    A happy New Year to you and Justin, Shaun. Interesting point about how much luck plays in when fishing. However, there are fly fisherman who almost always catch. Here, many elements play in. Skill, reading water and conditiions, thinking like a fish, the ability to move spots, change flies, retrieve depths and speeds , just try something different are just a few. On my list "luck" would be at the end I think. Great looking flies by the way Shaun. Suitably scruffy and thus appealing. Take care mate :)

    • @shaunfishes101
      @shaunfishes101  Před rokem +1

      You are so on it David, and I would totally agree that luck would be at the end. If luck was any way near the front you will be going down hill fast. Confidence is key. And for a few of the points you have made, such as moving spot, for a lot of people who enjoy fishing from one spot purely because they are unable to move freely. I have met a few people now and we have one of our regulars who have Parkinson's. Changing a fly for these people is so difficult. My own memory problem plays a big down side to my fishing. When they say do a count down to when you last had a hit. No good for me mate. There is a very good chance bye the time I deal with the fish I will have forgotten what it was. This is why I have a camera, and now you are all sharing it with me. Thanks David. Shaun.

      @@shaunfishes101 Hi Shaun, Just watched this one again, Why the Braided section? Is it a twisted Mono Braided leader or is it actual Braid ?(like you'd use Sea fishing or for backing) Do I take it that it's - Fly line - Braid section (what length?) then Tippet (what length?) Always get some much from your videos, great content and explainantions as to what and why you're fishing it.
      Maybe a good idea for a video would be you and Justin , side by side, exactly the same set up, exactly the same flies. That would be interesting to watch. All the best Mate.

    • @shaunfishes101
      @shaunfishes101  Před rokem +1

      @@simonpeters3499 The braid is actually a tapered leader. Snowbee I use most of the time. This all started years ago when I fished the rivers. But I have found it quite practical on the still waters. Intermediate I use most. This is if I remember 5' long. They last for ever. But being tapered helps a bit with turn over, but most of all its more about presentation. In flat water when surface tension is high, the braid will help take the tippet down, or through the surface. Moving small unweighted patterns, which I do a lot of. Can be moved faster and still maintain that depth which can be critical. But what I do is have the floater, Intermediate and slow sink. This means when we fish big waters I can fish light. I don't need a load of lines, such as sink tips. All I do is swap the braid, which is loop to loop. Hope this helps. They are cheap enough, so if they don't work for you, then you will not break the bank. Some of the boys use them and others don't. A lot depends on what and how you fish.

Tell you what my flies are not the best when in close view. The fishing flies for fish are always ruff. The show room fly is for the fisherman. If you fish for stock fish just make them flashy. But always have a good few naturals for those difficult days. Resident fish can be caught on flashy, but more often its the naturals that do the bizz. Oh and small. @shaunfishes101  Před rokem +1

      Have heard quite a few people getting better results with the smaller lure. Justin's lure is only about 1" long. Yes the Ellerdine Mongrel has been a fluke of a pattern. Called Ellerdine as it was tied for that purpose. Mongrel due to the fritz. This is how it came about. Black and green being the biggest fish catcher for most waters. The Blob being a successful pattern. Olive is also favorable. So it was simple. The dark strip on the olive marabou. Bulk it up for a better silhouette. Put the blob in lime green on. So really its a Blob with a wing. It does not catch every time, but it is a damn good pattern. And I am talking resident fish, not stock fish. Was Fishing with Gareth a week or so ago. He came down to Hayscastle for a chill day. And yes he caught on the Mamba. Thanks for the comment Graeme. Take care mate. Shaun.

Spend all my time now on still waters. Garn back in the day used to have land lock Salmon, perhaps you may remember and may be fished for them. He's English but has lived in NZ for a long time and is a professional guide. There is very little still water fishing to compare with the UK, no private fisheries and it is illegal to sell trout (so not available in restaurants!). Plenty of good lakes but all pretty big so a boat is the best bet. I started fishing for trout when I was 8 or 9 in the River Dare which here would be called a stream. That was with a worm and I progressed to fly a bit later in life. Used to fish the many reservoirs around my area and lots of private fisheries. Hi thanks for the videos that's great. So I just have a comment. The ties that you were making for the damsels look fine if you just look at them and not think in your head how do they compare to what a damsel would look like in the water. Those are about three sizes longer than a damsel and definitely about 15 sizes in diameter of a damsel and then two you've got an awful lot of hook shank that doesn't move at all before you start to see some Bend in the fly pattern when it's wet and working in the water. I have tremendous good fishing with the damsels in Colorado when they're hatching and I always make something that's very sparse compared to yours I might put a small bead head on and I usually tie on something similar to either a scud hook or maybe a egg hook a hook that you might tie egg patterns on and so it's very short and then from there I have a Marabou tail and and I just barely retrieved any faster than I have to to keep my line tight and I just get slaughtered by the fish all the time. I'm not saying that anything bad about your flies other than they look more like Willie buggers than a Marabou pattern I mean the damsel pattern I think if you look up Dave Whitlock damsel pattern you would see what I'm thinking of or something very similar at least I do make a lot of my own patterns but of course they're taking somebody else's and then adding my own spin to them most of the time

    • @shaunfishes101
      @shaunfishes101  Před rokem +1

      You are absolutely correct. It is nothing like a damsel. But over here somehow the pattern of the damsel has evolved to the likes of this. I have got a proper damsels and there is no marabou in it at all. And its total length is about 20mm and about 4mm diameter. It has lead wire built in, and when finished it looks like the real thing. I have caught a few fish on it. But its not a killer like yours. Movement of marabou in the water is more restricted by bulk. Put a bit less in and it works fine. The hook size is down to the way these patterns are often fished. A fast retrieve to provoke the fish to attack, hence a solid take, which requires a bigger hook. Smaller hooks ends up with tail nipping. It could have a smaller hook, but then would be better fished at a much slower pace as you do. So back to why I call these a damsel. Is more down to what they are referred to over here. Not sure what your Buzzers are like over there. But have you seen ours over here. Now that's confusing. Loved the comment. And great to hear of your thoughts. Take care. Shaun.

      Hi Agustin thanks for the watch and comment. I use a lot of lines. But what I use most for a floater is Rio Single Hand Spey Slick cast. And an Intermediate which is again Rio Aqua 2. Really good lines if the budget goes that far. Thanks again mate. Shaun.

I may be trying much the same but with the lighter olive. Thanks for your support Andrew. Take care mate. Shaun.
