Adam has always been criminally underrated for his guitar playing. His creativity has always been a huge part of what makes Tool special.
I was at a VIP backstage group for a T00L concert about 10yrs ago and Adam took the time to talk to us for over an hour and one thing he said that makes T00L work is 'discipline'. That always stuck with me.
The greatest single lyric ever written imo:
"Repugnant is the creature who would squander the ability to lift an eye to heaven, conscious of it's fleeting time here."
Absolute masterpiece
since he doesn't listen to lyrics, I doubt he will get much from this one, or at least not as much as everyone else does.

That's the thing about supergroups where every member is a monster; even the most overlooked member is phenomenal, integral to their sound, and one of the best to ever do it.
I think this track is a great example of Tool's ability to paint a picture and tell a story with just their sound. These guys have been together so long that only they can do what they do and without any of them in the band they would most likely disband. I agree with you about Adam. His tones, color, and rhythms he adds are so incredible and actually might be my favorite part of Tool. Tough to decide though haha

Maybe my favorite reaction by you yet of a TOOL song Thank you for noticing the Brilliance of Adam. He is never given his due because rarely does he take center stage but he the constant that put the highlight of ascent to what every one else does He is a master of his instrument
Absolutely agree with you about Adam. He has said it is all about what ever it takes for the song and not about any one member of the band.
Subtle is a nice way to put it. When you brought it up I was thinking he's like your wingman. Always present for support, never stealing the show.
Appreciated the journey so much in this song. It's one for Mrs. Heretic to unpack the lyrics. Great world building that matches the music's intensity.
Great point on Adam; I've seen people say "he can't even play fast/complex" but the restraint and placement, to be just a piece that builds the whole, is may more difficult and badass (imo) then just being loud and fast.
Tool is so committed to the song I don't think they gave us a guitar "solo" until 7empest.

At this point of their careers if any one member of the band left then the group would just no longer be Tool. And I believe that all of the members would agree and respect that, no matter what they go on to do with other musicians. They’d just call it something else. Every member of the band is completely unique and somehow they sprinkle the magic fairy dust on it and make it work brilliantly. Just an opinion. Great reaction ✌️
I know what you're saying about Adam. It's hard to compliment him without sounding like you're criticizing him. He doesn't play your "normal" solos like Kirk Hammet or something but he is so thoughtful on the sounds he creates and what he puts where that fits the song perfectly.
I'm amazed you haven't done this one already 😂. If you get chance, checkout intention, it's the album precursor to this song
Adam is a very purposeful player. He's always exactly where he needs to be.

Frankly I always thought about this song not in terms of complete mindfuck of melody that Tool can /and usually will/ employ, but as a song with message, which is not as much complicated for the message to come through.
Also "repugnant is the creature who will squander the ability to lift an eye to heaven, conscious of it's fleeting time here" reminds me of late Terry Pratchett and his great quote "I'd rather be rising ape than falling angel"

Adam is mostly playing ambience and setting mood he doesn't come to the front (except on fear inoculum where he takes the front in 2 tracks) but what he does play is super important to the composition. All the members of Tool have my favourite parts ever written on their respective instruments except Adam on guitar. Dave Gilmour has that title. Which goes to show that he's more about contributing to the over all composition rather than just his part
Not just tool but in general. I feel like all the deep lyrics tend to go over your head while you use most of your focus on the timing and the rest on the instruments and as much as I enjoy reactions to the music, certain songs (like this one) have a very deep message that is meant to be appreciated as much as the instrumentals

With most musicians, they’ll hear and analyze the instruments first (especially the instrument(s) they personally play)) and then pick up things like lyrics and the meanings of later after a few listens. I play guitar, bass, piano/keyboard, violin, trombone and always focus in on those instruments without even thinking about it. Where my friend who does vocals always listens to the lyrics first and the instruments later after a few times listening to whatever piece. Point being, we all get there in the end eventually…

Cool break down of the meters in this one. Well, for one, I'm a fan of Adam's guitar playing and he's probably my favorite member of the band in terms of his contribution, even though he also isn't the first name I think of when I think of Tool. But I do think of the guitar melodies and atmosphere he creates. Maybe a good description for his guitar playing is that it's "just right."
It’s definitely 6/4 and then 5/4 because the song is called right in two, and technically, they split the rift into six beats, and then five beats. So the music technically does the same thing as the concept of the song.

For me, the message in the song and the composition to tell the story, puts Right In Two in the top 3 TOOL songs.
Its such a grower... I think its right there with Descending and... well, I don't know if i personally enjoy any songs more.
Of course 46&2, the Pot, the Grudge, Stinkfist, Lateralus, Invincible, and many others are right up there, but this is top top tier gold plated and deep fried.

The bass is present throughout the whole song actually, doesnt just kick in at minute 2 something.. i recommend checking out a bass cover of this song by LeoBassCovers
It kicks in, but Justin is playing the main noises at the beginning and end with his bass.

There are multicultural percussion elements on other albums, particularly from Lateralus onwards. You, probably just haven't reacted to those yet. There is a lot on this album though.

It's a rough cut of a song we wrote for our second album. It didn't make the final cut however, and ended up on the cutting room floor. I asked our manager if I could use if for the channel. she said as long as I don't distribute it, and I keep the decibels low in the mix, then I can use the track for the channel. It doesn't have a finalized name, since it never made it onto the album. So I just use the temporary name we gave it, which is Papa Smurf's Revenge.
@@THEDavidHeretic Very cool... David, I think I speak for many in the fan-base when I say that we would love to know what band you play in... I gather that you're reluctant to make your channel seem like any kind of promotional vehicle for your music (and I respect that), but perhaps you could subtly throw us a bone by telling us where we might be able to check out your work (maybe by quickly mentioning it at the very end of the video or in the description or something). 🤞

@@chrisdriver7776 I don't mention any of the bands I'm currently working with, because I don't want to be accused of using this channel as an advertising platform for those bands. Having said that, people have found what bands I'm in using Google. I don't mind if people find out, and they have asked me on Instagram if that is on of the bands I work with and I have confirmed it with them privately. If you do go searching and you find one, please don't announce it in the comments sections of the videos here on CZcams.

I was counting 3 measures 3/4 and one 2/4
Alternating 6/8 and 5/6
I always count the 5/6 as 2/2 cut time. I don't know why, but it makes the change make sense. The musical feel always shift to a straighter time for the 2 off counts.

I think it's safe to say I'm a fan.
it's ironic that the members with the least amount of contribution to the music are at the band's forefront. the vast majority of the raw material is written by the guitarist and bassist.
Take any member out and they would be an inferior band. The beauty of Tool is all 4 members being as one.

If you were to sit down and listen to the entire discography you'd think to yourself "wow.. they reuse a lot of parts over and over and over." Those accented drum and bass hits are just one of the many things they do ad nauseum.
Aenima was my favorite record when it came out. But at this point I'm so tired of hearing them do the same things over and over and over.

I don't do lyrics, I've never understood them or comprehended them. So I focus all of my attention on the music itself, which I'm very good at. If you don't like what I do, or how I do it, then don't watch. Really simple.
@@THEDavidHeretic Don't get me wrong I'm a classically trained guitar and piano player, I love the harmonic and rhythm change ups as much as the next man, especially in a sea of pop drivel. I never i said i don't like what you do, I'm offering you elevation, and it was worth pointing out, for your own enjoyment. music is an art form of emotional communication, that's it's entire purpose. And when you boil it down to just 1 aspect you are missing out on the other 90% and I think that's a massive shame. Not because I think you should score the track higher or anything like that, not for the channel at all, but for your soul!!! I'd love for you to experience the whole picture.
