The 3.7 L version was used by Mazda in their CX9 also. That water pump would go and people would just keep driving until it would quit running. A regular inspection of coolant level and constant close monitoring of coolant temperature is a must. If you think you want a car that you can just get in and drive like most people want then I'd stay as far away as you can from these engines.

I do my own work as much as possible not to save money, but to know it’s done right. I used to work in at a dealership here’s what I learned, very few know how to or care enough to do it right, the ones that do have the knowledge to do it right don’t get the time and money to do it right. I don’t blame the mechanics, they get a tiny fraction of what the customer is charged for repairs, way underpaid for what they do.

I'm the same way, with my semi and with my motorcycle. For me it's not really about the money, that's more of a bonus, mostly with my semi I do it myself to know it's done right. Although, it does help that I know a master mechanic so I've got a lot of knowledge available to me. Even that aside, in this day and age of youtube you can watch a few videos and get a pretty good idea of what to do, so if you're mechanically inclined, and have the tools to do it right, most jobs would be doable if you're willing. But sometimes I just don't really want to screw with it and let someone trusted do it. Your time is worth something, so I take that into account as well.

If the belt isn't broken and the car runs ok (belt hasn't slipped) you can put a pair of white marks on each sprocket and a corresponding mark of each belt tooth that lies between the pairs of sprocket marks. Take off the belt and count the belt teeth between the marks you've made on the old belt then put marks in the same places on the new belt. Reinstall with belt marks placed between orresponding srpocket marks.. No special tools required

A little past top dead center puts the pist9ns down far enough you'll never get contact bit can still line up the chain marks. Hundreds of interference engines later and zero issues. The 4.0 SOHC is the only engine that needs one. I made my own and it's accurate within 0.5° on new chains every time. The ford tool is 3-4°

Yes, we now have an entire wall stacked with specialty timing tools for different engines. And that's separate from the network tools, programming equipment, general service gauges, the scanners, radio frequency and infrared detection and ultrasonic testing equipment. I did timing chain and turbos on a 3.5 not too long ago. They make it pretty idiot proof with the marks on the chain. The tool is 20 bucks too. Just gotta make sure and use the true Motorcraft sealant.

@j duv no their new formula resists a reaction with the oil. The old stuff would react with hot oil and breakdown. That's why most 3.5s leak at the timing cover. I think it negatively impacted the oil too. Made it foam or something. What I've been taught. Idk if it's bs or not.

So when you take the timing off on a suburu, they have white marks dead center, and all the other markers have to line up exactly, or, you take a chance of blowing the motor! Or tearing it up at least, even if you don't blow it, it's still messed up! Trust me, I know! I did try to tell the guy working on my car about it, but he knows more than me, well 3 hours later, he got it back to dead center, when if he would've just listened to me, would've saved 3 hours min..... Car still don't run!

Making it more owner unfriendly. When you pay cash, you deserve to separate from the dealer for a while. In this day and age when a Honda keeps going and going, why is it that North America keeps falling down ? What is a "timing hold down set ?

The end if Al Gore, David Suzuki and Greta have their way. With all these Ev's they want to push either you won't have a vehicle due to cost or you won't be able to fix or service anything on it your self. They've got that high voltage stuff locked up with safety courses and being licensed to work on it !

The dealership did this to my wife’s explorer a while back she picked it up drove it for a week I get in and instantly could tell something was off. Took it straight back dealer had to completely go thru and replace all the timing components they just installed because they installed incorrectly good thing the water pump was covered under warranty and their work was 100% covered
