The reason the Japanese Sega 3DS collection is worth much more than other regions is because it is 3 different volumes inside the outer cardboard box. Only Japan got all 3 volumes and everywhere else only got Volume 1 which is the cheap listings you see. Because Volume 2 and 3 were never released outside of Japan, the box set as a whole ends up commanding a much larger price.
Correction, everywhere else got Volume 2 as a single package. They most likely skipped Volume 1 internationally because it doesn't include a Sonic game and is almost exclusively old arcade ports, so marketing it internationally would be less easy. Also worth noting that all of the games in volume 1 and 2 were still distributed internationally, but only digitally. Most of Volume 3's games also saw oversees releases, but not all of them which I assume would add to its desirability physically. But for the most part when it comes to the collectors market, you're paying for the box, packaging, and/or software revision more than the actual games. Which is exactly why I don't collect games physically.
The Inari Shrine looks really beautiful. An Orange Pikachu N64? I just recently learned they exist and as far as I know they where not released here in Europe. The Blue Toys'R's GBA is just beautiful!
Thank you Elliot, you're making me want to go to Japan even more now with these awesome vlogs! Have a great day man, thank you for all the excellent content! The editing is incredible btw
I've been loving these Japan vlogs, the quality of the video is insnae Great job, Elliot! 🔥 I never knew there were orange Pikachu Nintendo 64's! That's nice!
Man! I love the hard•off videos! Its just amazing to see how cheap some of this things are and how good are they packed, they are putting every game (even these crappy ones) in a foil with a price sticker!
I still think they made mangrove wood avaliable on Minecraft so you could build these amazing tori gates. Incredible video Elliot, loving the slow-mo shots.
My boxed orange Pikachu console came from Japan at the beginning of 2020 (shipment delayed to May by the outbreak) but had no audio. I was working my way back from the AV jack, replacing capacitors and the AMP-NUS chip when my multimeter probe slipped and shorted pins 1/2. Shorting those two sent 12v into C28 (rated 25v) which IMMEDIATELY reformed the capacitor and restored audio. I happened to get it all on video including the ear-splitting moment that Super Mario 64 music started blasting from the test monitor beside the workbench. As part of the experiment I left the rest of the capacitors alone including that one (never replaced) and the console still works with audio today! It was the super-late NUS-CPU-09-1 board revision with the stamped heat sink (no heat blocks) so I believe the capacitor component supplier (Matsushita/Panasonic) was switching to problematic RoHS-compliant electrolyte formulas. That would explain why you only see capacitor failures like this in later consoles. I ordered it along side a boxed blue Pikachu console which actually cost even less despite working perfectly from the start. It was barely 100 combined.
I was at Fushimi Inari about a month ago when I was on my trip to Japan. Just around the corner (about 10 minute walk from the shrine) there is a TV Game/Trading card shop where I picked up a Boxed Metallic Red New 3DS LL. I was delighted as I didnt get too lucky with getting a 3DS in Tokyo. I think the store was called Ojamakan Fukakusa Store. It was an even split of Trading Cards, New games and Retro games which I would recommend as the prices were fairly reasonable!
Did anyone give you grief for filming in any of those shops? I always heard for years on podcasts and stuff (because I've not been to Japan) that foreigners would get in trouble for taking pictures or whatever in a store, though maybe they've lightened up on that?
just a suggestion, i think the thumbnails should’ve stayed “different” from the typical green background ones just to differentiate these travel videos, also a playlist would be cool
That and the used items generally are kept in better condition... decades ago when I studied there I remember buying a copy of FFIX for basically 5 bucks, that had all it's original inserts and all 4 discs were in new condition, as if it was never played.
Japanese video games stores are like: "A one of a kind limited edition Gameboy colour that is incredibly sought after by collectors due to its rareness" and it cost the equivalent of 25 dollars
8/9 years ago or so i Found a blue Pikachu N64 at a thrift store by my house. Dude literally sold it to me for 20 with controller and original AC brick lol. Thrifting used to be flipping cool back in the day.... Early 2010s lol sounds funny hearing that like if it was sooo long ago. I Used to come up on gameboys amd Nintendo DS's regularly!
You better open the toys r us gba and have look inside, the label says “box only”. Not sure if they’re really selling just the box, console not included.
Elliot, I just hiked the Tori Gates in Kyoto on May 21,2023. It was a hard hike to the top, I think you go under 1,000 of them! I also heard lots of people speaking English! Nice to see it at night time! Love the Game Boy hunting!
Watching these videos really offsets the soul-crushing price gougers and game snob stores/vendors I've come across. No common NDS game cart (only) is worth $55 just because you think it is and the console is antiquated. Last Comic Con I went to had the worst prices I've ever seen, second only to a few used media stores. A sealed (maybe graded, with shell) game including everything might be worth the $100 tag, but not if it's just the cartridge. If you run a second-hand game/movie shop, get off your "I know what I have" high horse already.
This series makes me want to book a trip straight to the heart of Japan, and just look through second-hand stores, not even to necessarily buy anything, but just look through everything.
I visited the Hard Off in Nagahama last weekend while exploring Maibara! I had not seen your video prior to that so I was very surprised! I found some really cool PSP games for next to nothing in that store.
as someone who likes pointing out where you've found rhythm game controllers, the hori fight pad controller was above an Ascii Beatmania controller, from a time where 5 Keys Beatmania was king. I noticed quite a few other cool things like those Pc engine link cables (basically for Bomberman, Bomberman 93 and 94, as well as the competition bomberman which only had the multiplayer) Man I wish I could check out one of those stores
I think i was on the other side of Lake Biwa only a week or two after you, staying with some family in Takashima, I did not have nearly as much luck with seconds hand stores :(
The last checkpoint before reaching the top of Mt Inari is where you can see the city view. I went there early in the morning back then. I should try come during night if i ever visit Japan next time.
@@cloudywolf999 He discusses the $1000 3DS game at about the 4:00 mark. It's the Sega 3D Classics Collection. I have no idea how you missed it. The top comment also explains why that game is so expensive.
I am absolutely loving these vlogs, can't wait for more! I have a question about the trip, did you go with someone that could speak Japanese? I'm guessing yes, but I'm also wondering, do you think this kind of trip to more rural parts would have been possible without someone that could translate/talk? I've heard that rural Japan is a lot less doable for people who don't speak the language

