Well that compressor is straight fire. It is so musical. I have an original LA-2A, and the search for a second has brought me to Audioscape. Wow. Hope I can somehow score one.

Good sounding unit. I think it's sweet spot is in the 2-3 dB range which you didn't spend a lot of time exploring. Other than that, it shined on vocals with the output pushed...which is what the 2A is known for, so yeah, nice unit, good review! Cheers
I'll be honest with you, if I'm doing 2-3db of gain reduction I'll just stick with a plug in. I know everyone works differently but hardware is where I go to push things beyond what I can get in the box 👍🏼. Thanks for checking out the video, cheers.
Great Review, thanks for doing this. I actually just bought one of their buss compressors, but haven't got a chance to dig into it yet. Ironically, I also got one of the Beesneez mics as well. I'm really liking it, and to my ears is an accurate representation of the vintage 87 it's intended to replicate.

Sounds great, thanks for the demo. Sounds good when you started to push the output, but I've tried to do this and the LA has so much gain that I find it hard to not clip my converters. Did you have something in the signal chain after the LA to reduce level to the A/D?
Thanks! I had it connected directly to my Avid HD I/O 16x16. I keep a close eye on the converter during this reviews to make sure it's never clipping. It had enough headroom thankfully to push the output of the Opto a bit. If your converter is clipping earlier than you like, I would definitely check into adding an attenuator in line just to make your Opto more flexible.

Thanks man! I appreciate you checking it out. My understanding of the HF control is that the more you turn it counter clock wise, the more low frequencies are filtered out of what goes to the T4B. In real world use I feel like more low end can be heard the further you turn it counter clock wise because it is focusing more on the just compressing high end. Hopefully @AudioScape Engineering Co. can chime in and make sure I'm not butchering the description here haha.

Ok, I think that I got the idea man, when you turn to rigth the compression is more focused on the High frecuencies so the lows passed with minor compression and are more present. Thanks and sorry for my english... Let's wait if Charlie has to say something hahaha
Yeah for the units that have a bypass switch I do that, but unfortunately this one doesn’t. I tried to start each example with no gain reduction so I hope you still got something useful from it though 👍🏻
Can you please provide dry and processed wav files for acoustic guitar and vocal ? You have so clean and great quality of recordings. I want to do A/B looking at gr in your videos with ITB plugins, the differences, with better detail inside DAW, before deciding for buying. Please. 🙂

It's not the most colorful compressor in the world but it does do gain reduction quite well which is sometimes exactly how you want it to work. I do, in general prefer more colorful vari mu style comps which you can find reviews of on my channel if you're interested!

I've had the pleasure of using both! I do love a good Sta Level style comp but it is a much thicker color than the Opto comp so if it's a color you like, you'll love it! If you need something with less of a sonic footprint, the Opto is definitely a good all around comp. When the Sta Level sound is right though, it's awfully hard to beat so it's definitely worth at least trying to see what you think! Solo'd maybe that's the "sweet spot" but in a mix, heavy compression would sound just fine.

Question: For Tracking Vocals, this or also your favorite retro 176?
176 for me. The tone & versatility is just unmatched in my opinion!
I wish you had opened up the unit. I find there isn't much to them as far as components compared to the original La2a.
