SSL 192 ~ Shascha hit by dinghy while snorkelling.. during preparations for Tropical Storm DON

  • Shascha had a VERY close call when struck by a dinghy in the anchorage yesterday, she was snorkelling over the anchor as we were resetting it in preparation for the arrival of Tropical Storm DON which was due in just a few short hours... she was INCREDIBLY lucky that she wasn't just one foot closer or the prop would have gone right down her back and ripped her to shreds...
This is purely an example of what can happen even when you think everyone is paying attention, it is no fault of anyone, and no blame is being laid, but illustrates a warning to all to exercise extreme caution in the water, whether swimming or snorkelling or driving a dinghy in a busy anchorage.
    STAY SAFE OUT THERE EVERYONE!
    Cheers,
    Captain Rick & Crew

Shascha handled this like a really strong trouper. She also demonstrated humility and forgiveness. Well done Shascha. I believe that gentleman was truly sorry, and was mortified by the many possibilities. Well done by all. Shascha needs some ice on her leg, and a few day of pampering. Peace to all of you with great fondness.

I was raised on the water, being from Minnesota, as my dad used to be the President of the boat club and taught both my brother and I everything he knew about boating and water safety. As we did a lot of water skiing we learned to be aware of everything and everyone in and out of the water around us at all times. I use those same skill even when I drive my car now. My son learned those skills as a schoolbus driver. Situational awareness we call it. I taught my son to even be aware of what is going on in his side vision and even what is going on behind him by paying attention to all of his senses.

hr 777 OUCH! Since I've never been on a ski slope, I have no idea if there is any way that could have been prevented or not. Some accidents just seem to come out of nowhere with out any warning. There isn't much you can do about them if you can't see them coming.

That was too close for comfort! I am so glad Shascha is ok it could have been so much worse. I could tell the young man felt horrible and was scared as well. My kudos to him he did come back and check on her. Was nice he brought her some gifts as well, but I am sure the fact that he came back said enough. We all know accidents can happen. Best advise here is always pay attention when moving to what is in front of you. Stop moving if there is a side distraction. Cheers and always look forward to the videos. So glad you are alright, it has always been a phobia of mine to get run over by a boat while snorkeling! Based on the barnacle scrapes on your upper back and those cuts being perpendicular to the cuts on your upper leg (plus their length and pattern) there is no doubt that the prop touched your leg. It is almost miraculous that you weren't more seriously injured!

Shascha is awesome. She is a huge asset to the program Rick. Who else would be cleaning something often neglected as a TS approaches? She is fit, attractive and works hard to do her part. She seems to have learned the ropes effectively. I suspect you could do a whole lot worse. Dear God, that could have been a disastrous accident! I'm very happy everyone got a chance to learn something and that no one actually got badly hurt. Hope the storm passed safely. It seems to be a remnant low pressure system today thankfully.

I got hit by a prop in a diving accident in Egypt a few years back. I can still hear the prop hitting my cylinder then ripping my buoyancy compensator to shreds then hitting me.
It’s a long story, but I finished up sinking into the depths on a drop-off, with no fins, no mask, weight belt still on and my compensator in tatters. It felt like I had been hit four or five times in my hip and thigh with a very large hammer. Oh, and we were at this particular site to dive with the sharks and I was bleeding.
I’m glad Shascha is OK. It’s a wakeup call to the dangers of snorkelling near your vessel. It makes me shudder sometimes when you see Jet Skis hurtling through anchorages.

I can see how, with the bow of his dingy being raised so high out of the water that he couldn't see her straight in front of him. I can also see how he didn't see her snorkeling before he started to head her way. A fluorescent snorkel would have been much more visible. I leave on vacation for a few days and look what I miss!!! That part of the video was pretty intense and put me on the edge of my seat. Good to hear you're OK Sascha.

Shascha, I am so glad the injuries weren't worse. I wish you fast healing and a speedy recovery. You will have to stay out of the water for a while as immersion will slow the dermis healing time. A diver flag would on not made a difference here. The boat pilot was not paying attention in a harbor.

Sascha has the most gorgeous legs EVER. Glad they weren't cut any worse than that. Glad she didn't get sucked into the prop. Luck was definitely on her side that day. She sure was a trooper about the accident afterwards. Sascha you obviously have great character. 👍

OMG!!! Shascha I'm glad your going to be OK! Thank God!!!
So Frightening, that definitely could have been much worse. Barnacle scratches on the shoulder for sure and prop on the leg. Just keep clean and dry and apply antibiotic ointment. Definitely get a dive flag float . Rick I still flinched when she was hit even with the advisory.
BE SAFE FROM BOATS AND THE STORM.

So thankful Shascha injuries weren't any worse. Felt badly for her and the gentleman that accidentally hit her with the dinghy. Accidents happen, unfortunately. Also hope you weather the storm without much too much problem or worry. All the best to you all!!!

Sure glad she's alright. Close call. I always worry about jet skier's running over people.