Woah!
But easy to get if you use a modded 3ds! Woo

These deals would drive me nuts not being able to bring it all home
It's driving me nuts just watching 😂

The blue ones are also alot lighter blue in japan almost liek a baby blue
So cool to see you visited the 2nd hand store near Lake Biwa. I studied abroad near there and have fond memories seeing everything that store has.
2:47 Wow, that's a Konami Guitar Freaks controller in the back, the uh.. "inspiration" for Guitar Hero in the west from 1999.
I love how everyone in japan take care of their stuff

Duuuuude! The cinematography and quality is mind blowing! This is probably my favorite YT series at the moment!!

"4 bucks? more like 4 yups" Amazing line.
The 3rd party GBA to GC cables was the only ones my siblings and I were able to find when we were younger.
Love these Japan video.

I love watching these videos. It’s great to see a lot of retro games in near mint condition.
these videos give me a feeling of contentment that is unmatched by any other video
These were some amazing finds. Did not know that gold PS3 existed....off to sendico!
I dig the bassline playing in the background near the end.
That is what I love about Japan is that they have so many incredible things that you would never see in America.
tbh i find america more interesting than japan.........

literally, no better video series to promote tourism to Japan. well done, Elliot. 🎉❤
I definitely want to visit Japan and buy a bunch of retro stuff. I'd get so many different variant N64 consoles and controllers lol
Very cool series. I enjoy watching all of your episodes!
What's weird is that if we flipped this on its head and it was a Japanese person going to CEX and Cash Converters it'd be terrible.
i don't understand how you don't buy EVERYTHING! you got some will power!
Did you know that the orange gates were the inspiration for Stargox/Starwing?

