretically anti-air, they do this by firing off a lot of missiles that deal splash. This makes them good against things like stacked mutas, but Carriers have high armor. Without upgrades, most of the Valk missile damage is eaten by Carrier armor; less than half would get through to health. (And if Terran upgrades air attack while Protoss upgrades air armor, it's net even.)
      While Wraith may look like fighter planes, you shouldn't be fooled- they're actually made of paper. For it's cost, it's simply not effective...and if they meet Dragoons, they just cry. Much of the value of Wraiths comes from their ability to cloak, but Bisu kept quite a few Observers on-hand at all times. (This was primarily for map control, but it also meant that cloaked Terran units were never going to get far.)
      Then, Air and Ground attacks are separate trees; you generally want to lean into 1. Getting reasonable upgrades for only a few air units is also not cost effective. (And for Wraiths, cloaking needs to be bought.)
      As for producing Vultures, you can notice that Bisu never used 100% Carriers; he always had a small/moderate sized ground force around. Vultures play a variety of roles-they're the fastest unit around, meaning they can outrun everything. This works well with the fact that they can 2-shot probes; they're great at sprinting to supply lines and killing workers. They're also a steal at 75 minerals; if 2 vultures kill 3 probes, they've paid for themselves. And I'm not even counting the 3 spider mines that come pre-packaged. Those provide great map vision (You'll notice the times when Bisu's ground forces ran into them. This gave Sharp advance warning that Bisu had units in those areas.) and if it takes 6 spider mines to kill a single Dragoon, that's a good trade for the Terran. (150 mins for 2 Vultures worth of mines vs 125 mins + 50 gas for the Goon. The Vultures have already paid for themselves, even before they started sprinting for that probe line.) Given their price tag, Terrans like to throw them in front of the Tank lines. Vultures absorb damage from Protoss Ground that would otherwise be going to more valuable units, and you don't really mind if your Tanks splash them to pieces.
      Sharp's answer to carriers was the Goliath. Bisu just never let them have a fair fight on open ground; he always maneuvered his forces into places where the Goliaths couldn't run down Carriers. One of 3 things was almost always true: Carriers were positioned out of sight with terrain blocking vision so Goliaths couldn't effectively catch and shoot, or Carriers were positioned with Protoss ground forces nearby so that Goliaths couldn't effectively catch and shoot (And their Tank support was too far away) or Carriers fought the Goliaths in tight spaces/angles where bulky Goliaths couldn't effectively catch and shoot.
