Extreme India - Cow Vigilantes, Disabled Dating & More: • Extreme India: Cow Vig...
It’s one of the most populous cities on the planet with 22 million inhabitants, predicted to increase to 30 million by 2035. Nicknamed ‘the infernal Metropolis’, Mumbai is a city in perpetual development. But with millions of people living in slums located on valuable real estate, how can city planners balance the competing needs of the population?
In Dharavi, the largest slum in Asia, over one million people are packed into the 2 km. slum. But although its residents are poor, there’s a real dynamism. Mahesh, 27, was born and lives in this slum and would never leave it. He runs a recycling plant and employs around 20 people. Dharavi’s underground economy is thought to generate 800 million euros per year. But it also lies on prime real estate in the very centre of Mumbai so its future is in doubt.
Every day, new towers of glass or concrete emerge from the earth. With the support of the municipality, real estate tycoon, Babulal Varma, razes slums to build luxury apartments for the upper classes. As the city constantly expands, it pushes into the surrounding forests and natural spaces, such as Sanjay Gandhi Park. The fifty leopards who live there regularly make forays into the new housing estates. They attack stray dogs, but also the inhabitants. Each year, several people are killed by feline attacks. At night, forest department rangers patrol to prevent leopard incursions.

The richest family in town resides in a 250-square-meter home. They have their own staff to attend to their needs. While they live in a rather stylish house, they prefer to eat with their hands instead of using knives and forks.

@@connormcload9091 Why should they? I was married to a Hindu and lived in his world for 7 years. I learned to eat with my hands and the food tasted much better, without a mouthful of steel. Our kids ate that way too. Later when I returned to NZ I found it hard to use a knife and fork again, it spoiled the taste of the food.

@@Juanita-gf4te It's quite shocking that you even ask why. But since you did, I'll answer. The reason surgeries aren't done in hospitals with kitchen knives or other primitive tools, and why normal civilized folks use flush toilets and running water, is hygiene. Hygiene is key, and eating with your hands is basically stomping on hygiene with your feet. The fact that I had to explain this is just appalling.

@@cw4608lol, thirst for power and what you call "greed" is ingrained in all of us humans with varying degrees. It's the instinct to be in control and be better. This isn't "greed" it's ambition, and this instinct is not going away any time soon. So instead of whining, why not try to be better and more powerful yourself? As for the sense of superiority, I believe it's directly proportional to your advancement and success as a nation. The more advanced the more you have deep pride in yourself. This doesn't mean we should treat others disdainfully tho, but having pride in one's own self and achievement is good
