Sorting the Doctor into Hogwarts Houses (Doctor Who Meets Harry Potter)

  • Sometimes it's just fun to mash up your preferred fandoms. So today, for no reason other than I just want to, I'm going to mash together the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Doctor Who. And I'm going to do it by sorting every incarnation of the Doctor (all fourteen to date) into one of the Hogwarts houses. So who will end up in Gryffindor? What about Slytherin? Ravenclaw must be home to a few. Any in Hufflepuff? Well, let's find out and let the angry disagreements commence, because when I'm bringing together two easily riled fandoms I can't imagine it's going to be polite agreement with what I'm about to lay out.

      Eddie Redmayne channeling Matt Smith was glorious to see. Newt is one of my favorite male leads in a movie because he subverts or just ignores so much of what the audience EXPECTS male leads to be. He's not an action hero, he's not outgoing and confident. He's just a guy with lots of book smarts and a lot of love in his heart. My feelings for the latest movie aside, I love Newt to death.

The joy at being able to save everyone for once really invigorates him for the remainder of the season. It's also literally my favorite moment from the show's entire history. So, I agree. Hufflepuff.

    You mentioned a lot of Hufflepuff at the end, and I think there is a reason for that trend as the Doctor obviously went through a lot in the Time War. It is as if he is trying to hold himself to higher moral standard after everything he has seen. I think that the Doctor's character involves traits from all houses, but I think that Hufflepuff is the one fartherst from his natural instincts after the war. That is why he feels it to be the most important. It is as if he is continually going against his inate nature and choosing Hufflepuff. And in the end, it is our choices far more than our abilities that determine who we are.
    We see this again and again in the NewWho Doctors. You mentioned Nine's choice in Parting of the Ways. But Ten also made a similar decision in the Sontaran two-parter, when he gives up his tactical advantage as he decides to go back on the ship and risk being destroyed himself only to make sure that he gives them a fair choice. When Eleven talks about "good men don't need rules", it talks to his darker impulses and his discipline to keep them in check. But it is perhaps seen clearest in Twelve, with his obsession with being "a good man", and also when he explains that it isn't about winning, but rather what is right and decent and kind. These are the Doctor's driving motivations. Without hope, without witness, without reward.
    I believe that the Doctor (or at least most of the latest incarnations) would all want to be sorted into Hufflepuff, since that is the definition of being "the Doctor" inside the Doctor's own mind.

      Honestly, ive only seen 9-11, I'm trying to catch up by finishing 11's chronologically, and I have to agree. The doctor seems to be trying to cling to Hufflepuff traits as it's imo the most empathetic traits. I even get a sense that 10 is a bit of a Hufflepuff, but I totally agree hes a Gryffindor bc of his confidence. Watching 10 I very much got the vibe that he really loves humans and the worlds in general and wants to protect them, but he does have that cocky grandiose of a Gryffindor.

    • @Kaiularalei
      @Kaiularalei Před 4 lety +9

      That would also explain why from 9 onwards there's a noticeable lack of any slytherin incarnations. The war doctor was, by necessity, a slytherin so it would make sense that all the incarnations of the doctor after him would instinctively shy away from any characteristics related to that version of themselves.
      Also it's interesting that before the war doctor, slytherin was the more common house in general, with even some of the others placed elsewhere having slytherin potential, yet that completely vanished afterwards.

      Luna is superficially scientific in a very left field, unconventional and illogical way. She knows things that turn out to be true and real, its just that most people are new or uninitiated or blind to the phenomena and theories she presents. Her whole family are devoted to experiments and heedless of risks involved. The Fourth Doctor has sufficient courage and self-esteem and comradeship to be a Gryffindor but is in practice always distracted in a very Ravenclaw manner and not very deeply people-oriented. Reminds me of Hermione in blending the two aspects, but he is, like Luna, interested in strange phenomena and prone to very dodgy ad hoc theories, AKA making things up, while collecting data. 12th Doctor very like, only he tends to persevere in his quirky investigations to find deeper details, and this makes him more grounded, more accountable to rationality and more capable of feelings toward unusual characters that impress him. I would tend to buy to notion that Missy commands his loyalty due to their shared roots and heritage than to a sense of experimentalism. 12 and Clara really got into each other's heads and hidden personality traits and this led to an almost dangerous co-dependence with each manipulating the other to new excess, so they shared Slytherin tendencies, at least he chose to relate to Clara's Slytheriness.
      Well down below others argue Four is totally Slytherin and I can see that. His lunacy and distraction could all be an act to get others to dismiss him. I remember when he ran for President of Gallifrey to escape charges, and everyone totally bought his being drunk on power. I wonder if Trump is a Slytherin now.

