I don't know, the Jestar Redesign didn't convince me, the should have a evil smile like it's making fun of you, but changing it's personally to a serious one is more a Downgrade than a upgrade.
In itself, in the last part you can see the change that Jestar looks more serious, in my opinion it would have been better if he continued to keep that smile as you say since the character is like that, he mocks Hal while he is throwing his attacks
