Thanks so much! Currently struggling with a loopy look and nothing so far has helped. Wish you were closer - I'd haul both my machines to you for servicing in no time ... When an overlocker works properly it's a dream, if it doesn't you need a four-year apprenticeship to fix it yourself 😄

Finally!! I have been looking for something that described all the wonky ways tension issues and even knife adjustments can be off. I have a Brother serger I spent quite a number of years saving Amazon GCs to purchase, and this vid has done more than the instruction booklet has in describing how to fix tension issues. I’ve been quilting for 30 years, and sewed baby/kid clothes for my two when they were younger. As a weaver, I needed a serger to help with finishing rugs. Thank you so much for this vid! It’s getting saved to a playlist for sure! ❤

Very instructive video, thank you. When I started sewing there were a few similar issues with threading and thread tension. Additionally, thick fleece material on my overlocker required to maximise the cutting width. Thanks to your explanation I understand why. 🙏

Thank you so much for this! 😍 I've been wracking my brain for ages on why my overlocking has been all loopy and it was just a bit of thread caught in the lower looper tension dial 😂

  • @timeheals8

My lower looper thread that is loose and loopy is what's going on with my overlocker and this has been helpful as I didn't know what are the upper or lower loops by looking at the mess on my fabric. 😂 Thanks ao much.

Thank you so much for this extremely informative video. I have a Janome 604D overlocker (we call them that in Australia, too!) and now realise what my tension issue is. Condolences for the loss of your beautiful Molly. What a wonderful companion she was for you. Kind Regards.

Thank you so much❤ This was THE best video! Firstly, I am in South Africa so we also call it an overlocker. I made two pairs of pants last week and my overlocker was perfect. Then I changed threads, using the knot method, and all went wrong. The bottom looper I figured out had snapped (and oh how I hate threading that one. About 10 tries later I had it at where I felt I covered all the bases. But it still would not work, it was absolutely messy. I tried changing the tensions but nothing helped. Then I noticed one of the knots did not go through the clamp, it stuck and broke, but it was a needle one and easy to thread. Then I still had the mess plus, when I let it run a bit of a tail, I noticed there is one thread that is just straight inbetween the mixed up tail. Plus I had the one looper hanging over the edge of the fabric. Now I have a good idea of where the start again and hopefully I will get it right tonight (which I assume is almost your morning). I absolutely enjoy your patience and the tone of your voice whilst explaining, will subscribe right away because you will definitely be my go-to person. Thank you.

  • @tonyray91

Really helpful, I always struggle with the lower looper, not the threading as such as mine has the lever device to place the thread but where to place the tail once it’s through the looper eye. This isn’t shown on the machine or the manual. I have found it need to go over the top of the upper looper and I put the threads under the presser foot as you have shown. In the UK we too call them overlockers probably our Commonwealth roots.

Thank you for a very clear and pedagogical video! Great learning by a great teacher! Question, if I do want to have the knifes set to the smallest amount of seam, should I then increase on the tensions for the loopers so that they meet on the ridge?

I have the same make over locker but only A 3 thread, has worked well until recently and it went loopy. Tried various tensions without success then found your video. First Decided to change spools for better quality thread and ended up having to re thread. it then immediately jammed up a couple of times even though I thoroughly checked the threading now it won’t sew at all do you think the jam would have put out the timing and do you think it’s worth getting fixed? Great video,

Hi Abi I hope you still read your old posts. Im in a big jam. I was altering a neckline on some pjs. The fabric got chewed up in the footplate teeth. Couldn’t shift it so took the footplate off, didn’t have enough room so ended up taking the whole of the foot off! Then all the threads came undone. Thought I sorted it out put the footplate back together now its making a clanking noise and the needles are getting stuck help me please 🙏
