  • Do you have a cold air draught coming from your window? If so then you may need to change the rubber seal in your UPVC window, over time these can become compressed and prevent the window from sealing properly. So before you think about new windows give this a try!

    Good video. 1 thing to add - the seal you're using is known as offset bubble seal. The 'fatter' part of the bubble should be installed towards the outer edge of whatever you're installing it to. This ensures more surface area/sealing contact when the window or door is closed 👍
    Keep up the good work Fowler.

    I got new windows fitted last September, they are shocking, I was fitter around Glasgow / Central Belt area for 3 years back around 2007 - when the installers left I had a good lookover their work, they did do a decent job tbf all bar the inside of one window, that one window was done by Stevie Wonder ''some random fitter that showed up'' the silicone job he done was really terrible, something I'll address when I decorate next time, I have a double window in the living room and one of them makes a very annoying noise when it's windy, had a few return visits but I'm now sick of hearing the crap they talk.
    When the weather improves I'll fix that window myself.

    Seems a straight forward job. I was surprised that the corners were not cut to form the shape better, but that risks letting water in, so if you can get them round the radius, it’ll be better.
    One thing I would caution though is to be prepared for the weight of the window if you’re unscrewing it. They can be very heavy and it’s easy to bend or deform the hinges when they’re partially attached. Been there, done that, …

    • @FixitwithFowler
      @FixitwithFowler  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Yeah, i agree about the weight of the window. However, this can be done without taking the window out!

  • @neilhurley3995
    @neilhurley3995 Před 3 měsíci +2

    Important safety note: because hinges take the load well and we casually open/close windows with ease it's easy to forget these things can be heavy! Double glazing weighs around 20kg per sqm. Add to that the frame and locking mech (and perhaps lead!) and you could soon be hanging out of an upstairs window with a casement that weighs the same as a full suitcase - at arms length.
    You won't know how much it weighs until you've removed your last screw whilst holding the window with one hand. For your first I advise not being alone and make sure nothing or nobody is beneath the window you're working on 👍

    • @FixitwithFowler
      @FixitwithFowler  Před 3 měsíci +2

      I did say on the video that ou don,t need to remove the window but i have just to make this video clearer. You are right they can be heavy and it is definetly easier with 2 people!

      @neilhurley3995 Před 3 měsíci +1

      Hi John, I think Steve got the wrong end of the stick about your query. Here's a couple of pointers:
      If your windows are internally glazed (glazing/bead removed inside) then there's not much you can do about changin seal that meets the glazing as they're usually integral.
      If your windows are older and externally glazed the internal seal touching the glass is known as a wedge gasket. These are easily replaceable and can be pryed out gently with a stiff scraper. Once removed you need to measure the resultant gap (mm) and search online for wedge gaskets. Loads of companies supply so just give them your measurement. If you're not confident in measuring you can send them a small cutting off the end of your gasket so they can match the profile. I hope this helps.

    Company I worked for used bloody pop rivets instead of screws for speed of fabrication...Can u imagine the damage to the plastic trying to drill them out .....

    Should hopefully give people the confidence to do it themselves
