- Across the sea from Kirkwall. White sandy beaches, turquoise waters, blue skies and lush, green islands. All experienced from 1000ft up in Loganairs Britten-Norman Islander.
What a pleasure it was to experience this aircraft and fly on such a beautiful day from Kirkwall as we ventured out to North Ronaldsay and then across to Papa Westray on this twin-prop ‘workhorse’ of the islands. I had one of the best seats - right behind the pilot so I could film some real ‘close-to-the-action’ footage of the flights and I can tell you they were two of the most amazing flights of my life.
Come with me on this trip and enjoy it with me. A truly unforgettable experience, topped-off with a gorgeous sunset over Westray at the end of the day.
Thanks as always for watching - no prizes for guessing where I’ll be flying on my next video! And as always guys, cheers for now!
Mark

How cool is that!! Love the guy in the back casually reading his book while an epic experience unfolds before him. probably used to it.😀 We're heading to Stronsay in October but by ferry as we'll have the car and a fair bit a stuff.
Fantastic price for the type and number of flights. I didn’t realize they were so cheap across the Orkney islands. There I a small operator that also flies the Islander from Galway (Ireland) to the Arran Islands. Similar price and flight duration( 10Mins). ✈️
Yep, once you’re there, getting around whether it’s bus, boat or plane is fairly cheap. I went to Inishmore (I think) about 20 years back and we took a boat. Didn’t know you could fly there - thanks for the info.
Cracking video as always. This brought me many happy memories of inter-island flights.
Cheers mate, yes a memorable experience. I had the weather for it (which helped) but yep, unforgettable really 👍
Cracking vid
Thank you - definitely recommend flying around these islands. I had a great time 👍
Really interesting and beautiful part of the world. Thanks for sharing!
It is. Not cheap to get up there tbh but worth the effort - a beautiful place.
Great views and a great flight, thank you and cheers.
Cheers Simon. Yes a truly unforgettable experience. Recommend it to anyone (the weather helped tbf). 👍
Enlightening , and in truth , we expected nothing less from you . Magnifico !! What more have you got up your sleeve to stun us ?
Hi O'P thanks very much - really appreciate the kind words! Well I'm going to release the last segment of the Orkney trip tonight - the world's shortest scheduled flight. Hope you enjoy. Cheers
I like it. I now feel the need to go see it all for myself.
Many thanks.
David in Devils Bridge.
You should David, amazing place and plenty of unusual trip options 👍
Wonderful video brought so many happy memories of our holidays in Orkney ❤❤
Hi Linda, I’m really glad it brought back memories. That’s why I do this stuff and comments like yours motivate me to do more of it! All the best, Mark 😊👍
Nice one! Had a really close look at one of those planes at East Fortune Museum of Flight just this week. Great little aircraft. Last time I flew in one was between Grenada and Union Island, sadly, before I started doing vlogs. 😀
Hi Rog, thanks. Wow, Grenada I would love to do some flying down there (well, anything really - never been). Don't know about you but imo it's proper flying really with all the lumps and bumps. Hopefully I'll get back there again one day!
Excellent footage 💕💕💕💕💕🥂🥂🥂🥂🥂🍷🍷🍷🍷🍸🍸🍸🍸🍸🍸
Thanks Derisley 👍👍👍👍🏝🏝🏝🏝🏝🏝🏡🏡🏡🏡🛫🛫🛫🛫🛫🛫🛫🛫
Cheers for now!
Thank you for an excellent review! Great flight, though surprised there is only one pilot on board ?
Hi Anthony, cheers mate. Yep one pilot, I think that’s always been the case. When I was looking at other videos it certainly seemed to be that way.
Thanks
Daz, much appreciate the super thanks - you're my first one!! Cheers pal
@@LetsMakeaTrip no worries, I really enjoy your videos
Did they give you a boarding pass and go through security?
Bag weighed and tagged. As shown in the video you just walk through the door then for the inter-island flights.
