      I actually like producing into a bit of passive EQ on the master bus - Bax, Pultec, etc. Deals with the midrange muddiness early and makes boosting mid-range audibility more intuitive. Can easily hear what instrumental parts have low end and top end to remove to make room for vocals, drums, bass, etc. It's made my workflow faster.

  • @MZ-tm1tw
    @MZ-tm1tw Před 3 lety +1

    By using the transformer balanced Pultech Tube EQ you add Harmonic distortion and overtones to your mix that was not in the mix before passing it through the hardware. This can also be done with plug ins check RTA overtone content what happens when passed through UAD Eqp-1 pulltech or Waves EqP1 or Focusrite Liquid Mix old tube 3 eq Emulation based on EQH -2 3/4 band pultech EQ. For some slow songs when you don't need fast attack and relase settings LA2a can work on the masterbuss .You get very warm big sound with alot of Harmonic colour. If you want to balance it out run it in parallel compression so you can mix in how much La2a you want on your masterbuss.

    Interesting tape recorder he has there. It looks like the cheap Akai 4000D stretched into quadraphonic form. I don't remember seeing those in the 70s. Most of the quadraphonic machines at least had logic controls, and usually supported 10.5" spools. The most basic quadraphonic tape recorder I remember is the Sony one they made by stretching the TC366.

    Great vid - Passive EQ' i use are Eckmiller ( i have a few including hp/lp filters). Various RFZ ( i have a few) and 2 White instrument cut only graphics. Just as Mark said, so easy to over-boost thinking nothing happening, then you bypass and its "WOW". Also analogue passives keep the bass as tight as F phase wise - great for vinyl. I love active eq as-well but passives are my foundation eq's - always plenty boost and cut.

  • @ElMarko2000
    @ElMarko2000 Před 4 dny

    Beautiful song and Marc’s mix is like a warm blanket enveloping it. The passive eq on the master bus works so well here. Anyone else here would have preferred the snare placement on 4, rather than 3 & 6 though?

  • @searchiemusic
    @searchiemusic Před 3 lety +1

    i'm designing my own preamp/passive eq since i wanted something that could boost much better than my other eq's, its basically a passive inductor EQ where the inductors are lowpass filters for 3 bands, and capacitors are highpass filters for 3 bands, makeup driven by a 2520, so far its sounding really good and exactly how you describe here, you have to boost a lot to get a lot of change but even a lot of change isn't too weird

    You could place this kind of EQ either before or after the mix bus compressor; but I've seen more examples of a Pultec style being used after (eg. Fab Dupont) which of course could make its effect more pronounced.

    This acoustic bass sound superb! I would weep tears of joy to capture that sound. This video really reminds me of how I would love to see some type of video on recording upright bass. Every time I record one it's always a struggle to find the sound I'm looking for. I know what a Martin style guitar sounds like, a J45, a Taylor, I know where to start looking for the parts of the sound I want the most. I think upright bass quality is all over the map so that adds a lot of variables. Where oh where to look for that illusive heft, growl and knock?

    The layout of the pultec confuses a lot of new people. From left to right, the first downwards facing triangle of three knobs work together. Then it gets messy. The next set of three knobs are an upward facing triangle. Finally the Attenuation and Atten Selector work together.

    Great video as always. I always learn something new from this channel. When I'm searching for advise regarding audio / music production, I try to find a solution on this channel. That's why I'm also member of PLAP community.
    Regarding this video, I have some questions and hope to receive the answers:
    1. do you still use plugin EQ's on the masterbus even though you use external pultecs? If yes, can it case any issues in the chain and do you have to apply delay compensation?
    2. do you feel that there is a big difference in the final result by using the plugin of the hardware? And when would you use the plugin version in stead the hardware?
    3. have you tried other pultec brand in hardware format? I'm sure that you may have inspired some people to buy these pultec hardware. The challenge with audio scape is that it is almost impossible to buy something from them. I have tried several times in the past and also after watching this video. There products are always out of stock. Have you tried the warm audio pultecs and if yes, what is your opinion about it compared to your audioscape pultecs? At least, warm audio's products are available every time. That's why I have purchased products from them (their pultecs not yet).

    Awesome, as a hobby musician I thought I'm kind of deaf from all those plugin on/off videos that always some to be totally obvious effects or barely noticeable. But in this case I hear the difference very clearly, those pultec clones really open up the mix and make it more beautiful. Maybe there is really something with the hardware that the software still doesn't get right, or maybe it's because people use hardware less and more deliberate?

      What’s your sample size? If it’s “this video” vs “all other videos”, then it’s probably the engineer.
      If it’s “all analogue” vs “all plugins”... maybe.
      But with the right plug-in tools, you should be able to get similar results to analogue (bear in mind the settings may have to be WILDLY different to get a similar sound ... just the way the cookie crumbles)

    Off-topic: Does anyone know, how brands like Audioscape and Tube-Tech get away with "recreating" the OG Pultec design without getting sued by the patent holder? Same with the OG 1176 or LA-2A (Warm Audio, Klark Teknik, etc.).

    Am I missing something here? I always thought passive EQ's boosted frequencies by cutting others. ie: if you 'increase' high frequencies what you're doing infact is cutting low frequencies to give the impression the high ones are being boosted.

    • @nowheretoshower
      @nowheretoshower Před 3 lety +2

      This video is full of fairy dust and hippy dippy language. You are right, passive EQ's can only cut. The Pultec's are tube amp compensated so it turns up the level to compensate for the signal being cut when using the "boost" control. "This is what I do. I don't know how it works, but I like it," is terrible advise to give to mixing students. This is a sales technique - not a teaching aide. : (

    • @gerrabath
      @gerrabath Před 3 lety

      Actually a quick glance at the circuit schematic makes everything more clear.
      This can’t be just another over engineered and over sold bit of ‘boutique’ kit aimed at all the gear no idea wannabe audiophiles can it?

    • @nowheretoshower
      @nowheretoshower Před 3 lety

      @@gerrabath No, it is not audiophile gear. It is a vintage EQ meant to be used by audio engineers. The Pultec EQ's are very colored and have a very wide q. They are only capable of "broad strokes".

    huh interesting. i like what they did for everything except for the snare. the brushes on the snare sound nice and natural without the EQ, but when the EQ is engaged, the snare gets a bit harsh to my ears, they stick out a bit much, to me anyway, what do i know? but everything else, the EQ brought everything a bit more forward which is nice.

    Always love Marcs input. Some of my fave content on YT, next to Warren of course ;)
    I think it's something in the Q with (at least my) passive EQs. I mean, with a pultec inspired circuit I always thought about how you can get really playful in the low end especially with that what I like to call "push me/ pull you" effect, to borrow from Doc Doolittle with the simultaneous cut/boost. Really great. But what really surprised me with my JLM PEQ500s is what it did for snare when I strapped the pair across the drum buss. On their own, I honestly can't recall boosting snare at 12k but with the PEQ500s? There's a real sweet, fermented sauce spooned ontop and why I've maintained that these pieces are the only pieces in my 500 Series I have that I rave about , where everything else can easily be replaced with something else, no probs. There you go. My 2db
