    Thanks a lot for the info, Just now found out that mine is a female and around 14-15 years of age, usually they do have skinny trunks but my palm’s trunk is quite thick. Great video!

      Thanks for watching! Nice one, I think sometimes good growing conditions and plenty of water can help aid a good strong trunk.

    In Brussels, I collected the female seeds of a Trachycarpus fortunei in January 2021. I sowed them in 2 tubs because there were too many for sowing in pots. The seeds have sprouted abundantly and today I have about a hundred small palm trees that I will have to transfer in groups of 10 into pots that I can later give to friends. That's exciting !

    My local garden centre had a big Trachycarpus at a very very good price so I did buy one for instant impact. Especially as my quest for tree ferns has failed so far this year! Too much demand!
    Can’t wait to see the palm flower... hopefully next year. It’s big enough! Just a matter of how it roots in. Can’t be doing bad so far as it’s pushing up a big new leaf?

    • @GeorgesJungleGarden
      @GeorgesJungleGarden  Před 3 lety

      Fair play if the price was right and like you say, it’s been a crazy year for buying plants! It’ll be absolutely fine I’m sure, it sounds like it’s growing away and I’d expect it to flower next year 😃

    I hope palms do naturalise in this country, it would bring the prices down.
    The other thing I would love to see become naturalised here in the UK is hummingbirds.

    • @GeorgesJungleGarden
      @GeorgesJungleGarden  Před 2 lety

      Potentially Ted although I suspect they’d still be growing them in Spain etc and bringing them over due to the higher growth rates! Hummingbirds are incredible aren’t they, something I’d love to see one day!

    Very interesting video, many thanks. I have two Chusan Palms in my garden, and both are flowering right now, unfortunately both Palms are female, so not much chance of getting seeds from them. As regards to how long it takes before the first flower appears, Well I planted my second Chusan Palm in July 2015, it only had about 12 inches of trunk at the time, it has grown quite fast, and it First flowered in May 2020 so just five years. In this time period it has grown to, at present 4.5 feet of trunk.......lovely Palms 🌴🌴.

    Hi George, I'm new to your channel and amazed by the content! I have 2 of those palms but every year they produce only male flowers and every year I'm hoping... I agree with the mess but it only lasts for a few days and then disappers. Problem is when I try to get there to reftilize it and end up covered in yellow snow, oh well. Very good quality of the video and images, very detailed. Thanks George!

    @maple494 Před 3 lety +1

    it'd be cool to grow some trachycarpus seedlings but i'm pretty sure the seedlings are way less hardier than mature palms and here they would never survive unless they were in a pot for the first few years :D

    Great video mate. My chaemerops is flowering now. I understand it's got male and female parts to it. Tried to unsuccessfully polinate it myself but I think it needs some type of beetle to do it for you which doesn't live here in the uk. It's a shame really as I'd love to see it produce seeds. Cheers

    • @GeorgesJungleGarden
      @GeorgesJungleGarden  Před 3 lety +1

      Cheers! Oh right, I do remember residing that they can have both parts. I can’t say I know enough about it, but if it’s pollinated by beetle, surely there’s a chance one of our insects might do it? Have you tried giving it a proper brushing?

    Im in the Netherlands and my palm will flower for the first time now! Buds are starting to open, but i got mixed answers, some said its a girl, some said its a boy😂
    Would you advice to fertilize it during or after blooming? What NPK ratio do you give?

    • @GeorgesJungleGarden
      @GeorgesJungleGarden  Před rokem

      Hi and thanks, exciting times! We’ll see! I’ve done a vid about palm feeding but when they’re established and in the ground, I occasionally give them liquid seaweed or sprinkle some slow release on during the growing season. For newly planted, young or potted palms, something like Palm Focus will give them a lot of the trace elements they ideally need for strong and healthy growth 😃

    • @GeorgesJungleGarden
      @GeorgesJungleGarden  Před rokem

      As for when, I usually feed mine roughly from May to August. Much earlier than April and it’s too cold for them to take the nutrients in and I stop in August to allow the new growth to harden off well.
