    you know shipping companies put your products well being at the top of their list when you find a size 12 imprint right over the 'fragile handle with care' stamp on the box and when you pick it up, a gentle melody of tinkling glass against metal assures you that all is well

      To be fair, loaders pay attention at the start of the shift. But when its the end of the day. And you've got two more trailers left to go. And its the holidays so they've got you working 6 out of 7 days instead of the normal 5. And you have to show up two hours early because your site is way behind since orders are crazy.
      Well, that's usually when size 12 imprint over the "fragile handle with care" stamp can happen.

      @@robertkeaney9905 Completely understood on the attitude when overworked - but it isn't an excuse to damage or mistreat peoples items. I had a delivery of a motherboard where the worker frisbeed the box from their car on to my porch - the board didn't make it - he didn't expect me to open the door as it was in the air. It was likely not the first time it was mishandled on its journey to me. Thankfully it wasn't a Newegg motherboard lol.

    I used to manage a UPS Store, and remember thoroughly training my gamer associates on how to pack/crate customer PCs with care like this. We never got a claim for a damaged computer that we packed. I’m glad we took the PC packing super seriously because, as Jay mentions, there is a 100% chance that other UPS and shipping locations will not

    • @jamesfstokes
      @jamesfstokes Před 2 lety +6

      Yep, you never know the level of packing your items will reicve. It may receive excellent care and attention, but it is equally possible that you could get a store that does not pack things as carefully.
      I think that making sure to pack expensive items like a PC or other fragile electronic items well is a good idea since they are expensive and it would be a pain to have to deal with the claims process along with the frustrated or angry customer...

    • @toddsmithselbow1732
      @toddsmithselbow1732 Před 2 lety +4

      Yeah because when those things are getting loaded at a UPS hub people are standing on them and hucking them around with no care. And that's after they're flying down belts and getting jammed up with hundreds of pounds of other packages down chutes. You have to really pack stuff good, people just send $1,000 monitors and PC's in their OG packaging. And I would see them with holes punched in the boxes from them getting speared by other sphere packages.

    Fun fact, if you take a pc to the distribution center of like a Fedex for example, you could have it "crated" and from past experiences i've had water cooled PC's shipped cross-country without them inspecting the box. Maybe they are more lenient because they have it on a crate. Not too sure but yeah, maybe this is an option for some people to look into!

      JS i have had friends pay to use that, and the PC arrived "crated" in a single layer unpadded cardboard box, with all the internals totally destroyed by the gpu and cooler which had both ripped off (yay intel pushpins). I'd never trust them to pack something like a modern gaming PC properly, double so if the case has tempered glass anywhere on it.

      It isn't just these guys that can destroy equipment. In one company, I shipped a $80K digital imaging system to a customer in Mexico. The equipment arrived upside down and destroyed. The fiber laser alone cost $15K when sold separately. This wasn't a small unit either. The crate was about 6-1/2 feet high X 4 feet long and weighed about 1500 lbs.

    As someone who used to work for FedEx, I love computers, so I always packed with the utmost care. And as a little pro tip, after the instapack "splooge" you can spread it across the entire bag so it properly fills out the whole thing. If you just let it splooge and leave it, it usually just fills half the bag, forcing you to use more of them. (Like what happened where it didn't go beneath the graphics card.) Also, another tip, don't use moving/storage boxes to ship, those things are pathetic and puncture/collapse easily.

    • @th3R0b0t

      @@th3R0b0t If you’re actually shipping it then yeah that’s definitely a good idea. If it’s just going in the car with you though moving boxes are fine. And never forget to look at it and say “yep, that’s not going anywhere.”

    Yeah, the most important part of shipping/moving a PC is to keep the original case packaging and use that as your starting point. Inconvenient if you don't have any place to store it, but it was literally designed to protect the exact shape of the case without damage. So if you keep that starting point, you're way ahead of the game. Same for monitors, TVs, etc.
    A related but different topic: when moving a PC from one place to another, a wheeled cart seems like a great idea ... with caveats. First, gravity still happens, so never put the PC upright on the cart because it can topple. Put it on its side. Preferably on a piece of foam or padding because... Second, carts don't have suspension. All those jarring little vibrations transfer to the PC components. REALLY bad for mechanical spinning-rust hard drives which have tiny moving parts. Carrying by hand, using the human body as a suspension system can be a LOT safer, especially with older PCs. But because handles rarely exist (and if they are, are almost never as strong as they seem) on PCs, any kind of strap (or rope) you can put around it to give yourself a secure hold on something as you move it is a huge plus if the case is too large or heavy to hold easily. And if tempered glass panels are on the case, when possible, remove those and carry them separately. They break easily, sometimes from the most seemingly innocuous things. Because tempered glass is under some weird pressures. Super strong ... until it explodes from a minor ding.

