  • In this video Doctor O'Donovan explains treatment options for vitiligo.
    What is vitiligo?
Vitiligo is a chronic condition in which areas of skin lose their normal pigment and become very pale, white or light pink. The amount of skin affected by vitiligo and the speed at which it spreads are unpredictable, varying from single small patches to a total loss of skin colour.
What treatment options are available for vitiligo?
In this video we cover many of the treatment options that are available including the use of SPF, topical corticosteroids, calcineurin inhibitors, oral steroids, phototherapy, as well as more specialist options like surgery and excimer laser treatment.
    Skin camouflage for vitiligo:
Skin camouflage creams can be applied to the white patches of skin. The creams are made to match a range of skin tones. The cream helps to blend the white patches with the rest of your skin, so they are not as noticeable.
    Topical steroids for vitiligo:
Topical steroids come as a cream or ointment you apply to your skin. They can sometimes stop the spread of the white patches and may restore some of your original skin colour.
    Phototherapy:
Phototherapy (treatment with light) may be used for children or adults if:
    1. topical treatments have not worked
    2. the vitiligo is widespread
    3. the vitiligo is having a significant impact on your quality of life
Evidence suggests that phototherapy, particularly when combined with other treatments, has a positive effect on vitiligo.

Doctor great video. I got diagnosed recently with no segmental vitiligo only in my face (3 areas) and I got 2 creams protopic and Elidel for day and night. Is true that my immune system will be compromised and I’ll get sick easily? Also what about cancer risk with this treatment?
    Thanks for your advice