He asked for a warrior, if you want a warrior you don't go to slytherin, slytherins are spies, assassins, tacticians and officers, they make the plans, give the orders, hunk every detail through a play it smart, taking as few risks as possible. A warrior is a Gryffindor, strong at heart, never scared to run into a battle whenever necessary.

The 9th doctor presented himself as ruthless and dark but when it came to it, he chose to die a coward than kill everyone. I feel 13 might be dark but present herself as kind as 12 said to be kind before he regenerated. But I feel she has some bad morales suffocating those spiders and willing to sacrifice Ryan's dad and not caring for people's feelings like when Ryan got slapped or Graham lost Grace. In the Family of Blood two part story he gives the family a chance, but in the end he is outright mean and nasty by giving them what they want. His relationship with Martha is a very selfish one. He may be oblivious about Marthas feelings for him, but he keeps Martha around, because he wants someone by his side first and only to show Martha the wonders of the Universe as an afterthought. In turn left you see what Ten would be without someone showing him the right path. In Waters of Mars he gives in to his superiority Complex. Ten is a Slytherin, who is kept in check by the people around him.
    AND you forgot to sort the Valeyard (and maybe the Dreamdoctor) since he is an incarnation of the Doctor.

      RedClaw87 I would argue that Ten had the Griffindor’s hubris. Slytherin’s self assuredness comes from the idea that they personally are better than everyone else. Griffindor’s arrogance comes from the belief that they are infallibly on the right side. Ten always considered himself on the moral high ground. Not the most powerful, the most right.

    • @JoshuaHillmanatorHillman
      @JoshuaHillmanatorHillman Před 5 lety +23

      I would argue that ten was a literal Harry Potter case. He had elements of both Gryffindor, through his belief in his own moral high ground, as seen when confronting Harriet Jones, but he also just thinks he’s inherently better than people, and acts like a Slytherin, as shown through his initial treatment of Mickey, him disregarding the laws of time in Waters of Mars, and him saying to Lumic “I’d call you a genius except I’m in the room. He even tries to talk his way out of everything and quests for knowledge like a Ravenclaw. I think it’d be a Hat stall, followed by the hat placing him in either Gryffindor or Slytherin, as per his choice, and 10 would choose Gryffindor.

    • @inkmaster5480
      @inkmaster5480 Před 5 lety +11

      I would disagree with the point of The Fires of Pompeii. In that episode he doesn't initially leave because he doesn't care about the people of Pompeii. He obviously does, all you have to do is look at him to see that. He doesn't save anyone because he thinks that he can't, and so he doesn't try. Donna finally convinces him to because she makes him realize that he could at least save _someone_ , even if he can't save everybody. He keeps Martha around not just because he wants someone to travel with, but because he likes her and wants her to travel with him. He only realizes that he needs someone to travel with him either while or after Martha traveled with him. It wasn't so much that he didn't have morals, just that he sometimes lost track of what they were. He lets his rage get the better of him, which I would argue is a very Gryffindor trait to have. Admittedly he was a bit arrogant and cocky, which is a very Gryffindor trait, but it wasn't so much of a superiority complex until he couldn't stand to hear people dying when he knew that he could do something about it, even though it meant breaking the rules. In breaking the rules it temporarily made him think that he was above the rules, until Captain Brooke's suicide snapped him out of it. Also, by the Dreamdoctor, do you mean the Dream Lord?

And saying he “chooses his companions very carefully” doesn’t feel right since the only person he said “no” to was Mickey in the first episode.
      Twelve uses his wit to scare people more often than Eleven does. Eleven doesn’t really use his words to scare people. It happened in his first episode, but that was after he already did something to end the threat. Almost every episode he succeeds in is from his actions and not his talking. Twelve on the other hand has spoken his way out of a few situations. It’s not every time he succeeds, but with the Zygons, the Mummy, Missy and a couple of others, it’s his words that win the day.