I think the correct name of the airport is Kirkwall International Airport!
No it’s not
It’s Kirkwall airport
£36 or €42.37 for a short flight? Well, Binter (The Inter-Canary Islands flights' company and it operates also some flights to Morocco and Mauritania) offers flights from the 8 airports in the Canary Islands, and a flight from Tenerife South Airport to Gran Canaria Airport costs about €15 to €19.50 if you book 2 weeks in advance.
Also, Iberia flights from Mallorca to Menorca costs from €28 to €63 in the furthest advance date you can book online ( In 11 weeks' time)
I paid £21 for KOI - NRL - PPW - WRY - KOI because I stayed overnight. Yes there’s lots of cheap island flights down there but this is all about the aircraft and the experience (plus the worlds shortest scheduled flight) not the cost. Can you sit behind the pilot with Binter or Iberia?
@@LetsMakeaTrip No, it is a regular turboprop aeroplane with almost all the experiences as an short-route flight (Pilot cabine is just only for the to commandant & no food is served for a half an hour to an hour's long flight)
But, How many flights did you do on these islands North of Scotland with that price of £21? (Which is almost €25 (You know, I'm Spanish and here, we use Euros and not Sterling Pounds))
Well, you can compare those prices of Loganair with Iberia's prices for flights between the Balearic Islands' Airports (Ibiza, Mallorca & Menorca) as well as flights from Mainland Spain's major airports to the Balearic and Canary Islands' major airports here: www.iberia.com/es/cheap-flights/Spain/
And you can also compare Loganair with Binter's prices for Inter-Canary Islands flights here: m.bintercanarias.com/eng/book
P.S: Canary Islands have the IGIC Tax, which is the VAT of the Canary Islands (It's a tax of a 7 percent added value for prices), which is 3 percent (For the flights from one point of Mainland Spain to another point of Mainland Spain (The flights going out of Mainland Spain, but going to places which are part of Spain, are free of VAT and flights going out of Spain's territories have the VAT of the country you're flying to)) lower than the Spanish VAT for flights.
Flights from the Canary Islands to Mainland Spain or to the EU have that 7 percent IGIC Tax
@@pedrorubiotejero_aka_prt I see Binter use the ATR-72 which is a decent enough turboprop with a rather boring interior (imo). Controversial view but I prefer the Dash-8 personally. Interesting you say about the food. I was on an ATR-72 a couple of days ago and we had free tea/coffee. That was a 40 minute flight. Thing is, the cabins small so they could easily get round everyone with some food. Budget airline I guess?
Chief, I do those flights daily as an itinerant teacher. Happy to give you some influence if you're interested.
Hi Christopher - that must be a great job in this beautiful part of the world! An interesting story for you, which you may wish to pass on to the kids at Papay:
When I was wandering around the Knapp of Howar, I found a box and on the box were the words 'look inside'. In the box was a sticker with a picture of a doondie. I signed the book and took a sticker.
The sticker now travels with me wherever I go and earlier this month it went all the way down to Mexico City. When I look at the sticker it reminds me of Papay and that you don't actually have to go very far at all to find real beauty in nature.
I'm uploading another video of the trip over to Westray today so please, feel free to share away! I would be really interested in any feedback you get and yep, happy to help with anything in the future. Please let me know.
Cheers, Mark
Lovely video.
I only have one gripe, and that's with the title. Never pluralise island groups. Orkney, Shetland, Faroe or Scilly are "The Isles of..." Or "... Isles". As a rule of thumb work on the principle that if you can't point at an individual "Orkney" or whatever then you can't add an "s".
Sorry, it's a local thing that's kind of like nails on a blackboard to us up here.
Hi Craigie, thanks for the comment. Quite happy to correct stuff based on viewers better knowledge. Give me a day or two though to do the thumbnail mate, as I’m currently away making some more content. Cheers 😊
