To remember what people went through to protect, defend, and create our country is being forgotten. To participate in keeping our history alive is a great gift. How awesome! The greatest gift I have ever received was a package that came without warning, in the mail 15 years ago. It was MY paternal family history going back to 1635!!!

In the area surrounding Kings Mountain, Cow Pens, and that historic battlefield, the history has been routinely taught by trips to those sites, including people like that gentleman, telling them that history in a first person narrative. At least it was when my grandchildren were still in school. God only knows what my great grandchildren will be taught. The oldest of them is in the 1st grade now.

My ancestor, Hugh Rogers fought at the Battle of King's Mountain. Before he went into battle he met a young lady by the name of Nancy Thornton, whose father, Col. John Thornton was running a munitions depot at the time ( Nancy was assisting) and also served under Lafayette during the Cornwallis campaign. Nancy's mother was Jane Augusta Washington Thornton, daughter of Augustine Washington Jr., George Washington's elder half brother and Ann Aylett Washington . The story goes that Hugh fell in love with Nancy at first sight when the men stopped at the depot after Nancy offered him a drink of water and vowed to marry her after the battle. He did and they eventually settled in Fine's Creek on the NC/ Tennessee border where she gave birth to 12 children. I descend from the eldest, John Rogers.

Oh my precious friend. I am 68 years old and have attended may POW WOW'S and reenactments. But sadly it has been many years. I have been an "old time" master herbalist for many many years and of Cherokee and Shawnee, Scotch-Irish and Italian blood. Quite a combo but I am proud of every gene my people have blessed me with. I traditionally wear a white oil tanned buckskin dress that has won me awards for it's beauty. (not my beauty...strictly the dress lol ) It was an anniversary gift from my husband who is Cherokee, and Welsh. I miss those days of honoring those that have gone before us. . I can't tell you how watching this episode has blessed me. It brought me to tears and has taken me back many years. Thank you my precious friend and sister in Christ Jesus for all you do. WE will be the survivors. I too come from people such as these and we are passing on our history, real history. We have patriotism in our veins. It's there and it still burns bright. THAT is why I still have hope and with God's help, we will come out of this on the other side. Try as they might, those that seek to destroy will not stop what was started by our Founders and "just plain folks". Be blessed and stay vigilant. Wow! That man is a heck of a storyteller! I was riveted, hanging on every word! I wish he could repeat that story for every student in this country to hear bc he described patriotism, & the priceless value of freedom. But for that, we wouldn't be Americans, & we've lost touch w/the integrity of those tough men who gave it their all, & persevered. We can't hold onto our country w/complacency, yet that's what we have -apatht & cognitive dissonance. Only tragedy seems to bring us together, & most ppl can't see we're facing that right now bc our own government has sold us out. This is what our founders feared, & WE have always been the last defense of freedom. If we don't value & protect that, then all these brave men will have died for nothing.

Columbia is a State Historical Park. No cars are allowed to drive through downtown Columbia. Every business is run just as it was in 1849 through 1860's. This video was excellent! Thank you so much for sharing this with us. Interestingly enough, a great book to read that shares the story that you related is Patrick K O’Donnell’s “Washington’s Immortals”. The author quoted one of the Overmountain backwoodsman who later bragged, “We were formidable
.Our equals were scarce, and our superiors hard to find.” This video brought that to life for us! May America have men and women like them once again! God bless you and “huzzah” to all who have the spirit of the Overmountain men!

I love when individuals speak history and they are wearing clothing and reenacting what had occurred in history. Talk about a moving history board.. that's definitely what kids nowadays should be and how they should be taught. Love the video thank you so much for showing us and sharing with us

Oh my goodness that was awesome Patara, thanks for sharing!! The paternal side of my family is from various areas of NC. My Dad did our genealogy back to the 1700's I believe it was, before he passed in '99, and I knew all the way back to my great great grandpa were NC military folks but I've absolutely no idea where/what kind of service they were involved in. A friend of my Mom's was doing my Mom's genealogy and somehow found that I'm a DAR. I SO wish I knew what part my ancestors played in the settling of NC. Thank you so much for taking us along for the ride on this history lesson!! God bless!!