      Reminds me of when i ordered a corsair power supply from Amazon. UPS was the one who delivered the psu. And you could clearly see a puncture hole in the psu box. Which doesn't make sense considering the psu box is wrapped up in clear plastic wrap. So any UPS worker could tell that it was a computer part. And yet they poorly handled it. Luckily the psu works fine. But yeah shipping companies don't care. One of the reasons why you should always double box any pc or pc component.

    • @Royallblu
      @Royallblu Před 2 lety

      That could also happen at Amazon. When I was working there before Christmas I saw people yeeting dozens of PS4s into shipping-container_thingies. But hey why do you know there were PS4s in the package boxes? Well the packaging machine ran out of tape so 10-20% of the boxes weren't even closed properly.

    • @jamesfstokes
      @jamesfstokes Před 2 lety +1

      If you are shipping then definitely try and keep it protected with some extra packaging, but if you are going to transport it yourself then @Rob S has a some good points.
      Also if you have the PC Case box that will be very helpful from protecting the computer from getting dingged by accident while moving stuff around. If you can I would definitely recommend transporting in your care so you can keep a closer eye on it and ensure it stays safe, although there is also the risk of someone seeing the PC in your care while you are sleeping, so I would try and cover it like @Rob S mentions.

    I am a former UPS employee and I can say without a doubt, Jay has put forth the best package protection effort I have ever seen. Oh and a warning to anyone reading this, I know you may ship fragile contents and you may be tempted to have a Shock Sensor included on your package. Allow me to let you know first hand that almost any Unloader/Sorter who sees this, will fuck your package up. Not to be malicious, but purely for the "joy" of watching the shock sensor turn red. You've been warned.

      @@Bratfalken I imagine it depends on the employee. I have seen instances where they are handling the package and make it seem like the package "slipped" out of their hand as they handle it. They would primarily use just enough force applied directly to the Shock Sensor to turn it red. And then you had those blatant savages who would smash the packages. The more savage ones were usually very likely caught because management on occasion would randomly walk around and observe people.

    #1 Tip for packing and reusing a shipping box (along with all the great tips below) = ALWAYS re-tape the BOTTOM of the box as well as the top.
    Packages (esp large/heavy ones) tend to get abused on the bottom the most while slid around - So many times I've had things shipped and the bottom nearly busted through.
    I bought a playstation once and the seller reused a box, applied like 5 layers of tape on the top but left the original tape on the bottom. I received the box, but not the playstation... The box was super light and at first I thought they just shipped an empty box but then I realized the one flap on bottom was open (could tell it was ripped from going thru sorting machines). Yeah that was a fun claim to explain to ebay.. But I could prove that they used layers of tape on top, but left the original layer on the bottom - so it was poor packing.
    #2 Tip when shipping something expensive - always attach a printout of the buyer and sellers address and tape it directly to the item (or put inside) - this way if the package somehow gets torn up in the sorting machines or the shipping label is ripped off - the courier can still figure out where it goes. I usually put an entire copy of the shipping label inside the package, attached to the product.

    As someone that has been involved with designing the foam endcaps for shipping things like this... You don't have to fill the air gap in that interior box, especially if you're planning on putting it inside an outer box. The endcaps act as your absorption, if you overstuff the box and make the absorption effectively stiffer more force is transferred to the product. You are also packing it in such a way that weaker parts of the case, such as the middle of the side panel, will take a load rather than leaving that work to the strongest corners of the case. It will probably be fine, just need to keep in mind that more foam isn't always better. Insta-packing the gpu is on point though

If i had to move or something, i would pack some styrofoam in it, so parts don't move around and then just pack it in the original packaging it came from. And yes I keep ALL original packaging of my currently used parts...even the 48" TV.

    I used to use instapak in my job for years. It does not like to flow DOWN. We used a machine that we could select the bag size and foam amount and the best way to fill a box with instapak is to make sure the foam filled the bottom edge the laid it into the corner or edge so it could exnd against up/over whatever you had in the box. These kits might act differently but from my experience you got a better pack if you let it expand up and in. And to go over something, you just let the bag fold over the object and the foam will expand into the bag in that direction.