    I would Argue that Smith really isn't anywhere near to a Hufflepuff because of what is under his childlike outward appearance. The Troughton did it because he wanted his enemies to underestimate him, but Smith did it because he couldn't live with what he became in the time war. You can see that at any moment he can snap into an ruthless and brutal Slytherin. The moment anything puts him under duress, he just has to finish his goal no matter what. In his second episode he has to choose what to do with the star whale and you can tell how furious he is with everyone when he finds out what's going on. His childlike glee drops and he channels his inner 5th Davison and tries to do what he thinks is right, no matter the cost to the star whale. Next episode when he sees a Dalek he completely loses his mind and starts whacking it with a spanner. In A Good Man Goes To War you have the entire Colonel Runaway scene and the "good men don't need rules, today's not the day I find out why I have so many" line. He wants to be a Hufflepuff but deep down he knows that no matter how hard he tries he still thinks he killed almost two and a half billion children. I'd argue that 10 is a Ravenclaw. Yes he's very brash, cocky, and full of himself...but at the same time he LOVES a good mystery. He's always trying to figure stuff out and finding solutions to the situations he's in. To me that says Ravenclaw

    I don't know very much of anything about Harry Potter.
    I have simply come to commend you for bringing your geekdom to a whole new level.
    I have also come to commend all those who would argue the rules to this just invented game.
    Congratulations to all!

    I mostly agree, except for our current doctor. My sorting hat had a hat-stall and allowed her to decide between Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw. That intense exploratory nature fits both houses, and while she definitely cares about her friends (which led to the Hufflepuff idea), if you look at the first few episodes, she was originally trying to immediately leave and just do her own thing (which is very Ravenclaw).
    It's too early in her run for me to know which house she chose.

      @Rebecca Woolf Ah. Ravenclaw with Hufflepuff tendencies here (although not at hat-stall levels; my Ravenclaw is clearly dominant, while my Hufflepuff is decent and decidedly higher than the other two houses). I can buy it that she'd be Hufflepuff with Ravenclaw tendencies. As I said, my sorting hat had a hat-stall, so I'd find it believable if she had something around 40-40 Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw, and either could be more Hufflepuff like you or more Ravenclaw (but still more like you since I'm dominant Ravenclaw). But I do think she's got both at high and near-equal levels. Which is cool, 'cause both houses are awesome! :)

      This is the problem with trying to sort _any_ Doctors into anything but Ravenclaw, though, isn't it? The Doctor in general almost always has strong Gryffindor and Ravenclaw leanings - and, depending on whether you favour the cosmic superhero angle to/interpretation of them or the mysterious traveller one, you could easily make the case that the Doctor in all is a Gryffindor or a Ravenclaw. So I think, to some degree, these tendencies have to be corrected for if we're to have an interesting discussion about sorting individual Doctors. And, as a Ravenclaw (with tendencies from all other houses) - I don't think Thirteen really has (pronouncedly) _more_ of a Ravenclaw streak than many/most of the other Doctors, so I think Hufflepuff is a better fit.
      I still think you can sort Doctors into Gryffindor and Ravenclaw with this system, mind you! I sort Ten into Gryffindor and Twelve into Ravenclaw (with tendencies from all other houses - one of the most likely Doctors to be a hatstall, IMO). That's because Ten has an even stronger Gryffindor streak than _most_ Doctors do - and it's evident that it informs, to a greater extent, his personal philosophy - while Twelve's personal philosophy has more Ravenclaw elements to counterbalance the Gryffindor ones than most Doctors ever seem to do... and he was mostly a Slytherin-type character in his earlier days, something he retained a few edgy qualities from - but later on, he developed a lot more into holding tight to Gryffindor-esque and Hufflepuff-ish morals and sensibilities and never letting them go.

    The 11th doctor, Newt Scamander, and Merlin. These three characters have so much in common.
    The wisdom and knowledge to be a Ravenclaw
    The ability to get oneself into trouble that can only present on a Gryffindor.
    And they are definitely Hufflepuffs.
