  • William Lindesay OBE is a British geographer, a research fellow at his alma mater Liverpool University, a member of The Explorers Club, and a recent recipient of The Special Award of the Royal Society for Asian Affairs.
    After traveling 2,500 km on foot along the Great Wall in 1987, Lindesay returned to China in 1990, basing himself in Xi’an to retrace highlight sections of the Long March. He relocated to Beijjng in 1993 to return to the Great Wall, acquiring a farmhouse beside a section of ‘Wild Wall’ at Jiankou in 1998. He pioneered programs to protect the Great Wall landscape in the Beijing region, and in 1999 established the conservation group International Friends of the Great Wall.
    Lindesay received the Friendship Award of China in 1998, was made an Officer, Order of the British Empire by HM Queen Elizabeth II in 2006, and was awarded the Great Wall Friendship Medal of Beijing in 2008. Recently, he was named as a luminary member among ‘The Explorers Club 50, Class of 2022’.
    Lindesay is married to Wu Qi, and they have two adult children, James and Thomas, who themselves made a journey along the Great Wall in 2022, covering a distance of 3,263 km between Jiayuguan and Shanhaiguan.
