  • The Keeneland Library exhibit features two enlarged photographs on opposite walls. The first, taken in 1891 at the Coney Island Racetrack, showcases a period of opportunity for black jockeys, including Tony Hamilton, Isaac Murphy, Shelby Pike Barnes, and Willie Sims. Despite racial challenges, the image reflects camaraderie among competitors.
In contrast, the 1908 photograph at the Westchester Racing Association in New York tells a different story. With only one black jockey, Jimmy Lee, present, it highlights the decline in representation and opportunities for black jockeys over the years. This shift occurred around five years after 1891 when some black jockeys, facing increasing pressures, decided to explore racing overseas.
The exhibit captures not only the changes in representation but also the resilience of black jockeys like Jimmy Lee, who, despite systemic challenges, emerged as a powerhouse, winning prestigious races and setting records that endured for decades. This contrast provides a poignant narrative of the evolving landscape and struggles faced by black jockeys in the world of horse racing.