Meanwhile American thrift stores:
60 year old crock pot with some mystery (hopefully) dry substances.
On the subject of 3rd party gba-gcn cables, yes!
I bought mine from the old Toys 'R Us in Manchester many years ago.
Congrats on making it to the top of Fushimi Inari Shrine. We got maybe a 3rd of the way up, but it was stupid hot and stupid humid.
Legend has it that Shigeru Miyamoto inspired by that shrine's orange gates for star fox level designs. Inari means Fox
Fushimi Inari's thousand gates gave inspiration of star fox series to Shigeru Miyamoto.
Great video, as always from this series. But, what’s with the title? I didn’t even see any 3DS games, let alone a $1,000 one.
My gameboy gamecube link cable was 3rd party from Game back when they still existed in sweden

I lived in an apartment complex behind that first hard off from 2016 to 2018. That's the nagahama hard off. Spent many hours there.

One the other hand, my bank account wouldn't wish for that to be the case.
In Europe we don't have that luck ... that store is huge...
all the deals you passed down were driving me crazy AAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Thanks for this video. I live in Shiga and didn't know about Kaihosoko Maibaraten........Can get there by bike!
best series i love it!
Love these videos man keep up the great work
Think I see a bunch of stuff in every video I would buy lol - probably a good job I can't afford to go to Japan
The super scope was one of my favorites as a child!
Are we allowed to just take this stuff back to the states via my luggage?

I appreciate the effort you put into your videos, I like that you show the nature / culture of Japan. Thanks Elliot ^_^
Sooo did I miss the $1000 3ds game? Was it the Sega Collection?
OH MY GOd the wild world card holders are so cute
How did you get all this stuff back home?
P.S. I believe those gates were the inspiration for the checkpoints in Star Fox
Probably sendico will do it for him as he promotes their service.
Me going to do the EXACT same thing and heading to Japan in October: NO! STOOOOOP! LEAVE ME SO-oh good find-PLEASE GOD
Just because something is listed at a ridiculous price on ebay doesn't mean it's actually worth that amount nor that it will sell.
God, it hurts not being able to buy a 3ds at a normal price. Japans got all the good stuff
great that you add the address of the stores...
Fushimi Inari Shrine is my favorite in Japan

Thats like half way. There is no view after that point lol.
I creamed when I saw that Uncharted PS3 Controller. I remember wanting it so bad
Thanks you sooooo much for your videos! They are insanly good!
I hope you bought the Toyota game boy pocket.
I didn't realise from the title that this was one of the Japanese tour videos
Been to that shrine way way back in 2008.
Impressive finds!
Buying a dust cover for you Wii slit is wild
I clicked on "I found a 3DS game in japan Worth $1000..."
Instead it was "I found a GameBoy in Japan that we never got…"
Right? I scanned back through the video in case I missed something. Fell for more clickbait...

love those kantaidan bundles, always full of crap but nice to see
Do these stores make money? I would assume there’s enough of a market in Japan to create the demand, but the stores never seem busy.
Typically when CZcamsrs and such ask permission to film in these shops they're asked not to film other customers.
I think that three-button Playstation controller was for a trivia game that was briefly popular.
Japan seems like a place where I'd go bankrupt within 3 working days... such amazing stuff.
I'm wondering if the green Nunchuck was a Year of Luigi thing?
I can't believe that 3DS game's price in dollars, crazy!
I have that clear Dreamcast keyboard. It's actually really uncomfortable to use, lol.
wow

Not related to video but can anyone suggest the best Facebook group for repair advice, there so many groups. Dmg powering up but nothing on screen
Nice music selection
6:10 That ps3 is SICCCKKK
idk it was so weird to me to see a 3 second clip of a neo geo playing a hacked version of king of fighters... didn't espect japan to play those
I would’ve jumped on that pikachu console 100% I would’ve left clothes behind at the hotel to fit it in my luggage lol
