Darren Osment convicted of murdering Claire Holland - ITV News 11th December 2023.

Robert Murphy, the ITV News correspondent, was the only journalist who sat through every stage of the Darren Osment trial: from the legal arguments about the confessions, to the jury stage, to Paddy O'Hara and Osment giving evidence to the verdict.
This report into how a covert police officer obtained 16 confessions from the prime suspect in the murder of Claire Holland.
Undercover officer 'Paddy O'Hara' befriended Darren Osment in Bristol in December 2020 and spent 300 of the following 600 days with the suspect.
He recorded 1,200 hours of audio and also some video evidence.
But it was only in June 2022, in Confession #16, that Osment gave away enough for detectives to charge him.
He denied murder, but was convicted by a jury at Bristol (majority 10-2) in December 2023.
This is Rob Murphy's background report, followed by his interview with Claire's family then a studio debrief.
Police, prosecution and defence barristers objected to the release of the video and audio of the covert work. But Rob - who had no desire to endanger any ongoing or future undercover work - felt that as a journalist he had to argue for the release fo materials shown before a jury in open court. He used the 'Open Justice' argument. And in her ruling, the judge sided with. Rob.
